As we head into Good Friday
We know what happens on Friday and I have often wonder why they call it Good because physically nothing good happens
And yet spiritually and eternally the best thing in the world happens
And yet church as we will see tomorrow we should have known
Because we know what happens
We know that all be it very physically hard to hear and bear we know that it had to happen
Last night Jesus was arrested and went through some mockery of trials
They found Him guilty of blasphemy and desired to have him cruicified
On Sunday they were cheering and praise the coming King
Now they are shouting to crucify Him
1 Then the whole body of them got up and brought Him before Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.” 3 So Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “It is as you say.” 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” 5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee even as far as this place.” 6 When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem at that time.
Pilate determines its not in his pay grade so he attempts to send him off and he does
Pilate understands this man Jesus has done nothing deserving of death and attempts to explain that to the Jewish Paradises
But they insist
So Jesus goes before Herod
8 Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him. 9 And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.
Herod is excited and wants to see a miracle more than anything
Jesus is silent
Remember Isaiah 53 the sheep is silent as He is lead to slaughter
He goes back before Pilate
Now church please hear me Good Friday is good and physically we know that it isn’t good, it is painful and hard to even hear about
However Spiritually and Eternally it is the greatest thing that has ever happened in the entire Universe
What happens we have read about before
1 Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
I wanted to read it all because it is absolutely amazing
vs 4 says that Jesus Himself bore our griefs
Some of you have experienced some massive grief in your lifetime
Please understand that some 700 years before Jesus physically shows up
This is written about Jesus that He would bare your grief
To the point that God would smit Him
His own son
Then we come to vs 5 probably a famous verse that we just skim over and yet some 700 years before Jesus this is written about Jesus
that your sin and my sin would fall on Him
Our punishment would fall on Him the innocent perfect Son of God
So this just isnt a verse we can skim over
We in fact are healed and made right by Jesus being punished
Someone had to pay for your sin and my sin
And because of Jesus’s great love for you and I he willingly went into Jersualem knowing what it would cost to cover your debt of sin and my debt of sin
He was scourged and His scourging heals us
I said earlier it was hard to hear and painful to see and understand but eternally it is the greatest thing the universe has ever seen
1 Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; 3 and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face. 4 Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” 5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6 So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.” 8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
Jesus is scourged
Jesus is beaten and mocked while the crowds yells to crucify Him
Scourge means to whip someone as a punishment and to cause great suffering
So to go into detail and we did this last year
I want to read a few excerpts from an article we have used in the past
Dr. William D. Edwards, MD from the Mayo Clinic
Article on Physical Death of Jesus Christ
“Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripe like lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock
“Hypovolemic shock is an emergency condition in which severe blood or other fluid loss makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the body.”
as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.”
Just let that settle in your heart with scripture in mind that
So when you read about the scoring of Jesus you understand it is not comfortable
That when Jesus was beaten to understand what it cost Him
That our salvation cost the Son of God His life
Because Jesus paid our debt of sin we can be healed from the deadly disease called sin
26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
for us to fully understand his wounds it is more than a scrape on the knee
We have an excerpt we have used in the past
“Flogging was a legal preliminary to every Roman execution, and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in cases of desertion) were exempt. The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum or flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals Occasionally, staves also were used.
For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post. The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers or by one who alternated positions. The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the soldiers and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death. After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.”
Then The Doctor William Edwards goes on to give in detail the effects of the scourging of Jesus
“As the Roman soldiers repeatedly struck the victim’s back with full force, the iron balls would cause deep contusions, and the leather thongs and sheep bones would cut into the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive on the cross.”
We are set free because of His sacrifice and death
Church I know it is difficult to hear and think about flesh being ripped off and the amount of blood lose
But we need to understand that because of that we can now be set free
Understand this sin will always lead to death
And because of Jesus’s great love for us
Church when we read in Isaiah 53 we know that we are healed by the beating and scourging of Jesus
And church this is only part of the physically horribleness of good Friday
You might be thinking wait a min as if that is not enough
Church as we have said sin always leads to death
Jesus took on our sin
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Jesus Himself bore our sin
He took our sin and because sin always leads to death
Jesus died in our place because He took on our sin
The battle of sin has now been taken care of
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. 17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
Jesus is taken outside the city and nailed to a cross
The innocent son of God who because of His great love for us
Took on our sin
And because of that the Father cannot look on Him because He is sin and God the Father cannot be a part of sin
Jesus gives up His spirit and dies
And what do you do with dead people
You bury them
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
Church Jesus is buried
Because He has died
Because He has paid my debt of sin and your debt of sin
Sin has officially been defeated with the 3 greatest words every spoken
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It is Finished
And with that church Jesus paid your debt of sin
Jesus paid my debt of sin
So church as we come to our time of invitation
this evening we invite you to do business with God
Maybe you need to just be spend sometime in prayer at the alter this evening
Maybe you need to talk with someone about a relationship with Jesus
