Holy Saturday (2026)

Matthew 27:57-66

Today, on the Feast of Holy Saturday we meditate upon the Holy Silence of our Lord’s noiseless flesh in the silent tomb

Silence . The silence of God.

Now, I am sure, and i dont think this is a crazy wager to make on polymarket but . - im pretty sure you deal too wiht the silence of God.

what do we make of that silence? When God is, we say, no where to be found. No where to be heard.

What was He really doing? - take the texts of today to hear if thats your question. - when we don’t see Him, - and think He is dead and God there He is working the greatest works that will make the loudest sounds. - in the silence He works.

In the buried tomb which made now sound there He emptied hell of His saints and broguht them in His glorious train up to the heavenly places. - There He dsid this. WHen nobody heard it. And nobody saw it. And nobody beleived it. Athere it was happening, there it was occuring, taking place, manifesting. in the silence.

Friends, silence is powerful. - but becuase ti gives you time to think, - or , time to reflect or, becuase theres somerhtign valuable to hear in hearing nothing,. but it’s powerful becuase even Whhen God’s Works make no sound, - we know that He neither slumber nor sleeps.

He is at work, - even when we dont hear Him. We say, - but God where are you? He is with oyu.

but GOd i dont feel you , - He is wihtin you.

BUt GOd how can there be a way out of this? - Just trust HIm.

Freinds just trust Him.

The silence of the sealed tomb does not speak of tomorrow like we thikn it does. It speaks only of the context that God will save us from. Indeed - even the method thorguh which God will save us through.

Take for example if youwill the cross itself, the tale of yesterday

Take for yourself again the more moddern context that so many of us deal with of unbeleiving family

we liuke to say, these people could never be saved, these people have no hope so on and so forth. Why? Bcuase of what we see. becuase it seems hopeless, becuae God seems to not hear our prayewrs becuase we see the historic trajectory in the lives of these unebleiving persons andn we say, - well, if they havent changed yet they never will. Why do we say that? Berucae, people will say, - nobody changes, not really. Things are predictable. If osmeone hasnt done somehting and have a history of not doing them then they never will. Is that so? Do we know that death normally brings life to all men? That corpses can rise from the dead? does that fit the trajectory of what you’re used to? NO. And so, like Holy Saturday people, - we sit hidsden in our locked rooms and for fear of everyhtign and say, - this is it. this is how it is.This is what it is. This i what it will awlays be. And we will never see any change, never any difference, never anyhitng new. Death comes once and satyays forever. a hope which is not given will never arive.

- BUt what else does HOly Saturdy tell us about that? - that even so, EVEN STILL, EVEN WHEN (beleiving that, thinking rhat, siyng that) GOD ACTS IN DIRECT CONTRADICTION TO OUR EXPECTAITON. and the ting hwihc should not and does not happen - DOES HAPPEN. When the barren have fruitful wombs (Hannah, Elizabeth, Sarah,)

Take for yourself again the modern cojntext that so many churhces today feel. We are running out of money, the people are dying, how can there be any hope? Well. WHat a stupid quesiton. - today does not foretell tomorrow. it is true we have as much monty to day and as many people today as we do today but that does mean so tomrorow. we like to trerack and trace everyhting and order it according to ttrajectory bnut we do not take into account qwhat God will do when we are not looking. and so we say, 4 years ago you were not here. 5 years ago i was not here. today, - we dont know who will join us next year. - but we do know one thing, - that we trust God. Regardless of what we see.
