The Heart of a man after God’s own heart
Read Psalms 119:17-24
Go over covenants
Edenic: man was made to rule the earth
immediately after: Adamic: emnity b/w man and your seed: satan will inflict minor damage on Jesus through crucifixion, Jesus will inflict major sin to satan when he conqurs death
Noaic: God declares Noah righteous in a wicked world and wipes out the whole earth expect 1 family through which He saved - God promises He will never destroy the earth again
the world continued to be wicked
Abramic: God wants to restore His people to Himself and promises Abraham 3 things
Land (promised land)
People (his numbers will be great)
Blessing (God will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you)
Mosaic:
up to now the previous covenants have all been conditions that God has given to His people, but now we have conditions for man: the 10 commandments
Palestinian covenant
Renewal of God’s promise to Abraham - except now God promises a new heart that will come later - Deut 29 & 30
Davidic Covenant
Evidence: 1 Sam 16
background to date: Isreal had a lot of judges and they wanted to be like the other nations and have a king instead (1sam 8:6), Samuel warns them that this does not please God
The Lord gives Isreal a King anyways - he chooses a man named Saul
the point of a king is to go before them and fight their battles (1sam 8:20)
Saul started off well and received the annointing, but his unlawful sacrifice in ch13 saw the Lord seek a man after His own heart - the Lord rejects him in ch15
ch 16 vv1-2: God has rejected Saul and will send samuel to annoint the one God has chosen
ch16 vv 7: God looks at the heart
ch 16 vv 13: the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David
1 Sam 17 - David and Goliath
vv1-3: setting up the geographical landscape - both camps were on a hill and didnt want to give up the advantage so they are at a stand still
vv4-7: were are given a pretty vivid description of the appearance of Goliath
notice how this compares to the description that God have Samuel - do not look at his appearance (were given great detail of his appearance, height and stature (were given a specific height)- for God looks at the heart but man looks at the outward appearance
vv 8-11: Goliaths challenge to the isrealites
12-23: describing how David was running back and forth feeding the armies while his brothers were a part fo the ranks, he would have heard goliath’s challenge
vv24-27: what do you notice about the language of these verses
A: the focus is on the appearance of Goliath and the materials that come along with defeating him - how it will look
vv 28-30: not sure what to do with this other than another comment on David’s heart - Eliab was looked over
vv 31-33: Saul is again focused on the physical, the appearance
vv34-37: pretty confident response by David
vv38-39: the crux of the story
Saul tries to cloth David in his own armor - again reitterating appearance and possible wantign people to thnk it was him
again - the point of a king is to go and fight Isreal’s battles which is already not happening
vv40-47: David and Goliath are jawing at eachother - another re-iteration of Goliaths focus on appearance, and David’s on the spirit
48 + David defeats Goliath
Theme:
God’s prodivence will always prevail - He allowed Isreal to pick a king but picked one for himself
God establishes the line of David and not Saul
Compare and contrast with the story of bathsheba
2 Sam 11 - David and Bathsheba
Illustrate the story
David’s response to being confronted with sin:
aknowledgement (vv13) - and his sin was ‘put away’ but he still reaped the consequences of his sin
after his child died: he worshiped God
vv: 22 - shows David’s shear trust in the Lord
Theme:
God’s prodivence will always prevail - He allowed Isreal to pick a king but picked one for himself
God establishes the line of David and not Saul
3 take home points to have a heart like David
Let your actions refelct your belief on God
You need to engage in worship
Repent of your sins
