Introduction

Greetings…
In our Sunday morning sermon series on “Lessons From Lyric Titles” we find ourselves looking at a familiar hymn “Night With Ebon Pinion.”
Now before we dive into this study, let me remind everyone that “ebon pinion” is an old archaic poetic term which translates out to “black wings” or “dark wings.”
Thus, the song is about the wings of darkness that covered the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus was praying and awaiting Judas’ betrayal.
In the Garden of Gethsemane there are a few things I want us to consider about that night, and more importantly why Jesus went there.
So with that in mind let’s begin by understanding…

Jesus In The Garden

Wings Of Darkness

Now leading up to Jesus and his apostles being in the Garden of Gethsemane within the Mount of Olives, we remember several things of significant importance takes place.
You have, while in the room with his disciples, Jesus washing their feet.
At that time, remember, Jesus hints of Judas’ betrayal.
John 13:9–11 ESV
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
Later, they partook of the Passover feast.
At this feast we find Jesus greatly disturbed knowing he was with the one who would betray him soon.
John 13:21 ESV
21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
After Peter asking Jesus “Lord, who is it” we find Jesus’ response in John 13:26.
John 13:26 ESV
26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
After this we see the “mood” if you will change.
Because upon finishing the Passover meal with his apostles, he instituted what we now call the Lord’s Supper with the passover emblems.
Matthew 26:26–27 ESV
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you,
Matthew 26:28–29 ESV
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
This prompted them to then “sing a hymn” indicating joy.
Matthew 26:30 ESV
30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
James 5:13 ESV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
That joy, could not be bottled up forever however.
That “night with ebon pinion” would soon take over as Jesus went to pray before the Father.
Matthew 26:38–39 ESV
38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Matthew 26:42 ESV
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
Now for his third and final time to go and pray I want us to look at Luke’s account in Luke 22:41-44.
Luke 22:41–42 ESV
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
Luke 22:43–44 ESV
43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Truly, the nigh with ebon pinion had come if while being strengthened by his angels from heaven, he was still in such agony he had sweat drops of blood falling down from his face.
Yes, the “wings of darkness” had was covering the our Savior has he prayed to our Father.
And yet, through all this, we find…

Rays Of Hope

In John’s account we find how Jesus ended this prayer with the Father.
In John 17:1-26 we read of Jesus’ plea to the Father, for the result he is expecting to come from his following the Father’s will.
John 17:17 ESV
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
John 17:20–21 ESV
20 I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
John 17:25–26 ESV
25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Summary

Even being in such agony as to have sweat drops of blood coming from his head as he prostrated himself on the ground before the Father, he still ended that agonizing time with a ray of hope for those he was going to suffer for.
He was going to continue to make it known, the love the Father had for him, and he for them.

Many Are Celebrating

We Should Be Celebrating The Risen Savior

I’m thankful that many today will be remembering that Jesus did empty himself, so as to be able to become flesh, be born of woman, and suffer at the hands of his creation, only to rise on the third day to be King of kings and Lord of lords.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
I’m thankful that many today all over the world will be reminding that death could not keep hold of Jesus.
Acts 2:24 ESV
24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Romans 1:18 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Revelation 1:18 ESV
18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
I’m thankful that so many today will be looking to Jesus and as the Savior of all humanity.
Acts 4:12 ESV
12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Summary

I’m hopeful, that God’s true messages of salvation, will not be subverted by the chaos Satan has instilled in so many minds concerning the love of Christ and his sacrifice.
This is where you and I come in brothers and sisters.
Today, is our opportunity to help the helpless find the truth, hear the truth, and obey the truth.
Today, and each day moving forward is our opportunity to tell the souls we come in contact with today, tomorrow, and in the future, that that “Night of Ebon Pinion” concluded with a “Bursting of Hope.”

Conclusion

Night With Ebon Pinion
Abba, Father, Father, if indeed it may,
Let this cup of anguish pass from me, I pray.
Yet, if it must be suffered, by me, theine only son,
Abba, Father, Father, let they will be done.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV

Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
