Tenebrae service (Part 2)
Video Sunday is Coming
*Pray**
Welcome - [ 2 Minutes ]
Mat: Pick it up at Jesus' Arrest - (Recap the night before).1. Recap & First Blowing (2 Candles)
Welcome to Night 2 of Tenebrae Service. Tenebrae means Shadows, we blow out a candle to show the betrayel that Jesus went through, the darkness that is descending upon him, the lonliness that Jesus was left with…
At the conclusion of this service, we would like to leave in silence - However, if you need some prayer, please stay, and we will pray together. However, we’ll do this in a somber reflective space.
Last night we focussed on Passover - The Last Supper with the disciples - Jesus would sit with his friends, with Judas, what where they thinking? Each one, including Peter would turn their back on Jesus.
I would like to invite you up, to tear some bread, and to take some juice as we partake in communion together.
Last night we also spoke about the Garden of Gethsemene - Jesus Sweating Blood of the stress, his sould sorrowful until Death - He would succeed where Adam failed.
Adam, through making the wrong choice would cause his death - Jesus, through making the right choice would cause his Torture, Flogging, Whipping, mocking and death.
Adam ,through making the wrong choice would cause seperation. Jesus, through making the right choice would cause fellowship, and communion with God. Jesus chose to drink the cup. for you and for me.
**Pray**
Jesus left the garden, to be met by Soldiers , being Led by Judas. Jesus, Arrested - and says:
Luke 22:53 ESV
When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
The Shadow of Denial — (Peter’s denial).Josh: Reading 5:John 18:15–18, 25–27
The Shadow of Accusation — (The trial before the High Priest).Mat: Reading 6:Matthew 26:59–67
Matthew 26:59–67 ESV
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’ ” And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,
Living Hope

O Praise the Name
2. The Three Bible Readings + Candle Blowings (3 Candles)
The Shadow of Rejection — (Pilate and the crowd choosing Barabbas).Mat: Reading 7:Matthew 27:11–26
Matthew 27:11–26 ESV
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
The Shadow of Mockery — (The soldiers, the crown of thorns, and the purple robe).Josh: Reading 8:Mark 15:16–20
The Shadow of Crucifixion — (The walk to Golgotha and the two thieves).Eloise: Reading 9:Luke 23:32–34, 39–43
Lamb
Agnes Dei | King of Kings
3. The Final Three Readings (3 Candles)
The Shadow of Abandonment — ("My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?").Eloise: Reading 10:Matthew 27:45–49
The Shadow of Completion — ("It is finished").Mat: Reading 11:John 19:28–30
John 19:28–30 ESV
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The Shadow of Death — (Jesus breathes His last).Josh: Reading 12:Luke 23:44–46
Devotion
What’s so good about Good Friday? Jesus made the Choice to set us free - The choice to Submit, the Choice to go to the cross. What does the Cross achieve that makes Good Friday so good?
It is the payment for our Sin
Matthew 20:28 ESV
even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Colossians 2:14 ESV
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Jesus’ Sacrifice bought us into a new Covenant with God | Covenant needs to be cut with Blood | A New Relationship | Not based on our Work, based Jesus finish work of the cross
Luke 22:20 ESV
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
The cross gave both Jews and gentiles opportunity to be Children of God.
John 11:51–52 ESV
He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
What else does the Cross Achieve?
It gave you a way, to go from Darkness to Light
Galatians 1:4 ESV
who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
Justification = Our Right standing with God
Romans 3:24 ESV
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Because of Jesus’ Bloodshet at Calvary = if you call Jesus Christ Lord and Saviour = When God looks down at you, sees the rightstanding of Jesus.
Because of Calvary = Your sins have been forgiven:
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
We have Peace with God = Once an Enemy, but now because of the Cross we have Peace and Spiritual Healing
Colossians 1:20 ESV
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
What’s so good about Good Friday? The Good News that we have been bought into his kingdom. That we have an opportunity to accept the deal, to know that the sacrafice is and always will be enough.
But before the blood, was God’s Wrath falling on Jesus, He felt seperated from the Father;
He would cry = Why have you forsaken me?
Before the cross, was the torture, prophesied centuries before the crucifixion.
