22 Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter,
23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.

But they go there, and Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead
Jesus uses this occasion to authenticate Himself.
Sin cause sickness & death, Jesus came to undo it all

45 Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.
46 But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.
48 If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.”
49 Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about!
50 You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
Jesus withdraws to Ephraim
53 So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.
54 As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.

Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”
Because of this waste of oil, Judas goes to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard
Now the time has come and Jesus has to get them to react.

45 At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief.

They were afraid of Jesus
4 Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.
5 “Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied. “I Am he,” Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)
6 As Jesus said “I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground!
How did they get the courage: Peter reacted and cut the ear off.

12 So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.
13 First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.
This is where Peter denied Jesus the 1st time
(2) Next to Annas sent Him to Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin
24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
This is where Peter denied Jesus the 2nd & 3rd time
This is the Jewish religious trial, held at night—illegally according to their own laws.
Sanhedrin cannot legally execute anyone under Roman rule
So, Caiaphas could not sentence Jesus to death. It had to be a Roman governor.
(3) So took Him to Pilate early in the morning (Praetorium)
(4) When Pilate learns Jesus is from Galilee, he sends Him to Herod Antipas, who is in Jerusalem for Passover Luke 23:5-7
Herod Antipas was a tetrarch of Galilee, a local ruler descended from Herod the Great, while Pontius Pilate ruled as a Roman governor. Though Pilate was an appointed Roman official and Antipas was a local prince, they held roughly equal status in Rome’s eyes.
Herod hoped Jesus performed a sign.

Gospel John said Jesus carried His own cross - tradition
But other say Simon of Cyrene carried His Cross
Likely a Jewish pilgrim visiting Jerusalem for Passover. Jews had lived in the city of Cyrene (located in modern-day Libya)
Mark probably knew Simon. He mentions his sons
Mark 15:21 “21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.”
Romans 16:13 “13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.”
Luke tells us something interesting;
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

Forgive them Father - Luke 23:34 “34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”
Forgave the sinner - Luke 23:42–43 “42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.””
Care for His mother - John 19:26–27 “26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”

To hasten death, they sometimes requested to break the legs of the cricified
31 It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.
John 19:32–34 “32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.”

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split
52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.
20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.
21And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house,
22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
