Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Encourage you to open your Bible or the pew Bible to read along because we will also examine the surrounding verses during the Sermon.
Matthew 28:1–10 “1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.””
This is the Word of the Lord.
Let us Pray:
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.” (1 Chronicles 29:11–13, ESV)
THE CONCLUSION
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
He is Risen! He is risen indeed!
Indeed = Yes = Amen!
What does the word “Amen” mean?
It means that I should be assured that these petitions are acceptable to our heavenly Father and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this manner and has promised to hear us. Amen, Amen, that is, Yes, Yes, it shall be so.
Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions The Seventh and Last Petition
119 So God has briefly placed before us all the distress that may ever come upon us, so that we might have no excuse whatever for not praying. But all depends upon this, that we learn also to say “Amen.” This means that we do not doubt that our prayer is surely heard and that what we pray shall be done [
The Glory is His, whether we acknowledge it or not. There are some who refuse to acknowledge Him and His glory, and those who fall to their knees and worship him in faith and with joy. One day every knee will bow in heaven and on earth.
The Works and Words of Jesus
The differing responses to Jesus:
Leading up to this passage is a parallel passage, like the other side of the same coin, maybe a little like the upside down world.
The differing responses to Jesus:
A. The response of the mockers to Jesus suffering in the darkness of God’s judgment and the failing of the sun
B. The response of the soldiers at the Cross.
Matthew 27:54 “54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!””
C. The response of the soldiers at the Tomb.
Matthew 28:4 “4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.”
Matthew 28:11-15
D. The response of the disciples.
i. Mary Magdelene and the other Mary

a. Do not fear

E. The response of the Chief Priests and Pharisees.
Matthew 27:62–66 “62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.”
Repeat: Matthew 28:11–15 “11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.”
Revelation 5
