We left off yesterday when physically it wasn’t a good day but spiritually and eternally it was the greatest thing the world or universe has ever seen
Jesus had just said it is finished
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Jesus had just died
He was just beaten to a pulp
Their teacher and friend was just murdered
It is believable for them to be a bit fearful
At this point you can almost feel the anxiety and frustration in the pit of your stomach
You may be thinking what in the world is happening
I mean just a week ago they were shouting Hossana Hossana to Jesus as He came into Jerusalem and now they have killed Him
Jesus had just died and was buried
And in the midst of this you might be thinking all hope is gone
All hope is lost
Matthew 27:59–60 NASB95
59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
The hope they had that He would survive is gone at this point
The hope they would have had to continue on is gone
Their friend was dead and now has been layed in the tomb
The tomb at this point has been sealed
Matthew 27:62–66 NASB95
62 Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’ 64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
The tomb is sealed
The jewish religious leaders are so concerned that the disiciples will steal the body of Jesus because He is dead
They go and ask Pilate
give us soliders
Pilate says you have your own people secure it yourselves
If you are a disciple and you are hearing this and seeing this
You have to be a bit concerned at this point
The stress and anxiety start to swell up in your world maybe
Maybe a bit concerned about your own personal safety I mean you just watched what happened to Jesus your friend and teacher
Maybe as we said earlier you are at the point when all hope is lost
Maybe on this in the grave Saturday you resinate with that
Maybe you have experienced moments or a time in your life
When you have watched life turn upside down or inside out and you are left stressed or paniced
Maybe you have been to a point in your life where it seems like all hope is lost
Maybe you are at that moment right now
Maybe you are barely keeping it together and stressed to the point where it seems like all hope is lost and you are just watching life go by
And just like the disicples
We need to run back to scripture and truth
I know in our world that is not the popular thing to do
When it is easier to go see a someone or watch social media or read another book
We should be running to scripture the answers are there
They were there for the disciples and church they are there for you
Mark 10:33–34 NASB95
33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 “They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”
Remember from Sunday the comma
Jesus said these things would happen
These things would happen and they have thus far
And then the comma
The period means an end to the thought
Just like when we would think the death and burial of Jesus would be the end of the thought we must remind ourselves of the truth of Gods word is a comma
That he will rise 3 days later
When we are up against the struggles of life and all hope seems lost we turn or run back to the truth of Gods word
Jesus’s death paid our debt of sin and what it cost it was His life
Yesterday we said that we shouldn’t waste what Jesus gave us through His death
That we as beleivers are to read our Bibles and then put them to action
We must run back to the Truth of Gods word when we seem stressed or paniced to the point of us thinking all hope lost
The truth of Gods word is
John 16:33 NASB95
33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
That no matter how you are feeling about a situation or problem in your life is that God has overcome the world
To know and serve and love a God who knows we will have tribulation in the world and will walk with us through it makes all the difference
See its vital knowing that God has overcome whatever it is you are facing right now
I don’t mean to make light of that situation just like we can’t make light of what the disciplies were facing that in between day
And yet the truth is the same
God is still the God of the universe
God has overcome the world
You have heard the saying when it rains it pours right
When you are back up against it and it keeps coming
MY dad said we put on our rain coat or grab our umbrella
Church our rain coat, and our umbrella is the Word of God to remind ourselves of truth
More truth in the midst of the unknown on Saturday
Deuteronomy 31:6–8 NASB95
6 “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” 7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. 8 “The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
It seems so simple of a reminder yet God here reminds us
That He goes before you and I
That He does not leave or forsake us
Church please hear me with your ears
Even when you think or even when it feels like God is absence that is not the truth
Your feelings do not dictate the truth about a situation
Because the truth was written in a book called the Bible
The truth says that God does not leave you and in fact goes out before you
Another truth for the wondering person on the inbetween Saturday while the Son of the Living God is in the grave
Luke 24:45–46 NASB95
45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
Jesus Himself said he would rise again from the dead on the 3rd day
We can trust the Word of God
We can be patient for God to work out His plan on His time
After all He is the creator God I think we can trust Him
Jesus Himself told the disciples that He would die and then on the 3rd day rise from the dead
And yet church I can’t but think they were a bit paniced and they phyiscally walked with Jesus and they missed it
Which is why it is so important for us to be in the Word of God ourselves
We need constant reminding of those simple truths
We can rest and find peace from this anxious stress filled world in the Word of God
Church dare I say it lets start there instead of running around trying to find an answer the stress and anxiety and frustration of this world
Let us seek the Lord through His word and we find Rest and peace that can only come from God
Another truth to be reminded of on this in between Saturday
John 14:3 NASB95
3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
One day church Jesus will return to gather His family
To take to Heaven for eternity
The truth is that Jesus didn’t die on the cross and was buried and then raised again to say good luck with life
No Jesus is currently in Heaven making rooms for those who have repented of their sin and trusted Jesus to be Lord of their lives
And one Day church He will return to gather His Children and bring them Home for all eternity
We are one day closer that the revaltion of that truth
Our church as a church is as Charlie Kirk said, “Make Heaven Crowded”
That is our job to share the greatest news the world has ever heard to a lost and broken and wondering world to grow the Kingdom of God
To make Heaven Crowded
And yet church maybe you are still struggling on this Sautrday
Lamentations 3:19–23 NASB95
19 Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness. 20 Surely my soul remembers And is bowed down within me. 21 This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. 22 The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Another truth that God’s compassions never fail
That you might be in the thick of the struggle and you need to remind yourself that tomorrow is a new and fresh start
That God’s compasions are a new every morning
That God is faithful
This world and man are not so much faithful but God is
Finally church
Psalm 30:5 NASB95
5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.
I am reminded on this in between Saturday that weeping may last for the night
You might very well be at the end of your rope in the night
But
See how that But changes the trajectory of the story
That but is followed by the Shout of Joy in the morning
I heard the song by JJ Heller called Who you are
It explains stories from peoples perspective who are expeirencing failure and it is with people reminding themselves they don’t know what God is doing but they do know who God
Sometimes you might be facing some incredible hard struggles and difficulties or trauma’s in life and I can’t tell you why or what is going on except that God is the God of the universe
And scripture says the shout of Joy comes in the morning
You may be in a really long night
And yet church as we have scene God is still at work
We don’t always know what God is up to or why but church through His word we can know Him more intimately
We can remind ourselves of the many truthes of God’s faithfulness, of His grace and mercy, that His compassions are new every morning
That He doesn’t leave us or forsake us
That he will come back one day to collect and gather His kids
And church that the shout of Joy that comes in the morning is coming tomorrow
Because scripture tell us that Jesus will rise of the third day
So as we come to a close this morning
Maybe you are in the dark of the night
And maybe you need to be reminded of GOds truth
maybe you need to spend sometime at the alter in prayer or maybe you need to grab someone and come to the altar and spend sometime in prayer
Maybe you want to speak with someone about a personal relationship with Jesus
Would you be obedient
Except that it isn’t
When there is no hope we turn to scripture
Jesus told them what would happen
We can trust the Word of God
We can trust God to fulfill His Word
