John 1:1–5 NIV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5 describes Jesus as the eternal "Word" (Logos) who was with God and was God from the beginning, acting as the creator of all things.
He is identified as the source of life and light, which shines in the darkness and cannot be overcome.
This passage establishes Jesus' divinity, pre-existence, and role in creation.
The Eternal Word: Jesus existed before creation and is not a created being.
Divinity: The Word was both with God and was God.
Creation: All things were made through Him.
Light and Life: Jesus brings spiritual life and light to humanity.
Victory Over Darkness: The darkness (sin/evil) cannot overcome the light.
As we come up to this time of year, Jesus death and resurrection we need to remind ourselves of what God has done for us.
Romans 5:8 NIV
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
John 3:16 NIV
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 8:3–5 NIV
3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
John 1, is considered one of the most doctrinally rich chapters in the Bible. Written around A.D. 90, John reflects on the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, emphasising key doctrines such as creation, incarnation, and regeneration.
The commentary section breaks down the revelations about Jesus, referred to as the Lamb, highlighting aspects of His eternality, personality, deity, creativity, life, and light.
It also discusses the purpose of the Lamb, including the announcement and acceptance of regeneration. The article further explores the incarnation of the Lamb, detailing its significance and timing, as well as the role of John the Baptist as the forerunner.
Finally, it addresses the initial followers of Jesus, including John, Andrew, Simon Peter, Philip, and Nathanael.
The conclusion metaphorically references "sparrows in winter," suggesting themes of hope and resilience.
