[Introduction]
My names Matt...
CELEBRATE —> Happy Resurrection Sunday!!
[Introduce Text]
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
[Prayer]
Today we WILL talk about the Resurrection.. But really we’ll talk about the “Gospel”
“I’ve heard the word.. what’s it mean...?
Lexham Theological Wordbook Gospel
A gospel is an announcement of good news. In particular, the gospel is the announcement that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection have brought about salvation for Israel and the world.
Gospel = “Good News!”

Work through Ephesians 2
[Main Point]
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
You cannot have the good news of the Gospel unless you hear of the bad news:
Our world is broken and ravaged by sin
There is consequence to your evil
God has a standard for good, we fail to meet that standard
Even worse, we are dead in our sin. Actively following the course of the world
We love what pleases and satisfies us more than loving what is true and good
3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
The Good News (Gospel) is SO GOOD because the bad news was SO BAD and so hopeless
23 ...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...
——————————
Allegory
Imagine:
A boy grows up in an abusive home
Neglected
Seeking love from his parents
Convinced that his value comes from what he can earn
Sees what others have and is angry that they have what he doesn’t have
One day in anger, he breaks into a man’s home and takes what is his. Destroys things in the home and sets the home on fire, burning other surrounding homes
This is like us in our sin.
We care only for ourselves and our good
When hurt, we return the favor
When content, we find contentment in ourselves just long enough to feel the pull in our heart for more
When others succeed over us, we feel threatened
And left on our own, this is where we would stay
BUT GOD - Finish the three texts
Look for the “WHY?”
——————————
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
23 ...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...
24 AND are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus...
WHY?
God loves you

Allegory
Imagine:
The boy is captured by the police and handed back to the man who he stole from
The man looks at the boy.. And loves him
He pays the fines and takes on the debt incurred by the damage the boy created
He brings the boy into his family and calls him his own
He pays the price of the boy’s evil and gives him a new home, a new inheritance, a new family

When Jesus died, he died for YOU
When Jesus was raised, he was raised for YOU
3 Primary Outcomes of the Gospel
Salvation - We have victory
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
On the Cross, we are united with Christ in his punishment
It is as if WE were the one’s who died
His death is counted to us
In the Resurrection, we are united with Christ in his Victory
It is as if WE were the one’s who
Life eternal
Ultimate satisfaction
Freedom from evil, fear, anxiety
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

3 Primary Outcomes of the Gospel
Salvation - We have victory
Proof - We have confidence
How do we know that Jesus was who he said he was?
BECAUSE he rose!
God loves you even despite the worst of your sins
PROVE IT!
Jesus was sent to die for you while you were still a sinner
God is powerful even when you struggle to see his power in your life
PROVE IT!
Jesus Christ was destroyed and condemned and yet he rose despite death, putting cosmic enemies under his feet
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
3 Primary Outcomes of the Gospel
Salvation - We have victory
Proof - We have confidence
Purpose - We have a new reason to live
You have a NEW purpose
——————————
Allegory
How does the boy respond to his new family?
He works in joy with his new father
He goes and gives the same love to others
He remembers who he was and where he was, and is so thankful for where he is today

[Conclusion]
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
If you are in Christ, your labor is not in vain
Your sacrifice
Your love for others
You work hard at work as if you are working for God
You respond to people who wrong you with the same compassion that God had when he went to the cross for you
You love your family and invest in them, thankful for the opportunity to shape future generations
You join a church family that isn’t perfect, but loves God and reminds you of his goodness
Worship team can come up
If you are not in Christ...
Then you will always continue to strive
A blow to your work will be a blow to your identity
A wound in a relationship will mean the end of that relationship
Self preservation will always rule
Self sacrifice will seem silly and foolish
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you...

Communion
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
