· 26 viewsEaster declares that Jesus is alive—but many people still live as if they’re buried. We celebrate resurrection while remaining trapped behind stones of sin, shame, fear, and spiritual stagnation. The Gospel accounts reveal that the stone was set, sealed, and then shaken—not to keep Jesus in, but to reveal that death had been defeated. This message confronts the tension between believing in resurrection and actually living in it, calling both unbelievers and believers to step out of the tomb and walk in the power of the risen Christ.

Subtitle: From Death to Life—Why You Can’t Stay in the Tomb
Introduction
Introduction
Easter is not just the story of Jesus coming out of the grave—it is the story of us being brought out with Him. The resurrection is not something we simply celebrate; it is something we participate in.
If Jesus only saved your sin and he’s still the Cross.
If Jesus only declared you righteous he’s still in the grave.
If you are walking in resurrection power, then Jesus has risen just as he said.
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
And yet here’s the tension we have to face:
If the stone has been rolled away… why are so many still living like it hasn’t?
In 2010, 33 miners were trapped underground for 69 days. When rescuers finally reached them, they sent a message:
“We are coming for you.”
But rescue didn’t begin when they came out.
Rescue began when someone reached them in the darkness.
God meets you in the grave—but He never intends for you to stay there.
We have been talking all week about the power of Holy Week:
the power that we find in the cross.
the power that we find in the grave.
and the power that we find in the resurrection.
Question of the Day:
👉 “Do people find you among the living—or among the dead?”
Roadmap:
We’re going to see the importance of the Stone that sealed the tomb. The Stone becomes a major marker in the Resurrection story with four clear movements—and if you miss the progression, you’ll miss where you are in the resurrection story.
The Stone was Set—that’s the reality of our death.
The Stone was Sealed—that’s the enforcement of that death.
The Stone was Shaken—that’s the power of God at work.
The Stone was Rolled Away—that’s the invitation to respond.
So here’s the question you need to ask yourself today:
👉 “Do people find you among the living—or among the dead?”
Sermon Outline:
This morning we are going to view the story through the eyes of Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph.
55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

📌 The Stone Was Set — Dead Means Done
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
The Stone of a Declaration of Death
The Stone of a Declaration of Death
Nothing alive goes behind the stone.
Nothing alive goes behind the stone.
The Stone allows the dead the “Rest in Peace”
The Stone allows the dead the “Rest in Peace”
Kim’s Mom hated spiders. When she was buried she made sure she had a sealed concrete box to keep on the critters out.
This is a declaration of our death as well.
This is a declaration of our death as well.
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
“Dead people don’t cry out for help. Dead people don’t reach for God. Dead people stay where they are unless something happens to them.”
We tend to minimize sin, but it placed us in a tomb.
We tend to minimize sin, but it placed us in a tomb.
I disturbed with no hope.
The stone represents that finality. Dead means done.
Application:
And until you understand that, you will never fully understand the power of what God has done. We tend to minimize sin as if it just makes us a little off track. But, It shut us off from life with God. The stone was set—and dead means done.

But the story doesn’t stop with death. Because the stone wasn’t just set…
📌 The Stone Was Sealed — What’s Dead Is Declared Final
📌 The Stone Was Sealed — What’s Dead Is Declared Final
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
The Stone was Sealed with Authority
The Stone was Sealed with Authority
Matthew tells us they “made the tomb secure.” That means this wasn’t just about closing a grave—it was about controlling it.
A Roman seal represented authority. It was a public declaration:
A Roman seal represented authority. It was a public declaration:
“This is under our power. This is final. This will not change.”
To break that seal was to defy the authority of Rome itself.
To break that seal was to defy the authority of Rome itself.
The world is looking at Jesus in that tomb and saying—
The world is looking at Jesus in that tomb and saying—
“This story is over.”
“This situation is finished.”
“Nothing is getting in—and nothing is getting out.”
Our tomb is sealed as well
Our tomb is sealed as well
The enemy doesn’t just want you struggling—he wants you sealed.
Sealed by your past.
Sealed by your past.
Sealed by your shame.
Sealed by your shame.
Sealed with lies like:
Sealed with lies like:
“You’ll always be this way”
“You’ve gone too far”
“Nothing is ever going to change”
The Stone is guarded.
The Stone is guarded.
They didn’t just want Him buried—they wanted Him contained.
They didn’t just want Him buried—they wanted Him contained.
There are outside forces that want you isolated and alone with no hope and not rescue.
There are outside forces that want you isolated and alone with no hope and not rescue.
The enemy will do everything in its power to keep help from coming to you.
You can’t get out and no one is getting in.
Application:
Where have you accepted something as final…that God never called finished?
Where have you agreed with the seal?
Because what the enemy declared permanent, God is about to prove powerless.
Transition

