Intro

Exodus 20:1–7 KJV 1900
1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Commandment # 1: Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Commandment # 2: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Commandment # 3: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain
Remember, God doesn’t say “don’t take it”… He says, “Don’t misuse it.”...
When we “take” His name…
We carry it… exalt it… lift it up..
Because of this, we spoke about the fact that we:
a. Better do church correctly because of His name
b. Better witness correctly because of His name
c. Better remember correctly because of His name
But now we move on to commandment #4:
Exodus 20:8 KJV 1900
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Can we recall to the introduction of this in that:
God gave these laws to the nation of Israel
They were never a means of salvation
9 of the 10 commandments are repeated in the new testament, with the exclusion of this one right here...
There is not one single clear verse that commands the new testament church to keep the sabbath laws...
I want to begin this portion of study by simply showing you what this meant for Israel:
Remember the divisions God makes:
1 Corinthians 10:32 KJV 1900
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
Jews
Gentiles
Church of God
Order of study:
What the Sabbath was for Israel
Why it’s not for you
What we can learn from it

I. What the Sabbath was for Israel

1. It was a remembrance and rest after deliverance from 430 years of Egyptian captivity, like God rested after six days of creation

Deuteronomy 5:12–15 KJV 1900
12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. 13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: 14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. 15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Exodus 31:13 KJV 1900
13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.
The sabbath was a day of recognition for Israel
The Noahtic covenant was given… it’s sign: the rainbow
The Abrahamic covenant was given… it’s sign: circumcision
The Mosaic covenant was given… it’s sign: the sabbath

2. The Nation of Israel stayed home and rested on the Sabbath

Exodus 16:29 KJV 1900
29 See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
Exodus 20:10 KJV 1900
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exodus 31:15 KJV 1900
15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Leviticus 23:3 KJV 1900
3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

3. They could not build a fire on the sabbath

Exodus 35:3 KJV 1900
3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

4. They could not cook on the sabbath

Exodus 16:23 KJV 1900
23 And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

5. They could not gather sticks on the sabbath

Numbers 15:32–35 KJV 1900
32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34 And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. 35 And the Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.

6. They could not go to the store, buy or selling anything on the Sabbath

Nehemiah 10:31 KJV 1900
31 And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.

7. They could not carry anything out of their house on the Sabbath

Jeremiah 17:22 KJV 1900
22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

8. They could not tread out the wine press, reap the harvest or load the animals on the Sabbath

Nehemiah 13:15 KJV 1900
15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

9. The price for breaking the Sabbath in the old testament was death

Exodus 31:14–15 KJV 1900
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Exodus 35:2 KJV 1900
2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.
Bro. Sasser said in Israel Jews would hire Gentiles to turn their lights on and off for them on the Sabbath

II. Now I want to show you why the Sabbath isn’t for you and I

1. The Sabbath is entirely a Jewish Institution

Exodus 31:12–17 KJV 1900
12 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you. 16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
It was a sign of the covenant between the children of Israel and God forever
Not between God and the children of God
Not between God and the spiritual Jew of Romans 2:29
Romans 2:29 KJV 1900
29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
3. Not between God and the church or the Christian
4. But between God and the physical offspring of Jacob (Israel)
The commandment was NOT given to Adam, though it foreshadowed the days of creation
The commandment was NOT given to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph or Noah
The Sabbath law was reserved to be given to Israel under the law
Nehemiah 9:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: 14 And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
Throughout the old testament we have over 112 references to the Sabbath observance...
There is not ONE clear instruction for the church age believer to observe it...
Jeremiah 31:31–34 KJV 1900
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand To bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my covenant they brake, Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: For I will forgive their iniquity, And I will remember their sin no more.
You don’t see a single person from Adam to Moses keeping the sabbath day or being put to death for not keeping it…
Paul in Hebrews asks why we would want to go back to the old law… Because we have something better…
Colossians 2:16 KJV 1900
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
The Book of Sanhedrin says, “It is better to give more heed to the letters of the scribes than to the letters of the scriptures.”

III. What we can learn from it

The law was given plainly…
The law was spoken clearly…
The law was “simple”…
Yet it all came down to:
Remembrance: for what God had done
That remembrance would drive obedience…
Are we willing to remember so we can be driven to obey?
It’s simple…
Just comes down to a choice of obedience…
