Intro
This morning we left Jesus and His disciples on the outskirts of Jerusalem...
This evening we bring Him into Jerusalem and to the Upper Room...
Chapter 11 - Jesus sent forth two disciples ahead to find the colt and say, “The Lord hath need of him.”
The people spread their garments as Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of the colt...
They would herald, “Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”
Jesus went into the temple and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers… They were rebuked for making the house of prayer a den of thieves
He passed by the fig tree and cursed it
Chapter 12 - Jesus spoke and taught in the temple to the Chief Priests, the scribes and the elders...
Chapter 13 - Jesus and the disciples make their first trip to the mount of olives as Jesus tells Peter, James, John and Andrew about the times
Chapter 14:3 - Jesus in Bethany had his head covered wit the ointment of spikenard from the alabaster box
Judas has an issue with this...
Now to our text:
12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? 13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15 And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. 21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
As we study the events leading up to the cross...
There are several key locations in the story...
This morning we spoke about the Journey to Jerusalem...
Tonight we focus on the Journey to the Upper Room...
On Wednesday during our annual “Cross Service” I will give you a detailed look into the entire passions week and stopping when Jesus was placed in the tomb...
But tonight I want to fast-forward some of those events and go straight to the upper room...
I want to spend most of our time in I Corinthians 11 when Paul is instructing the church at Corinth in the participation of the Lord’s Supper...
That moment in the upper room was filled with:
Love: Jesus “loved them unto the end”… He washed their feet...
Troubled and distress
Fear: while walking to the garden from the upper room Jesus would say, “Let not your heart be troubled...”
Concern: “Lord, is it I?”
But with the sweetness of the hour, Jesus instructs His disciples in a doctrinally significant moment...
1. The Institution of the Lord’s Supper

We see in verses 12-21, the participation in the Passover...
Then we see in verses 22-25, the participation in the Lord’s Supper...
Can I remind you of the difference:
a.) Passover was a picture of things to come… THIS is what it foreshadowed (Jesus’ death on the cross)
b.) In Exodus, they killed the pascal lamb (with specific requirements) and the blood of that lamb was the signfiying factor for the death angel to pass over that home… Now, Jesus is the Passover lamb (who met all requirements for the sacrifice) and His permanent shed blood never runs dry for all mankind - once it’s applied...
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Upon the death of the testator, the new testament was in force...
Now, they had kept the Passover for some 1,400 years and are now in transition as what they had been previewing for those 1,400 years is now coming to pass...
> The Jews were commanded to participate in the Passover as a means of remembrance of God freeing them from bondage in Egypt
> The Church is commanded to participate in the Lord’s Supper as a means of remembrance of what Jesus did on the cross for us
As they sat in that upper room… an intimate moment for Jesus and the Apostles...
Fellowship took place...
Friendship took place...
Followship took place...
They ate together, they washed together, they even watched as the betrayer was revealed in front of them...
Now we focus on what Jesus commanded there in that upper room for the Lord’s Supper:

And the Admonition to the Lord’s Supper:
17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
a.) Their “Unity” was False
