Resurrection of the Lord, Easter Day (2)
Notes
Transcript
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
Mary, a young lady that Jesus had removed multiple demons from,
was grieving and was going to clean up after the men had taken Jesus
and placed him in the tomb two days earlier.
They had to hurry because they had to get him in before the Sabbath started, because they couldnt do any work on the Sabatth.
Mary was looking to care for the body of Jesus.
Even though Jesus had taught multiple times that things would happen exactly as they had, she was not looking for a risen savior.
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.
4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,
7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
Mary tells two disciples. Peter, and John, who also is writing the book of John, and emphasizes his self-proclaimed title of the one that Jesus loved.
These two disciples then run to the tomb.
John wants to make sure we know that they started off together, but he soon outran Peter.
When Peter finally gets there, He goes in first.
John is fast, but hes not the bravest of the bunch.
When Peter enters he sees the neatly laid funeral garments, with the folded face cloth.
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.
John, who can outrun Peter, finally goes in, and he sees the evidence, and he believes.
He believes that no grave robber would have taken the time to unwrap Jesus’ body and leave the wrappings neatly folded and undisturbed.
He believes that Jesus had risen from the dead.
Even though he doesn't understand just yet, that Jesus had been teaching this whole time that this week would go down exactly as it has...
Mary didn't get it either. Neither did Peter. None of the disciples did.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
Peter and John go back to the other disciples, but Mary stays there.
Crying. That's all she can do.
She sees two angels, one on either side of where Jesus was laid to rest.
We will look at this more next week.
The angels ask her why she is crying.
The angels have no clue why she is crying..… this is the single most important event in human history....
The angels expected the disciples to be waiting at the tomb for the morning of the third day, that's what Jesus taught them, they should have been waiting for him to bust out of that tomb at sunrise on the third day, exactly like he said he would.
But Mary was at the tomb crying that someone had stolen Jesus’s body.
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
But Mary was at the tomb crying that someone had stolen Jesus’s body.
When you are looking for a dead Jesus, you don't recognize the living Jesus.
Jesus, just like the angels, is wondering why she is crying.
This is the best day ever for humans.
Everything he had said had been true.
He had backed up his words with the one thing that proved that the words were all true.
He promised to be the sacrifice that would redeem humanity and allow humans to return to a right relationship with the Creator God.
Since Adam and Eve’s fall, God has been laying out a plan to redeem humanity.
From Genesis chapter 3 onward...the bible tells of God’s love for us and his grace and compassion for sinful humanity.
And the empty tomb was evidence of it.
His appearances after his resurrection are our guarantee that He had defeated death, and we will have the same results.
Just as he promised.
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
But Mary was at the tomb crying that someone had stolen Jesus’s body.
When you are looking for a dead Jesus, you dont recognize the living Jesus.
Until he speaks your name.
You can come to church every Sunday of your life.
You can come on Wednesday too.
But until you hear the living Jesus call your name, you wont recognize the significance of the fact that he is the living Jesus.
He is not dead Jesus.
He is beaten, crucified, dead, buried, rose again on the third day Jesus.
and that changes everything.
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
But Mary was at the tomb crying that someone had stolen Jesus’s body.
When you are looking for a dead Jesus, you don't recognize the living Jesus.
Until he speaks your name.
Once he speaks your name, you run and tell everyone that you have seen the risen savior, your lord.
You tell everyone that he died for you, so that your sins would be forgiven.
You tell everyone that he died for their sins as well.
You tell everyone that he has risen from the dead and that he lives.
You tell everyone that he is.....Risen.
He is risen indeed.
