Let Me Clear My Throat
Scripture: John 19:28 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION: WHEN HE SPEAKS AGAIN
My brothers and sisters I greet you tonight in the wonderful, mighty, and magnanomous name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
We have journeyed to Calvary. We have listened carefully as Jesus has spoken from the cross.
Words of forgiveness…Words of assurance…Words of compassion…Words of abandonment…
And now we arrive at the fifth word.
John 19:28 says: “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.”
This is not just a statement of physical need.
This is not just a cry from a suffering Savior.
This is a divine declaration wrapped in human weakness.
And if I could put a title on this fifth word, it would simply be: “Let Me Clear My Throat.”
Because before Jesus says, “It is finished!” Before He releases His spirit…He pauses…He thirsts…He clears His throat.
And I came to tell somebody; Even in His suffering, Jesus is preparing to speak something final, something powerful, something victorious!
THE BIG IDEA: Sometimes God allows a moment of discomfort not to defeat you, but to prepare you for a greater declaration.
So, with the help of the Holy Spirit and the real preacher Jesus Christ, I would like to submit three things this thirst teaches us.
HIS THIRST REVEALS HIS HUMANITY
Jesus says, “I thirst.”
This is the same Jesus who turned water into wine (John 2:1–11).
The same Jesus who told the woman at the well, “I will give you living water” (John 4:14).
The same Jesus who cried, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink” (John 7:37).
And now… the Water-Giver is thirsty.
Why? Because He is fully God—but also fully man.
(Hebrews 4:15) reminds us that He was “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.”
Which means.
He knows what it feels like to be tired.
He knows what it feels like to hurt.
He knows what it feels like to be empty.
And can I encourage somebody tonight. Whatever you’re going through, Jesus understands!
You’re not praying to a distant Savior. You’re praying to a Savior who has felt what you feel!
HIS THIRST FULFILLS THE SCRIPTURES
The text says, “that the scripture might be fulfilled, “This moment was not accidental it was prophetic.
Psalm 69:21 declared: “They (self-righteous hypocrites) also gave me gall [poisonous and bitter] for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”
Everything happening on that cross was intentional. Every pain… every moment… every drop of blood…Jesus was not just dying. He was fulfilling divine purpose!
And here’s the blessing. If God was intentional about Calvary,
He is intentional about your life!
Isaiah 55:11 says So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
That means; What God spoke over your life…What God promised concerning your future…Will come to pass!
Even when it looks painful!
Even when it feels dry!
God is still fulfilling His Word!
HIS THIRST PREPARES THE FINAL DECLARATION
Now don’t miss this…Jesus says, “I thirst,”
Then they lift the vinegar to His lips…And right after that…He declares, “It is finished!” (John 19:30)
In other words, the thirst was not the end it was preparation.
Can I say it like this? He had to clear His throat before He could finish His assignment.
That moment of thirst…
That uncomfortable pause…
Was getting Him ready to release a victorious word!
And somebody here needs to hear this…What feels like a dry season…What feels like a painful pause…Is just God clearing your throat!
Because there is a word in you.
A testimony in you!
A victory in you!
And before it comes out, God will sometimes let you feel the pressure of the moment!
But don’t you give up in the thirst.
Because the next thing coming out of your mouth…Is going to be powerful!
CLOSING — CLEAR YOUR THROAT
My brothers and sisters…Jesus said, “I thirst.” Not because He was defeated! But because He was preparing. Preparing to finish. Preparing to complete the assignment. Preparing to declare victory.
And I came to tell somebody tonight…You’ve been in a dry place…You’ve been in a hard place…You’ve been in a thirsty season…But don’t you misunderstand your moment!
God is not done with you yet! He’s just clearing your throat!
Because there’s a “finished” coming! There’s a breakthrough coming! There’s a victory coming!
And when you open your mouth again, You won’t cry…You won’t complain…
But you’ll declare “Let Me Clear My Throat”
CELEBRATORY CLOSE:
He hung His head…For me and you…He got thirsty…
So, I could be filled…And before He closed His eyes…
Before He gave up the ghost…He cleared His throat…
And when He spoke again…Hell got nervous…
The grave got scared…And the devil got defeated!
Somebody ought to shout…He cleared His throat!
Which means it’s not over…Which means it’s not done…Which means your story ain’t finished yet!
Open your mouth and say, “Lord, whatever You’re doing…Prepare me to speak victory!”
Can I get a witness?
Say YES!
