1. Read Matthew 26:36-39, 42 (Three Times)
2. Importance Of The Moment: -Leading up to the most important event of all time. It split time BC and AD
3. Lead up: Jesus is deeply afflicted he knows what he is about to go through on the cross. Leads up to this moment- The plot to kill Jesus was made (Outside affliction), Judas Betrayal (friend affliction), and he predicted Peter was going to deny him (Close friend affliction) Jesus Emotion: “Sorrowful and troubled” “Soul Sorrowful even until death” Question to Ponder: I want us to ponder on is does your current situation exceed your purpose? (Dont let them asnwer this yet, just ponder)
4. Jesus Response:
- Jesus fully feels the moment in front of the disciples. He doesnt hide it
-Jesus actually draws closer to the people around him
– Tells Peter, james and john to come with him.
- To go a step further Jesus even drew closer to Peter who he knew would deny him
- Jesus Draws closer to the people around him, and even someone who would directly afflict him Question to ponder: When you face affliction do you draw near or do you create distance
5. Jesus Response: Part 2
- Jesus in his affliction draw closer to the physical which is the people around him but he also drew near to God in prayer. This was Jesus first reaction.
- Why this is important: Because Jesus in this moment went to talk to whom was going to put him through this physical, mental and emotional pain.
- Pain: Rejection, Public humiliation, Brutal beating
- Jesus is asking: Why do I have to go through this. I was cool doing miracles, spreading your Word. I was cool teaching and preaching and helping all these people but you want me to go through this
- But this is who Jesus drew near to asking why do I have to go through this?
- This was apart of Jesus purpose: The good and the bad but he had to go through this
- Relates back to us: You know and understand who God made you but you may also ask why did I have to go through this? The family I was born into, the places i was called to lead and serve, my Job, where I live. But this is my purpose Question to ponder: Have you ever asked God why regarding the purpose he has for your life
6. The Cup:
- The cup is brought up V 39 and V 42.
- The cup symbolizes our sin and the price that he was going to have to pay. The Key of the cup is that he was and is the only person that could face the cup. No one else is able to die for the sins of humanity
- We see two responses from Jesus when it comes to facing this cup. In 39 he says if possible allow this cup to pass and in 42 he says if it is in your will I will face this cup
- Relate it back to us: What cup in your life have you wanted to pass along and not face Back to Questions:
- Jesus knew his situation, but was under his current situation: Does your current situation ever make you question your purpose?
- Jesus drew closer in his current situation: When life gets hard do you draw near or do you pull away?
- Jesus reasoning with God: Have you ever asked God, why this path?
- Jesus faced the cup: What part of your life feels like a cup you do not want to drink?
7. Closing: Matthew 16:24 – Picking up your cross and dying daily - Jesus is telling us that we will go through our own suffering - And that we are going to have to die to ourselves and whoever will lose his life will find life
