Today, on Kids Bible Minute, we are going to be talking about another topic related to the our current series on being a “Defender of the Faith.” That topic or that subject we are going to be considering and studying about today, is Euthanasia. As Christians we must be willing to stand against euthanasia, but what exactly is that and what is it dealing with?
Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines it as, “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (such as a persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.”
Britannica Encyclopedia writes, “act or practice of painlessly putting to death persons suffering from painful and incurable disease or incapacitating physical disorder or allowing them to die by withholding treatment or withdrawing artificial life-support measures.”
Now before we dive into the immorality aspects of euthanasia, let me first point out what is not morally wrong, even though it technically fits the definition. Euthanasia is not morally wrong when one simply allows another who is being artificially kept alive by machines to to pass when there is zero to little chance the person will ever be able to live without it again. In such cases a loved one can agree to have the machines stopped, which will allow the natural reality of death to take place. Again, this is assuming that there is no hope of life without the artificial life-support keeping them alive.
Unfortunately, humans take what is often morally ok, and turn it into something that becomes immoral. In the case of euthanasia, we find people advocating that doctors and others should be allowed to assist in someone’s desire to commit suicide. This is by either, giving the person who is wishing to commit suicide what they need to achieve suicide or by being the one that actually takes the life of the one desiring to end their life.
Now, like when we talked about abortion, God deems the life he has given someone, as precious and not be ended artificially. That is why God calls the taking of innocent life murder, because he abhors and hates those that take innocent life.
Proverbs 6:16–17 NKJV
16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood
Now, if a person commits suicide they are not free from the charge of taking innocent life, in fact this would be consider by God self murder. Why, because that life does not belong to the person that is using it, it is God’s that was given to us, and will be given back to God when die here on earth.
Job 33:4 NKJV
4 The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
The word for “breath” here is the same for “spirit.” The word “spirit,” as it pertains to humans, often is referring to the third aspect of humanity. All humans have body, soul, and spirit or life when they are conceived.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When we die and our life leaves this body, the soul goes on to its eternity, but our spirit or life goes back to God, whom it belongs to.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 NKJV
7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
Because all human life belongs to God and because all human life is precious to God, when someone takes their own life or if someone takes another person’s life, and it is not for punishment’s sake, i.e., the murder of someone else (Genesis 9:6), then that is murder.
And the bible is clear, murder is sin, and unrepentant sin always leads to eternal damnation.
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, [fornicators], sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
