📖 Text: 1 Kings 18:1–40

Background

We are 3 years into a drought.
No rain
No crops
People are desperate
And the reason?
👉 Israel has turned from God to false gods—specifically Baal
Who?
So God has been showing:
👉 “I am the one who provides.”
Now it all comes to a head.
God tells Elijah:
📖 “Go present yourself to Ahab…”
have you ever been stuck in the middle of something?
its easy at the beginning, but at some point you have to pick a side.
Transition
“That’s exactly where Israel is…”
👉 Not fully following God 👉 Not fully following Baal
👉 Just stuck in between.
READ THE KEY MOMENT
📖 1 Kings 18:21
“How long will you waver between two opinions?”

Point 1 — You Can’t Stay in the Middle Forever

Pause.
This is the question of the whole passage.
👉 “How long will you waver?”
Explain It
Elijah is saying:
👉 “Make a decision.”
⚖️ 1. They Practiced “Both-And” Worship
Israel didn’t fully reject God—they still:
Knew His name (Yahweh)
Kept some traditions and history
Claimed to be His people
But at the same time, they also:
Prayed to Baal for rain
Followed Baal’s practices
Trusted Baal for provision
👉 So instead of choosing, they tried to cover all their bases.
It’s like saying:
“I trust God… but just in case, I’ll trust something else too.”
If God is real → follow Him
If Baal is real → follow him
👉 But stop playing both sides
Teaching Moment
This is not just their question…
👉 This is your question.
Discussion Question
Why do we try to follow God but still hold onto other things?
Why do we try to play both sides?
We do the things to fit in that are most of the time not Godly because the world is not Godly, but we also go to church and youth group so we can say we are a good christian.
You have to Choose one or the other like Elijah is saying here, there is no inbetween.
The Israelites were struggling on who to follow, so Elijah made it easier for them.

Point 2 — False Gods Demand Everything but Give Nothing

Set Up the Contest
450 prophets of Baal
1 Elijah
Two altars
No fire
👉 The God who answers is the true God.
📖 Read 1 Kings 18:26–29

What did they do to get baal’s attention?

Look at the lengths they went to:
Shouting
Dancing
Cutting themselves
they did this for about 8 hours
👉 Trying everything to get Baal’s attention
Teaching Moment
False gods (idols):
👉 Will drain you 👉 Hurt you 👉 Exhaust you
👉 And still not answer you

What are some “idols” today that people give everything to but never satisfy?

TV
Games
popularity
At the end of the day, do these things give you hapiness
peace
do they help you sleep at night
only God can do these things, only God can satisfy us.
God is much easier to follow to. He makes it simple. but the world doesnt, look at what the prophets of Baal did.
Transition
They did:
👉 Everything they could think of
And still…
👉 Nothing happened

Point 3 — God Doesn’t Need Your Performance

Now Elijah steps up.
Read 1 Kings 18:30–35
Highlight the Water
Elijah:
Builds the altar
Places the sacrifice
Then:
👉 Dumps water on it 👉 Again 👉 Again
Until it fills a trench
soaks everything
Explain Why This Matters
Fire and water don’t mix
He’s making it harder
👉 Showing this is 100% God
God allows things to look impossible so that when He moves:
👉 There’s no confusion about who did it.
Teaching Moment
God doesn’t need perfect conditions.
he doesnt need us to parade around for hours.
👉 He just needs real faith.
Contrast
They:
they sang, and then sang louder they performed,a dn then performed harder they cut themselves, and then more
Elijah:
👉 Simply obeyed 👉 Simply prayed
“They shouted all day to a god who couldn’t hear them… Elijah whispered to a God who was already listening.”
📖 Read 1 Kings 18:36–37

Point 4 — The Real Purpose: Turning Hearts Back

This is huge.
📖 v.37 “So that this people will know… you are God… and you have turned their hearts back.”
Teaching Moment
This wasn’t about:
👉 Elijah proving himself
This was about:
👉 God bringing people back
Why does God always want us to come back?
God wants us to come to him, he misses us when we leave
Connection to Easter (Start Building It)
👉 This is what God has always been doing:
Turning hearts back to Him.
finish this thought

Point 5 — Our God Is Completely Consuming

📖 Read 1 Kings 18:38
The fire falls.
And it doesn’t just burn the sacrifice.
👉 It consumes:
The offering
The wood
The stones
The dust
The water
Everything.

God Desires All, Not Just Part of Us

This is where it really hits personally.
Just like the fire consumed the entire altar…
👉 God doesn’t want:
Just your Sunday
Just part of your attention
Just some obedience
He wants all of you.
Discussion Question
What areas of your life that we can give more to God?

Point 6 — Removing What Pulls You Away

📖 1 Kings 18:39–40
They declare:
👉 “The Lord, He is God!”
Then Elijah removes the false prophets.
Explain Carefully
This shows:
👉 When you choose God…
👉 You don’t keep what was pulling you away
Application
For us:
👉 It means removing:
Sin
Distractions
Idols
Anything that competes with God
what are some things that compete with God in our lives?
Illustration
“You don’t keep something that’s destroying you…”
👉 You remove it
Question for them to think on
What is something in your life that might be pulling you away from God?
BIG IDEA

God alone is the true God—and He deserves your full commitment.

🔥 EASTER CONNECTION + FINAL LANDING
Now slow way down. This is where everything comes together.
Bridge It Clearly
“On Mount Carmel…”
👉 Fire came down from heaven 👉 And proved who the true God was
“But on Easter…”
👉 Something even greater happened
Bring in the Resurrection
“Jesus didn’t just call down fire…”
👉 He went to the cross 👉 He died 👉 And three days later…
👉 He rose again
Make the Connection
On Mount Carmel:
👉 Fire proved God’s power
On Easter:
👉 The empty tomb proved it forever
Tie It Back to the Question
Elijah asked:
👉 “How long will you waver between two opinions?”
Now say:
👉 “How long will you stay in between?”
Contrast Like You Did Earlier
The prophets of Baal:
👉 Tried everything 👉 Got nothing
Jesus:
👉 Did everything 👉 And offers you life
FINAL BUILD
“You don’t have to wonder who the true God is…”
👉 The cross shows it 👉 The resurrection proves it
🔥 FINAL LINES (STRONG LANDING)
👉 “Fire fell on Mount Carmel…”
Pause.
👉 “But the stone rolled away on Easter morning.”
👉 “And that leaves you with the same question…”
Pause.
👉 “Are you all in… or still in between?”