Isaiah 53:4–5 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Jesus made a choice to go to the Cross = Before He would get there = Before He would be peirced in his hands and his feet, before I would feel forsaken from the father, before He would breath his last…He would carry his cross across market place - Before being too weak - Falling down, and having Simon of Cyrene carry it.
Before that (Grab the crown) - They would get a crown of thorns (This is terrible rendition really) - And they would force it down on his head | Put a robe on him, spit on him, punch him, and yell…all hail king of the jews.
This was while Jesus was weak,
John 19:1 ESV
Then Pilate took Jesus ad flogged him.
In Jewish Tradition = There was 39 Lashes before a crucifixion, but for Romans, there was no limit. Designed to Weaken, designed to rip flesh away.
Single Mum = I never truly understood the cost, but eventually I understood the why = Love. We may never understand the cost, but I pray God gives you a revelation of the why tonight. Love. That this revelation does something in us.
Just before He was Whipped | There Was a Choice | I want to Zoom in on this Choice tonight.
Jesus, bought before Pilate, in a courtyard in Trial. Many Injustices done | Charges changed | Illigal Proceedings.
Luke 23:13–16 ESV
Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. I will therefore punish and release him.”
Then it says;
Luke 23:18 ESV
But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—
Barabbas. Pilate, Govenar, STanding between two men - Jesus & Barabbas. The Crowd, with a choice, Religion with a Choice, Us tonight, with a choice.
At Passover Pilate can release one prisoner. Pilate wasn’t Jesus’ friend, but knew that this was injustice.
Who is Barabbas?
Bar-Abbas = Son of the Father | Jesus, the True Son of the Father.
Why was Barrabas on Trial?
Luke 23:19 ESV
a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.
Starting a fight with the romans = He was trying to overthrow Rome. A Rebel, a Murderer. Barrabas was what they wanted Jesus to be.
Luke 23:20–23 ESV
Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.” But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.
Religion, Pharisees, The human heart, wanted Barabaas.
Barabaas is a representation of our Flesh, of our state before the Holy Spirit, of our desires without the Love of God.
There are 2 Men on Trial and 2 Kingdoms on trial here. Barabbas representing the world - Violent, Angry, Eye for an Eye.
Jesus representing the Kingdom of God he came to usher in -Humble, Suffering, Offering Peace through Sacrificial Love.
The crowd has a choice between these two kingdoms - Reflecting the battle for every human heart.
We often reach for the sword of Barabbas - the sharp word, the grudge, the 'right' to be angry - because it feels like power. But the Cross shows us that true power is found in laying the sword down.
The Crowds cry; Crucify Him, Crucify Him - Exposes something in us - Our Impatience to God’s way, our Desire for Control.
Barrabas Loud, Defient, Full of Rage.
Jesus, when Questioned remained Silent, Meek, Full of Love.
Luke 23:24–25 ESV
So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
Barabas = I imagine, taken away, released from Prison, to be the first man to physically, and literally watch Jesus take his place.
Barabaas would watch Jesus get Whipped, watch the crown of Thorns be placed upon his head, watch him carry is cross, struggle, watch him be hurled into the sky, all while knowing…what was my cross.
This is the great substitution | The Son of God, given for the son of rebellion | Jesus dies so that Barabbas could live | Why is Good Friday so good? Because even though we chose barabaas, Even though we chose our own way, Even though we chose rebellion, Jesus Chose the Cross, and Jesus chose you, and the cross shows us that we are loved beyond measure, Forgiven without condition and bought into a family where the bible says;
Ephesians 1:5–7 ESV
he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
The crowds presented with a choice - You are presented with a choice | As we look at the cross tonight, as we remember the death of Jesus, Here is the choice:
Keep being led by the world, by our flesh, by our selfishness, pride, ego
or
Lay the Barabaas down in us | Put to death our flesh, put to death our way, our aspirations, our sinful view | Become a living sacrifice. Set our Mind on the Spirit which is Life and Peace.
God loves you so much, that He would send His only begotton son to the cross to die for your sins, to buy you freedom, to buy you redemption and to buy you LIFE.
May this be a lying down of our life, so that we too might have a resurrection.
Romans 6:4–6 ESV
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