So now the stone is set…
The tomb is sealed…
Everything says this is over…
But then— God steps into what was declared final.
And everything changes.
📌 The Stone Was Shaken — God Brings Life in Dead Places
📌 The Stone Was Shaken — God Brings Life in Dead Places
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
God moves heaven and Earth to bring life.
God moves heaven and Earth to bring life.
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake…
The earth shook when Jesus died.
The earth shook when Jesus died.
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
The earth shook again at the Resurrection.
The earth shook again at the Resurrection.
Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
Before the stone is moved…Jesus is already alive.
Before the stone is moved…Jesus is already alive.
God moves heaven and earth for your resurrection
God moves heaven and earth for your resurrection
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
What the enemy is guarding on the outside doesn’t effect the Power of God on the inside.
What the enemy is guarding on the outside doesn’t effect the Power of God on the inside.
Resurrection happens:
Resurrection happens:
Inside the tomb
Where no one can enter
By the power of God alone
You might be thinking this morning, “Can God get to me sealed in the tomb and guarded by sin and shame?”
Can God break through and bring healing to my soul.
I’ve got good news for you today:
The power of God doesn’t need to break through anything.
There is no seal and no guard that can stop the power of his resurrection.
The God that created you works from the inside out not the outside in.
There’s nothing the enemy can do to stop your resurrection.
In your tomb, in your prison you can call on the name of the Lord he will save you right now.
(Salvation Invitation)
Resurrection happens before release.
Resurrection happens before release.

And this is where the story of Lazarus gives us such a powerful picture. When Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, Lazarus responded. Life had come back into his body. But when he came out, he was still wrapped in grave clothes—his hands bound, his feet bound, his face covered.
He was alive, but not yet free.
Resurrected, but not yet released.
That means life came first, and freedom came after. And that’s where many believers find themselves. God has already done the miracle of bringing you to life, but you are still carrying the remnants of the grave—old habits, old mindsets, old patterns.
You’re alive—but still bound.
And that’s why Jesus looked at the people around Lazarus and said, “Unbind him, and let him go.” Because while only God can give life, He often uses His people to help others walk in freedom.
Application:
Some of you are saved—but still stuck.
Alive in Christ
But bound in habits
Bound in thinking
Bound in patterns
So the question becomes:
If you’ve been made alive… why are you still standing in the grave?
📌 The Stone Was Rolled Away — If You’re Alive, Come Out
📌 The Stone Was Rolled Away — If You’re Alive, Come Out
3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large.
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
The Stone revealed the Resurrection
The Stone revealed the Resurrection
The angel didn’t move the stone so Jesus could get out. Jesus was already gone. The stone was moved so others could see in.
What was sealed and guarded is now open and exposed.
What was sealed and guarded is now open and exposed.
If you’ve been raised with Christ—then the tomb is trespassing on your life.
If you’ve been raised with Christ—then the tomb is trespassing on your life.
If God has made you alive, then the place you used to belong is no longer where you are meant to stay.
The barrier that was too great for you to move has already been removed by the power of God. What you could never do for yourself, God has already done.
Your Stone requires a response
Your Stone requires a response
If you’re alive—you have to come out.
If you’re alive—you have to come out.
You can’t stay hidden. You can’t stay bound. You can’t stay passive. Resurrection life is not just something you believe—it’s something you walk in. It shows up in your choices, your habits, your relationships, your obedience.
Application:
So here we are.
You were in the tomb. Dead. Sealed. Without hope. But God stepped in. He brought life where there was none. He broke what held you in. He opened what you could not move.
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
“Jesus is not in the tomb anymore. So the only question left is—why are you?”
Gospel Invitation / Altar Call
Gospel Invitation / Altar Call
Some of you are still in the tomb spiritually. You’ve never trusted Christ. You’re not just struggling—you’re dead in sin.
But Jesus didn’t come to make you better. He came to make you alive. Today, you can turn from your sin, place your faith in Him, and step into new life.
Others of you are alive—but you’re still sitting in the grave. Still bound. Still stuck. Still living like the stone hasn’t moved. And today is the day you step out. You confess. You surrender. You take a real, visible step of obedience.
Because the stone has been rolled away.
The grave is open.
Life is available.
So come out.
Because you can’t live resurrection life… if you’re still sitting in the tomb.
