Brief Synopsis
The author of Hebrews wanted to discuss deeper doctrinal truths with the Jewish Christians. Though the author points out seven specific warnings we are only going to discuss three. He recognized that they had become dull of hearing and still needed to be taught elementary principles about God. Though by this time they should have been capable of teaching others, they were like Christian infants still in need of milk. Three things kept them from being able to press onto maturity. First, was a general lack of growth. Secondly, this lack of growth represented itself through a lack of discernment to understand good from evil. Third, was a lack of doctrinal understanding that Jesus was and is the supreme high priest (He’s the better thing). They were “churched” their whole lives and had little to show for it in terms of spiritual maturity. To put it simply, they had become pew potatoes and adopted a “good enough” attitude towards their faith.
