Hey y’all and welcome to Finding Treasure Podcast, where we seek to find the hidden Treasure that is Jesus Christ in every life season and circumstance. I’m your host Nicole and I’m joined by my husband Kanaan. Today we’re going to be opening the book of John and going on the journey with you to find the treasure that is Jesus in the scriptures.
A little about us: we are a young family in bivocational ministry and business. We’ve been in full-time ministry for the majority of our 20s, and are continuing now in our thirties as we raise a family of three beautiful children.
We believe there is a treasure worth giving everything for, and His name is Jesus. In Matthew chapter 13, we find Jesus himself sharing about the parable of the hidden treasure. He says these words in verse 44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Kanaan is going to share a bit about what this verse means, why it is the theme of our podcast, and how this invitation to find the hidden treasure of Jesus extends to us in our everyday life, but first I’m going to pray.

⏱️ CONTEXT
⏱️ CONTEXT
You only need 3 minutes:
John is one of Jesus’ closest friends—the ‘beloved disciple.
The brother of James - a “son of thunder”
Written around 85-95 AD, he is writing this at the end of his life as an old man, decades after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
He has seen the church grow, and also seen the church wrestle with many heresies of who Jesus is.
John 1:1-18 is the theological lens and foundation through which we look to read the rest of this gospel.
Before we read about a single thing that Jesus does, John begins by telling us who He is.
“And right from the start, John tells us exactly who Jesus is.”
“And right from the start, John tells us exactly who Jesus is.”
Flow:
— Jesus is the Word
— Jesus is God: “In the beginning…”
— Jesus is life
— Jesus is light
The working of the trinity in creation
One word is spoken into darkness and chaos and galaxies explode into existence
In the gospel of John we see Jesus again come into the darkness of our world and light explodes.
— Jesus is fully man: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
👉 End with:
“Have we actually seen Jesus as that treasure?”
⏱️ 22:00–28:00 — DISCOVERY QUESTIONS (CORE)
⏱️ 22:00–28:00 — DISCOVERY QUESTIONS (CORE)
This is the heart. Don’t rush it—but don’t ramble.
❓1. What does this teach us about God?
❓1. What does this teach us about God?
Hit 3 main anchors only (not everything):
1. Jesus is God
“The Word was God”
Not just a teacher
👉 Short push:
“A lot of people admire Jesus—but don’t follow Him as God.”
2. Jesus is Creator
“All things were made through Him”
👉 Simple:
“Jesus isn’t part of creation—He’s over it.”
3. Jesus is Light
Light shines in darkness
Darkness doesn’t overcome it
👉 Make it personal:
“No matter how dark things feel—light wins.”
❓2. What does this teach us about people?
❓2. What does this teach us about people?
Keep it honest and relatable:
People live in darkness
People, even when He’s right there miss Jesus
“His own did not receive Him”
👉 Then contrast:
“But to those who receive Him… He gives the right to become children of God”
❓3. If this is true, what should we do?
❓3. If this is true, what should we do?
Make it practical:
Don’t just admire Jesus → believe and receive Him
Walk in the light this week
Live like you’re actually a child of God
👉 Ask each other:
“What does that look like for you this week?”
⏱️ 28:00–30:00 — LOOK FORWARD (CLOSE STRONG)
⏱️ 28:00–30:00 — LOOK FORWARD (CLOSE STRONG)
Ask:
“What’s one way you’ll obey this this week?”
“Who can you share this with?”
👉 End with:
“Don’t just listen—try this with someone.”
