TODAY WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT JESUS’ FIRST MIRACLE AND LAST MIRACLE OF HIS TIME HERE ON EARTH. Jesus’ life is not a random thing that just happened to take place as he lived it. There has always been a plan. That’s why we pray,” Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. There are many prophecies that predict Jesus coming and his life. Someone said the old testament is Jesus concealed and the new testiment is Jesus revealed. There is historic proof
Psalm 22
Psalm 22:16–18 (NASB95)
16For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 
17I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 
18They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.
Isaiah 53:11–12 (NASB95)
11He will bear their iniquities. 
12Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
He didn’t fight the good fight and lose.
and then the resurrection saved Him! no!
Everything that happens in the world has been directed by God,
from creation to when Jesus comes back
This includes Jesus’ life, crucifiction and resurrection
So let’s look at jesus’ life a bit, to put His death and resurrection in perspective
John 2:1–25 (NKJV)
1] On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 
Jewish wedding celebrations lasted for one week,
relatives and friends would stay in the home of the bride and groom—
sort of a honeymoon/family reunion/bachelor party/wedding shower all rolled into one!
the bride would be tucked away in a secluded part of the house
At the end of the week, she would emerge with great fanfare and celebration.
2] Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 
A wedding ceremony itself has a big effect . A commitment made in a public ceremony is harder to break when the going gets tough.
The families are involved as well, and that adds to to the weight of the commitment to marriage and family.
many say, “What’s the big deal? Why can’t we just make a private commitment In this situation?
it is too easy to forget or ignore the weight of the commitment
Here in John 2, right off the bat, Jesus honored and elevated the institution of marriage.
3And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
Mary was concerned about the wine situation - this shows us that she was somehow responsible for the feast.
Historic experts think she was probably realated to the bride or groom
She was doing her best to take care of things.
Let’s spend a minute reflecting on Mary’s relationship to the family and community
at fourteen or fifteen , Mary had become miraculously pregnant by the Spirit of God. highly favored by God and blessed among women.
But let’s think for a minute about the thirty years Mary had to live with the reputation the people put on her.
But she also must have become the subject of whispers, raised eyebrows and comments.
How do I know this? well … let the Word of God speak!
the Pharisees smugly declared to Jesus,(John 8:41) “We be not born of fornication” their implication being that He had been.
4] Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 
Jesus refers to His mother with a term of respect, but He does not call her “mother.”
Jesus wanted to emphasize that there was a different relationship with her now.
You see we are all brothers and sisters in faith, regardless of our earthly relationship status. More on that later …….
5]His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 
Mary’s last recorded words in Scripture, we see her directing the servants to her Son rather than acting as a mediator or liaison for Him.
Those who want to go through Mary to have their prayers heard or to gain influence in heaven have not studied carefully the relationship between Jesus and His mother.
She wasn’t the boss or his equal. Oh, He loved her and cared for her even when He was on the Cross.
But He was neither influenced by her nor did He take orders from her. When it was told Him that His mother wanted to see Him, Jesus said,
(see Luke 8:21)“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers? They who hear and heed the Word of God are My mother and My brothers” .
Later, in Acts 1, we see Mary with the other disciples praying in the Upper Room. She’s not leading the meeting. She’s not in a place of honor or prominence. She’s just one of them.
only one Mediator between God and man—not Mary, but Jesus (see 1 Timothy 2:5).
6Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 
7Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 
Fill the waterpots with water:
The servants under the direction of Jesus were in a unique place of blessing for this miracle.
Jesus wanted the cooperation of men in this miracle. He could have filled the pots Himself, or just as easily created the liquid in the pots. But He knew that if the servants shared in the work, then they also shared in the blessing.
i. The servants did not do the miracle.
Their efforts alone were completely insufficient.
But because of their obedience to Jesus, they shared in the joy of the miracle.
8And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 
d. Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast:
This took faith on behalf of the servants.
Imagine how angry the master of the feast would be if they brought him water to taste!
Yet in faith, they obeyed the word of Jesus.
9When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 
10And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” 
You have kept the good wine until now!
When Jesus made wine, it was good wine.
not high alcohol content, but that it was well-made wine.
11This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 
the sign at the Canna wedding: was to show His glory
this miracle was a divine manifistation or revealing ofJesus’ hidden divine attributes, showing Him as the Son of God not merely a prophet
12After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days. 
Here is Mary still at her Son’s side.
The correction earlier in the chapter did not deter her from following Him.
Perhaps it brought them even closer.
Do not despise the correction of the Lord, for it is meant to draw you nearer to His side.
13Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 
The Passover of the Jews was at hand:
Jerusalem was crowded with thousands coming at Passover.
The temple mount would be particularly crowded,
Jesus saw many doing business in the outer courts of the temple.
14And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 
15When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 
When He had made a whip of cords:
He did not do it in a flash of anger.
He carefully took the time to make a whip of cords,
and thought carefully about what He would do.
John (1. Jesus Drives out the Moneychangers and Sellers of Expensive “Approved” Sacrificial Animals (13–17)) He drove them all out … poured out the changers’ money and overturned tables:
Why did this offend Jesus so much?
this was the world’s system creeping in to the temple worship and it short circuited God’s intentions.
The outer courts of the temple were the only place where Gentiles could come and worship.
This area (the court of the Gentiles) was made into a den of theives
16And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 
17Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” 
One of the things in the dicipleship arena is, that these money changers and merchants blocked believers who wanted to come into worship but instead they see buying and selling that wasn’t entirely upright! they would leave and not come back. they would talk about hypocracy and other negative things about the temple worship .
18So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?
This wasn’t necessarily a bad question.
Anyone who drove out the merchants from the temple courts claimed the authority to do it.
The Jews wanted to know if Jesus really had this authority.
The problem is that they demanded a sign from Jesus to prove it.
 19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 
Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up:
Jesus speaks here of the temple of His body.
He probably even gestured to Himself as He said this.
Jesus knew these religious leaders would attempt to destroy His body,
but He also knew that they would not succeed.
20Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 
21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 
22Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. 
23Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 
24But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 
Many believed in His name when they saw the signs:
Jesus knew that this was thin, superficial belief.
It was based on the miracles he could do - to satisfy their carnal mind.
Knowing this, Jesus did not commit Himself to them or believe them
25and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
He knew what was in man:
Yet Jesus still loved the multitudes, though he would not commit (or entrust) Himself to them.
We as well, can love people without entrusting ourselves to them.
Even though God knows exactly what is in us, He still loves us powerfully.
Take home points to reflect on:
There is a high value on marraige: even the ceremony itself has value because the family is involved designed to support the couple.
like the servants in the wedding feast, we can only minister under the direction of Jesus, we are powerless on our own.
like the moneychangers at the temple, when we do things out of selfish motives(greed in this case) we can hurt people - [——— without even realizing. our bad testimony can stumble others.
Jesus predicted His death and resurrection near the start of His public ministry. He used rebuilding temple example. the temple in the Greek here, is [naos] which refers to the Holy of Holies.
application point John began this chapter with a miracle of conversion (changing water into wine).
Then he shows Jesus with a work of cleansing (the cleansing of the temple).
This is always how Jesus works in His people: this is how He works with each of us.
1] conversion,
2] then cleansing. [discipleship, or sanctification]
we need the power of the resurrection to be able to be cleansed and changed! That’s right, there’s power from heaven available to us to live for Jesus.

11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

19and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 
20which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,Ephesians 1:21–23 (NASB95)
21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 
22And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 
23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
