Luke 19:28-44
Luke 19:28-44
Luke 19:28–44 “And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat.
Untie it and bring it here.
He didn’t say it because He was tired, but for a prophetic reason...for a purpose.
Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
I war horse was something a king did when they rode into town as a conqueror of a physical people, an earthly kingdom. A foal was ridden to signify peace. Jesus is signifying the nature of the Kingdom…peace. At many times God used war in the Old Testament for normal men to gain peace. Jesus is not a normal man and would not do thing in the normal way.
Formerly He had refrained from outright calling himself King but would now demonstrate Himself to be, an act greater than words.
God’s kingdom doesn’t not resemble earthly Kingdoms. The multitudes of the poor, a foal of a donkey, bareback. Men of wealth and earthly power would gain nothing from this spectacle of humility.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ”
So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them,
“Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
So God knew the foal would be in a specific place, the owner would be present, without the man’s knowing the disciples or the conditions complies. A foal in those days was worth about several months wages.
The Disciples render to the Lord the obedience which he demands; they believe he will remove obstacles, and open up a path, and will not permit their endeavors to be unavailing. They didn’t ask for several months wages they just went.
And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
2 Kings 9:13 “Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.””
a clear declaration of allegiance and a public submission to Jesus' kingship. The cloak an outer garment of the more expensive and important . In this time clothes were some of peoples most valuable possessions…and they laid them under the dusty feet of a donkey (sacrifical),
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying,
Zechariah 14:4 “On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.”
The Messiah will come to the Mount of Olives. Luke is communicating many things in the details he has chosen to include
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Luke 2:13–14 “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!””
Psalm 118:25–26 “Save us, we pray (Hoshiana), O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.”
The other gospels say Hosanna. Hoshiana
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Even the pharisees knew at this point the spectacle clearly indicates the people inauguration of Christ as Messiah and King. Though, the stones signify that even if the people did not shout it doesn’t change the fact that Christ is the Messiah and King. The triumphal entry would have been a spectacle regardless, but God bends the hearts of men and beasts to declare His glory.
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.””
In 70 AD the Romans destroyed the temple and the city of Jerusalem. They killed approximately 1.1 million people. The city of Austin has 1.05 million people. almost 100k were enslaved to work in Egyptian mines.
