God’s word: (15-18 Min) What happens in Jonah 1?

Point 1: People run from God. 1:1-6

The first thing that happens is Jonah fled when God called him to go. 1:1-6

Don’t leave out vs 4. GOD sent the storm. The mariners also knew that other ships have been destroyed by these storms. I actually saw something the other day that said still to this day, storms will come through right there, making the sea go nuts!

vs 5 tells us that they were not following God. They prayed to their false gods.

They hurled cargo overboard to lighten the load.

Jonah was down in the inner part of the ship. ASLEEP!

vs The Captain woke Jonah up to cry out to his God, because theirs wasn't working out for them. (At this point, they didn’t know it was Jonah’s fault)

Transition:

Point 2 vs 7-12 Our plans do not work.

We can’t see what God's plans are.

Jonah knew his fate was death in the sea. He realized it was at that moment… he jacked up!

The sea was roaring… and going nuts! The storms were raging. What do we do? They tried not to kill him, but they got to a point where a decision had to be made.

vs 7 They made bets on who had caused this. Somehow, they pointed toward Jonah.

vs 8 So they interrogated him to see who he was and why this was happening.

vs 9-10 He tells them he is a Hebrew and follows the one true God. Then the men knew he was fleeing the one true God after Jonah told them. They were scared to death.

vs 11-12 Sea was getting crazier… Jonah is ready to deal with his fate… throw me over. The men tried not to…

We can try in every way we can to run from God. We can make plans. We run. God does not put up with it. His plans are better.

Transition:

Point 3 vs 13-16 God had a plan for Jonah. God’s plan is better.

Gods plan is better even when it seems like we have been dealt the low blow.

God’s plan is better even when it is completely different than our own.

Vs 15-16 show us that God also had plans for the people on the boat to trust Him like never before.

They thought the plan was to hurl him into the sea. Pleaded with God to move, and save them. Then they did hurl into the sea… and they were saved. They then feared and trembled before the Lord.

vs 17 God’s plan. Jonah was swallowed by the great fish!

Still don’t know God’s plan exactly, but it wasn’t everyone else’s. Including Jonah. He was willing to deal with God’s punishment, but God had other plans.
