Romans 16 looks like a list of names we might skip—but it’s actually a roll call of people who might have been rejected by society, yet were fully accepted, honored, and used by God
That’s why this quote fits Romans 16 so well…
Christian author, C.S. Lewis,
“The great thing is to be found at one’s post as a child of God, living each day as though it were our last, but planning as though our world might last a hundred years”
The church has always been intended to be a complete mix of backgrounds- Ethnic and Cultural.
Our differences in personality and experiences is what serves to unite us- Not divide us.
Our community within the church should always serve as an open door to welcoming the community at large to join in.
Paul’s closing can assist Followers of Christ in looking beyond feelings of rejection or being marginalized by society.
We can be encouraged by embracing our new identity in Christ.
And recognizing the value of the multi-faceted benefits available inside the Church.
Finally-
In Christ, we are completely transformed in His image.
Rejection being replaced with Joyful acceptance
Placing our value- Not in anything man can provide
But within the Security only God can provide.
It was once said that it is amazing what could be accomplished for God, if no one worried about who got the credit.
It is a sad commentary on basic human instincts
So lets begin as Romans 16 shows that in Christ, people the world overlooks—or even rejects—are fully seen, valued, and used by God.
1- Intentional in Purpose
1- Intentional in Purpose
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a deacon in the church in Cenchrea.
Welcome her in the Lord as one who is worthy of honor among God’s people.
Help her in whatever she needs, for she has been helpful to many, and especially to me.
Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in the ministry of Christ Jesus.
In fact, they once risked their lives for me. I am thankful to them, and so are all the Gentile churches.
Also give my greetings to the church that meets in their home. Greet my dear friend Epenetus.
He was the first person from the province of Asia to become a follower of Christ.
In these first verses, we see that acceptance and honor in God’s church are based on faithfulness, not status or gender
Phoebe- trusted, honored, possibly marginalized by culture
A Deacon in her local church
Recognized by Paul as one worthy of honor
Was helpful to Paul and many others in the local church.
Rejected by culture, accepted and honored in Christ.
Mentioned without a male associate, her freedom to travel suggests Phoebe was single or a widow, and her independent journey to Rome provides evidence that women served the church in itinerant capacities.
Paul’s commendation likely meant he entrusted her with delivering his letter, a role that might have included reading it aloud, interpreting it as necessary, answering questions, and bringing a response back to Paul.
The structured opening of Romans 16 suggests it may have served as a letter of commendation for her as she traveled.
AQUILA AND PRISCILLA- A Married couple who came from Italy to Corinth after the emperor Claudius ordered Jews expelled from Rome, became Christians, and assisted Paul in his ministry.
They were tentmakers by trade, They came into contact with Paul, who was a tentmaker, in Corinth (Acts 18:2).
Priscilla and Aquila were a couple who accomplished effective ministry behind the scenes.
Their tools were hospitality, friendship, and person-to-person teaching.
While not public speakers, they were faithful with home and work.
Priscilla and Aquila give us a challenging model of what a couple can do together in the service of Christ.
How often do we see our families and homes as gifts through which God can accomplish his work?
How does God want to use your home and family to serve him?
The stories of Phoebe, Priscilla and Aquila should encourage us all.
So whether you feel hidden like a behind-the-scenes helper, or ‘just’ a mom or dad, or the quiet first believer in your family, God sees and honors that faithfulness
We are not to see our worthiness as the world sees or defines it.
We are complete in Christ, based first on Salvation, then on our faithfulness in whatever God puts in front of us to do.
Which is how Epenetus makes the list-
His significance wasn’t title, but that he was the ‘first convert’—that’s legacy.
And Paul counted him as a friend- That’s priceless.
These dear friends and co-workers of Paul are perfect examples of our next section
2- Unique and United
2- Unique and United
Give my greetings to Mary, who has worked so hard for your benefit. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews, who were in prison with me.
They are highly respected among the apostles and became followers of Christ before I did.
Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord.
Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys.
Greet Apelles, a good man whom Christ approves.
And give my greetings to the believers from the household of Aristobulus. Greet Herodion, my fellow Jew.
Greet the Lord’s people from the household of Narcissus.
Give my greetings to Tryphena and Tryphosa, the Lord’s workers, and to dear Persis, who has worked so hard for the Lord.
This list, often ignored in most teaching today-
This diverse list shows that the church is both unique and united:
Different stories, same Savior;
Different backgrounds, same mission
It’s foundation crossed-
Cultural and Societal boundaries
Socio-Economical lines
Intellectual and Academic institutions.
The list of 26 names in total represent-
Romans, Greeks, Jews and Gentiles
Men and Women
Prominent, influential Citizens
And prisoners- Rejected by empire, accepted as co-workers
All have various things in common and all were commended personally by Paul
Hard workers and fellow workers
Imprisoned and in chains with Paul
Andronicus and Junia were believers before Paul was
Having seen the risen Christ, they were Apostles (Sent ones) in their missionary work.
