Strength in Sorrow

Scripture: Psalm 46 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: WHEN LIFE SHAKES WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS SECURE

My beloved Saint Thomas Baptist Church family and friends, Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today, I stand not only as a preacher…But as a son. And that changes how this moment feels.

Because today, we are not just gathering to officiate a service, we are gathering to honor a life.

A life that made an impact…A life that carried presence…A life that carried strength and elegance.

We come today remembering our mother, Jennifer Downey… known to many as Geneva.

And if you knew her…You already know, she was a woman of strength.

A woman of grace. A woman who carried herself with dignity.

And can I say it the way she lived it?

She was a trendsetter. Oh yes, she was…She didn’t just get dressed…She made a statement.

Wherever she went, she was the best dressed in the room.

Not just because of what she wore. But because of how she wore it.

There was a confidence about her…An elegance about her…A presence about her…

And today, while our hearts are heavy…We thank God for a life that left its mark.

But church, if we’re honest…Even the strongest among us feel sorrow.

Even those who carried themselves well…Even those who walked with dignity…

Leave behind hearts that are hurting. Because grief has a way of shaking you. And that’s why Psalm 46 speaks to us today: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Because today… trouble is here.

Sorrow is here.

Grief is here.

But so is God.

BIG IDEA: Even in our deepest sorrow, God remains our refuge, our strength, and our steady help. And so, with the help of the Holy Spirit and the real preacher, Jesus Christ, I would like to submit three truths from this text to help us carry both our grief… and our gratitude.

GOD IS OUR REFUGE WHEN LIFE FEELS UNSTABLE

Psalm 46:2 says: “Therefore will not we fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains be shaken and slip into the hearts of the seas.”

And today… it feels like something has shifted.

Because when a mother leaves…When a pillar in your life is no longer physically present…

It can feel like the ground beneath you has moved. There are memories everywhere…

Her voice echoes in your heart…Her presence is missed in ways words cannot explain.

And for me, this isn’t just scripture… this is real.

Because the woman who helped shape me…The woman whose strength I witnessed…

The woman whose elegance I admired…Is no longer here in the way she once was.

But the psalmist reminds us, even when life shifts…God does not.

And here is the comfort today: The same strength she carried…The same grace she modeled…

The same dignity she walked in…That didn’t come from nowhere. That was God at work in her.

And the God who sustained her…Is the same God who will sustain us.

(Isaiah 41:10) “Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with you with My righteous right [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].

So, when your heart feels overwhelmed…Run to Him. Because He is still our refuge.

GOD IS OUR STRENGTH WHEN OUR HEART IS HEAVY

Psalm 46:4–5 says: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved.”

And when I read that…I can’t help but think about my mother. Because she carried a strength about her.

Not loud…Not forced…But steady.

There are some people who don’t have to say much. Their presence speaks for them.

And that was Geneva.

She walked into rooms with quiet confidence…She carried herself with elegance…She set a standard without even trying.

But here’s what I know: That kind of strength is not just external. It’s spiritual.

And today, while our hearts are heavy…We thank God for the strength He gave her…And the strength He will now give us.

Because grief will weigh on you. There will be moments when it feels like too much.

Moments when memories hit unexpectedly. Moments when you wish you had just one more conversation.

But hear me today: God will be your strength. (2 Corinthians 12:9) “but He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough always available regardless of the situation]; for [my] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.” Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me.”

The same God who carried her through life. Will carry you through this loss.

GOD IS OUR HELP RIGHT NOW

Psalm 46:1 says: “God is our refuge and strength [mighty and impenetrable], A very present and well proved help in trouble.”

And I love that word present. Because while we are missing her presence…We are not without His presence.

God is here. He is here in every tear. He is here in every memory. He is here in every silent moment.

(Psalm 34:18) “The Lord is near to the heartbroken and He saves those with a crushed in spirit (contrite in heart, truly sorry for their sin).

And I believe this with everything in me: The legacy she left behind…Is not just in what she wore.

It’s in what she passed on. Her strength. Her style. Her standard. Her spirit. And that lives on.

In her children…In her family…In everyone who was touched by her life.

So yes, we grieve. But we do not grieve without hope. Because God is helping us right now.

CELEBRATORY WHOOPING CLOSE

And I feel something shifting even now…Because when I think about her life…I don’t just see sorrow.

I see strength!

I see elegance!

I see dignity!

I see a woman who made her mark!

And I hear the Word of God saying: “God is our refuge and strength!”

Which means…When the tears fall. He’s strength!

When the nights feel long. He’s strength!

When the heart feels heavy. He’s strength!

And I don’t know who needs to hear this. But the same God who walked with her…IS WALKING WITH YOU!

He kept her!

He sustained her!

He carried her!

And He will do the same for you!

And one of these old days…We won’t have to cry no more…

We won’t have to say goodbye no more… Because the Bible says… “He shall wipe away all tears from their eyes!”

But until that day…We stand on His Word!

We lean on His strength!

We trust in His presence!

Because in our sorrow…THERE IS STILL STRENGTH!

Can somebody say yes!
