As we continue to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus this morning. I’d like to look closer at the person that Anna portrayed for us this morning. Mary magdalene. The first person that Jesus appeared to.
Who was she?
Luke 8:1–2 ESV
Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Mary was a woman that Jesus had saved from unimaginable horrors. she had followed him from that moment forward. She even had the courage to do what only one disciple did. She was present to watch Jesus be crucified. She watched the person who saved her life lose his life. The person who she knew was the son of God, who she loved more than anyone. She was there to watch him die.
Think about the thoughts that had to be going through her head as she watched the source of all her hope die.
She had to be worried that with Jesus gone would the demons come back. imagine the anxiety that would well up inside of her as friday turned to saturday, and the turned to Sunday morning.
and now as we are about to read she shows up at the tomb expecting to see the body of Jesus one more time, and show him a final honor by preparing his body. But when she gets there the body is gone and she thinks it has been stolen. she is at an all time low. But then something incredible happens
John 20:11–16 CSB
But Mary stood outside the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. She saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’s body had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus. “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?” Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”
Mary hears the voice of Jesus behind her she doesn’t recognize it. Maybe its because Jesus used the general term woman to call out to her. it wasn’t the personal way Jesus had normally called out to her.
But as soon as Jesus says her name she realizes who it is. She realizes that he is alive and she realizes that all her hope has been restored.
Jesus called out to Mary personally. He knew her name.
I think someone needs this reminder to start their Easter today. Jesus’ call to you is a personal one. Jesus knows your name. and so much more than that. Jesus knows every single thing about you. He knows everything you’ve done. He knows every single thought you have ever had. and he still is calling out to you by name this morning.
He knew all that and he still chose to go to the cross for you.
Not only does he know everything you ever did before you made the choice to follow him. Jesus knows every single time you would let him down. Every time you would sin, everytime you would say no to him after you made the choice to follow him.
And he still chose to go to the cross for you. Not just for a general we or a general us. He chose to go to the cross for you personally. and now that he has risen he calls you personally to recieve salvation and have a personal relationship with him.
Some of you may have come in here like Mary entered the tomb this morning. uncertain, full of anxiety about what the future holds. devistated because you have watched the things that you have put your hope in die one after another.
If that’s you this morning I want you to know Jesus sees you, He knows your name, He chose the cross for you. and now hes calling you out. He’s calling you by name out of the darkness that you’ve been living in and inviting you to place your hope in him. Because a hope placed in Jesus will never die because he will never die.
You can walk out of here today with the same joy, the same hope that Mary walked out of the tomb with.
Don’t choose to live in darkness when Jesus is calling you into the light.
He’s calling you to step out of your tomb today, and live because he lives.
True eternal life is offered to you today. even though you don’t deserve it. all you have to do is accept it by surrendering the life that he has given you Jesus.
Listen to the call this morning and answer it with surrender.
If you have already done that this morning during this song and through the rest of the day I challenge you to do what Mary did. She didn’t stay camped out in the empty tomb verse 18 tells us she left and told everyone that she had seen the Lord. Proclaim with your life and with your words that you have seen the Lord, and what he as done for you. to bring him more glory to point everyone who interacts with you to him.
