Church we have had a great time over the last few days
We have gathered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
We have preached though those events of each of those nights
If you missed them I would encourage you to go back through and watch them
We left off Saturday
Matthew 27:62–66 NASB95
62 Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’ 64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
Jesus was dead and in the grave
They had sealed up the grave
We even spent time reading about the beating and death of Jesus
Jesus was dead
And what do you do with dead people
You bury them
Jesus has been buried
Church 3 days later Jesus had paid for your sin
The cost of Sin is no more
With Jesus’s death has once and for all paid for you rdebt of sin
You are no longer on the hook for that payment
Romans 5:15 NASB95
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
Sin entered through one man Adam
We are all born with a sin nature because sin entered the world through Adam
And through on man the grace and mercy can abound to the many
Jesus paid for your debt of sin and my debt of sin
Didn’t think you would show up on Sunday Morning, on Resurrection Sunday and be called and sinner in need of savior
You must first realize your own sin because without doing that you don’t think you need saved from anything
See it is through Jesus that we can experience grace and mercy
Because through Jesus’s death on the cross your debt of sin was paid for
Hebrews 7:26–27 NASB95
26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
We don’t continue march animals into the church and slaughter them to atone for your sin
To atone means - to make amends, reparation, or compensation for a wrong, offense, or error
Sin requires blood shed appease God’s judgement
And church as we have seen Jesus did that once and for all
with those 3 little words it is finished
Romans 6:6–7 NASB95
6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
There was no more debt to be paid for sin
Because of His death I am no longer slaves to sin
Because of Jesus’s death you are no longer slaves to sin
That is what the death of Jesus accomplished
And that brings us to this morning
This day is what sets Christianity apart from every other religion on the face of the earth
Luke 24:1–6 NASB95
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; 5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6 “He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,
They ladies Mary and the other Mary were going to the tomb to finish the burial process
They were going to finish caring for the dead body of their friend and teacher Jesus
As they come up to the tomb they find that the stone which was used to seal the tomb where Jesus was laid has been rolled away
Curiosity gets them and they go inside and realize that Jesus whom they had watched be buried in that grave is gone
I love Lukes account for 2 reasons
The first is that it says that the 2 mens stood in dazzling clothing and I dont know why but I have always thought that was awesome
Then the angels ask the ladies
Why do you seek the living among the dead
Church dead people are in the tomb
Living people don’t hangout or stay in the tombs
Living people don’t stay in graves
Jesus who was once dead is now alive
The tomb is opened not so Jesus could get out but so that we could look in and have evidence for ourselves that Jesus is no longer there
On Friday it was it is finished that changed the world
And now 3 days later He is Risen has forever changed the world
Jesus is alive and there is rejoicing in that
The shout of Joy that comes in the morning is the empty tomb
Now we could get excited because Peter and John got to experience there friend again
When someone is gone and they come back we get excited
But church the resurrection has huge implications
If Jesus’s death meant that the debt of sin was paid for
Jesus’s resurrection meant that for the first time we could defeat death in Jesus
His resurrection meant that we are no longer bound by death
That he could now take dead men and women and give them life through Him
This is what changes the entire world
Romans 6:8–9 NASB95
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
Church this is what the resurrection of Jesus accomplished
He gave us life and life everlasting
This is what the resurrection of Christ means for us today
That sin has been paid for
That death as been defeated
Church for us this morning it means there is forgiveness at the tomb
You can have forgiveness this morning because of the resurrection of Christ
you might be wrestling with what you think is no way God can forgive me
And yet church that is exactly why He went to the cross and walked out of the tomb to forgive you of your sin and to give you a life through Him
That life we can have or already have through Him
Romans 8:11 NASB95
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
This is what salvation is and that is what the cross and empty tomb mean
This is why we can have life because of the empty tomb
This is why we get excited during the Easter Season
It is why we preach on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
It is why we get extra excited on Resurrection Sunday because church He is alive and through Him
You and I can have life
Without the resurrection Jesus is just a good guy
A good teacher in a long line of good teachers who has since died
And yet that is not the case because we can look in the tomb and see it is not empty
He is Risen
Church because of the Cross and the empty tomb we can have life and we share that with a lost world
It is called the Gospel
The Good News is that Jesus is alive and church that changes everything
Colossians 2:12–14 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
This is the good news that Jesus saves
that Jesus is still in the business of taking dead men and women and giving them life because of the empty tomb
When you were dead in your transgressions
When you will still stuck in sin Jesus died for you and came back to life
When He brought you back to life through His resurrection he has completely and for all time forgiven you of all your transgressions
Praise the Lord church
that is possibly only through Jesus’s death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb 3 days later
So as we come to close this morning
We will call the band up
As they come up
Maybe you are here today and you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
You have not repented of your sin or trusted Jesus to be Lord of your life
You are still dead in sin
This morning we would invite you to speak with someone at the front who can show you thought scripture how you can repent of your sin and trust Jesus this morning
Because this morning is for you
The resurrection is to give dead men and women life
Or maybe you already have a personal relaitonship with Jesus and you simply need to spend sometime in prayer at the alter
Or mabye there is another decision you need to make this morning
Would you be obedient
The alter is open
