Atonement - The Hebrew term frequently translated “atone” has the basic meaning “to wipe out,” “to erase,” “to cover,” or perhaps more generally “to remove.

7 He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 8 Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord’s lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. 10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

15 “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. 16 So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
The Mercy Seat was the top (Cover) of the Ark of the Covenant. It represented God’s Throne on Earth. His presence resided there.
One Goat was killed and its blood was sprinkled over the Mercy Seat.

The other goat was prayed over and the peoples sins was placed on it and was casted out into the wilderness removing the sin
21 Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man. 22 The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

One pays for the Sin and the other removes the Sin
I can remove myself out of sin but I still owe a price for sin. death

J - Pilate - wanted to release Jesus. But the Jews cried out “ whoever makes himself king speaks against Caesar”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
Jesus was Led to Golgatha
Golgotha - gowl·guh·thuh. Place of the Skull - in Aramaic Golgotha, in Latin -Calvaria where we get Calvary
They spat on Him, mocked Him, struck him on his head
Romans were good and torture. they controlled through fear.
Scourged : A scourge is a whip or lash, especially a multi-thong type, used to inflict severe punishment

34 they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
Wine and gall was mixed to help mitigate the pain.
41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, 42 “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. 43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
they made fun of Jesus, and his deity. But Jesus had to continue with the plan to save humanity. This is the equivalent to someone making fun of the person trying to save them as they are burning in a house fire.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
The Debt was Paid!
So big we couldn’t pay it.
Someone free of sin had to pay it
How can I pay a debt when I don’t have anything worth giving
Jesus paid the debt with his perfect sinless life.
Jesus’s life was enough to save all of humanity.