They would have been Christians for about 25 years at this point
Ampliatus- Possibly of Caesar’s imperial household (Phil 4:22)
Others, “Approved in Christ”
Some who were martyred for their faith, with their property and heirs being made property of the Roman Empire.
Several men and women, commended for their hard in service to the Lord
Different roles, same acceptance in Christ.
Different histories, same calling to serve
Showing us that past difficulties or backgrounds are of little concern to God in His plan and purpose.
We would do well to not let our own perceived limitations or faults
Sideline us from being used by God.
There is someone we will encounter that needs to hear your story
We are all part of the churches mission
And it is God’s grace and mercy that unites us as one in Him.
The list continues in-
3- Connected Through Christ
3- Connected Through Christ
Greet Rufus, whom the Lord picked out to be his very own; and also his dear mother, who has been a mother to me.
Give my greetings to Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers and sisters who meet with them.
Give my greetings to Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and to Olympas and all the believers who meet with them.
Greet each other with a sacred kiss.
All the churches of Christ send you their greetings.
What better way to demonstrate the importance of unity in the community-
The personal connections with Christ leads to a stronger bond with all believers.
The early churches ability to serve the needs of others above themselves is the model for us today
This group in Rome is a cross-section of Roman culture—
And just like our churches today, they had the potential to be a complete disaster or a resounding success,
Depending on whether they found unity in their diversity.
When Christ becomes our main connection, people who might reject each other in the world actually accept each other in the church
4- Sealed in the Truth
4- Sealed in the Truth
And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters.
Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught.
Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests.
By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.
But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord.
This makes me very happy.
I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of any wrong. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
The false teachers were motivated by their own interests rather than Christ’s. They embroiled the church in endless and irrelevant questions and controversies, taking precious time away from the study of the truth.
Today we could also enter into worthless and irrelevant discussions, but such disputes quickly crowd out the life-changing message of Christ. We must stay away from religious speculation and pointless theological arguments.
Divisive and speculative teaching doesn’t just waste time; it often leads to people feeling pushed out or rejected.
Paul wants a church where the gospel is clear, and people are welcomed, not confused and divided.
For example, arguing endlessly about minor issues while ignoring the clear commands to love, serve, and share Christ.
And they take up time we should use to share the gospel with others.
We have talked, at length, about focusing on right priorities already in this letter.
There are “Essentials of the Faith” that cannot be Compromised.
The Non-Essentials are open for discussion
As long as we can “agree to disagree” if needed.
We should avoid anything that keeps us from doing God’s work.
Paul makes one final appeal to be aware of those causing division in the church.
Using phrases like-
“Watch out” and “Stay Away”
Paul puts the responsibility squarely on the Believers to police their own.
Not only their own group of believers but also themselves.
We are to be pro-active in ensuring the Gospel remains pure and uncompromised-
By salacious or mindless discussions.
Division makes people feel rejected; pure gospel preserves true acceptance.
Our best defense against such things is to-
“Be wise in doing right” and to “Stay innocent of any wrong”
Being obedient to the Lord, pleased Paul, greatly
Imagine how it must make our Lord and Saviour feel, today as we follow in their footsteps!
And now the final conclusion:
5- Foundation of Faith- Grounded in Grace
5- Foundation of Faith- Grounded in Grace
Timothy, my fellow worker, sends you his greetings, as do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my fellow Jews.
I, Tertius, the one writing this letter for Paul, send my greetings, too, as one of the Lord’s followers.
Gaius says hello to you. He is my host and also serves as host to the whole church.
Erastus, the city treasurer, sends you his greetings, and so does our brother Quartus.
Now all glory to God, who is able to make you strong, just as my Good News says.
This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time.
But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made known to all Gentiles everywhere, so that they too might believe and obey him.
All glory to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, forever. Amen.
Throughout this final section of the letter, Paul continues to commend by name, those that have been helpful to him in his ministry.
To include the scribe that wrote the words as Paul dictated them to him.
Imagine how he felt writing such glowing praise- About himself.
To summarize William Tyndale, on his conclusion to the entire letter-
First, find yourself steadfastly in the Law of God
Second, Keep your eyes on Christ.
Always seeing the great mercy of our Heavenly Father.
Third, Keep in focus that the Sacrifice of Jesus was not so we could return to our old life, as the pig returns to the filth of the sty.
But let the new creation live after the Will of God and not of the world.
And finally- Be diligent in your faith and never forget the great Grace and Mercy God has bestowed on us.
That’s how rejected people become rooted, accepted, and fruitful in Christ.
Although Paul wrote this letter to a group of people he had yet to meet,
We can easily count ourselves in that same group
Everything the Apostle wrote them- Applies equally well now.
Yes, many churches struggle with disunity and lack of impact—
But Romans 16 shows what’s possible when ordinary believers live out unity, service, and godly love.”
There is still work to be done.
Our acceptance rests on God’s plan and grace, not human approval.
Applying Paul’s approach on unity, service and Godly love can only show a clear impact of positive effort
That is bound to bring Glory to God.
