Intro:

Main Point: The birth of the Church, initiated by the Holy Spirit descending on Pentecost to empower believers for global gospel proclamation.
Characteristics of the Passage: radical change in a legal, emotional, and spiritual way. The same people who nailed Jesus on the cross are now selling their properties and belongings to help their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Section 1: Pentecost

Main Point 1-4: God fulfills His promise by giving them the gift that is the Holy Spirit. Ref. Verses: Isaiah 64:6 - “All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.” John 15:5 - “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.”
Main Point 5-13: The Holy Spirit gives them the ability to speak in languages that were not taught to them which allowed everyone to understand each other.

Section 2: Peter’s Sermon

Main Point 14-36: Peter shines light to the people’s sin and shows how Jesus is the Messiah. Ref. Verses: Romans 3:23 - “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;” 2 Corinthians 5:21 - “He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Application Point: We are sinners in need of a savior, thankfully we have one.

Section 3: Call to Repentance

Main Point 37-40: With their sin brought into light, Peter shares the good good Gospel. Ref. Verses: Ecclesiastes 12:14 - “For God will bring every act to judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil.” Ezekiel 18:32 - “For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. “So repent and live!” Application Point: Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins. Hate sin, love God.

Section 4: A Generous and Growing Church

Main Point 41-47: The church is now created and birthed into the corrupt world, an Eden in the desert. Ref. Verses: 2 Corinthians 5:17 - “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” Philippians 2:15 - “so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world,” Application Point: Be an Eden.
