Psalm 67 (LSB)
1 God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us— Selah. 2 That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge the peoples with uprightness And lead the nations on the earth. Selah. 5 Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 6 The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses us. 7 God blesses us, That all the ends of the earth may fear Him.
Matthew 21:1–11 LSB
1 And when they had approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. 3 “And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4 And this took place in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 5 Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your King is coming to you, Lowly, and mounted on a donkey, And on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.’” 6 And the disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their garments on them; and He sat on the garments. 8 And most of the crowd spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. 9 And the crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were crying out, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Introduction:
Romans 1 - Condemnation: All people suppress the truth of the Gospel and are under the wrath of God
Romans 2-5 - Justification: God imputes the righteousness of Jesus and declares righteous those who receive this righteousness by faith
Romans 6-8 - Sanctification: The Spirit of God takes us from salvation to glorification and produces within us the fruit of Christlikeness
Romans 9-11 - Evangelization: Those who have been delivered from the wrath of God and have been declared righteous through faith in Christ are to spread the Gospel throughout the entire world to all peoples and nations
On Palm Sunday we see principles for sharing our faith that remind us:
Gospel transformed hearts will always be hearts that desire the salvation of others
(1) On Palm Sunday we see Sovereignty, Obedience, and Fickle Worship
Sovereignty
Matthew 21:2–3 LSB
2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. 3 “And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
Obedience
The fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 - Jesus actively fulfilling prophecy
Matthew 21:6 LSB
6 And the disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,
The obedience of the disciples - Jesus said go in verse 2 and they went - did it make sense?
Feigned worship
Garments and palm branches, shouting Hosanna
But in a few days the crowd would yell crucify him
We see the perfect obedience of Jesus, we see the obedience of the two disciples, and we see the fickle worship
The crowd wanted a conquering warrior. The disciples obeyed a gentle leader
What is your obedience based upon? When Christ says Go, do you obey by faith or by expectation?
Five areas of obedience
Our obedience partners with God’s sovereignty. God may be sovereign but we must be obedient.
One is prayer, that we pray for the salvation of those who are without Christ and God is pleased to work through our prayers.
Second is preaching, the preaching of the Word of God. God has ordained the public proclamation of the Word of God for the reaching of the lost.
Third is personal witnessing, that you and I would fill the streets of our city with our own testimony of telling others about Jesus Christ. If God wanted, God could have written the gospel in the sky, and we just sit back and twiddle our thumbs. God could have sent a band of angels like He did in Luke 2 to announce the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, but He hasn’t done that. God has chosen to use weak, fallible people like you and me to spread the eternal message of the gospel. Fourth is godly living. We must back up our witnessing by modeling the message and by living in a manner that is consistent with the gospel that we preach. So, we can’t preach one thing and live another way.
Fifth would be to love the lost and to reach out to the lost and show kindness to lost people, not slamming doors in their face but inviting them to come through our door and to sit down with us and to be able to share the love of Christ with them. It has been well said, “People don’t care how much you know till they know much you care.” And there is an element of truth in that.
(2) Our desire to share Christ must be grounded in the promises of God and the perfect righteousness of Jesus
Romans 10:1–2 LSB
1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
Genuine desire, misplaced zeal
Romans Zeal according to Knowledge

They had a zeal for God, but their zeal was based on ignorance. A fanatic is somebody who loses sight of where he is going but redoubles his effort to get there. He is full of zeal, but he has no knowledge or understanding of that for which he is zealous.

Romans 10:3–4 LSB
3 For not knowing about the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
The righteousness of God and the false worship of disbelief
It is the righteousness of God that is given to us through the perfect righteousness of Christ
You cannot make yourself righteous. False worship will lead you to the condemnation of Romans 1, worshiping the created and not the Creator.
True worship leads to come humbly before Christ and receive His righteousness
The Law reveals sin, it does not remove sin - but to receive the righteousness of Christ you must believe - and this is what we preach
God is sovereign, God has given us His precious promises in the Bible
We must be obedient, and we preach a salvation that is given through believing in Jesus
Gospel transformed hearts will always be hearts that desire the salvation of others
The goodness and generosity of God our Savior, the renewing power of the Holy Spirit, and the certain hope purchased by Jesus Christ settle over your living, your thinking, your worship, and your dying. Amen.
