Intro

Its Good Friday
Multiple feelings and thoughts through this week and today through Sunday
joy of grasping what exactly was accomplished on the cross, will get there
sorrow of knowing this was Gods loving plan because of my sin
time for confession, mourning, repentance, thankfulness, and joy
Devotionals this week led through events
Themes
Monday- Christ calling out the exploitation of people in the temple
Tuesday- challenged by Jewish leaders and prepared hearts of disciples
Wednesday- quiet
Thursday- again more preparation for Jesus and disciples, Passover (Lords supper) then the time is at hand
Friday- today
Friday morning saw the start of trials and questioning for Jesus before the Jewish leaders, then before Pilate, then before Herod, then back to Pilate. Abused all along the way.
The governors finding no fault in him put him before the people who choose Barabbas, sentencing Jesus to the cross
But before we get there, lets step back
Go back to Thursday evening, the Last Supper
Luke 22:14–20 ESV
And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”
this was a Passover meal, typically includes 4 cups that represent the promises seen in Ex 6.
Gospels record either 1 or two cups, scholars believe it was likely there were 4
sanctification “I will bring you out”
Judgement “I will deliver you”
Redemption “I will redeem you”
Praise “I will take you to me”
It is also believed that the cup “after they ate” was the 3rd cup and that he left off the 4th cup
So Jesus says “this cup”, the redemption cup, represents the new covenant “in my blood”
Focus on the idea of redemption, the word redeemed
The Greek root word is “to loose”, to break the bonds of or to free
Throughout the OT in order to be redeemed either price was paid or substitution made
a ransom if you will
Matthew 20:28 ESV
even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Christ mentions that the new covenant is “in his blood”
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
His death on the cross was redemptive and substitutionary, and voluntary
God has initiated redemption for his people throughout history and and we are remembering the days when he initiated by willingly going to the cross for our sins.
So what was accomplished on the cross?
I was redeemed
Christ bore my sins as a substitution, and “loosed” the chains of captivity and bondage to sin
This is not rescue, it is redemption
I am redeemed
