The Institution of the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist)
The Lord passes around the bread after breaking it and giving thanks.
This was to symbolize His body which would be broken for the sins of the world.
He says “This is My body given for you.”
He then offers a cup and passes it around
This was to symbolize His blood which would be shed.
He said, this is “the new covenant in My blood, poured out for you.”
The Commandment to Remember
After doing this He commands His followers to partake in this meal to remember His sacrifice.
Not to allow themselves to forget but also to honor what He has done for them.
The sacrifice of Christ could never be forgotten by those who have experienced the life changing power He made available to us by His sacrifice.
To partake in this ceremony is a Christians great honor and privilege.
It has been and remains to this day a central act of worship for all of those who love Christ.
The Betrayal Foretold
During the meal Jesus reveals that one of His followers would betray Him.
Mark 14:18–19 “And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me—the one who is eating with Me.” They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?””
A total shock to them all, except of course the one (Judas) who had allowed himself to be influenced by the devil.
To the point that the devil had total access to him and entered into him.
A Denial Foretold
The confident Peter determined never to abandon his Lord is made aware of the inner fear that will cause him to deny his Lord, not once, not twice but three times.
The Servant’s Heart
The Washing of Their Feet
John 13:5 “Then He poured water into the washbasin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel which He had tied around Himself.”
Jesus shows such humility and points to the importance of serving one another.
Reminding us never to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to, that we would not allow ourselves to serve one another.
If the Christ is willing to humble Himself and serve, how much more His followers.
Done as an example for us to follow
The New Commandment
Love one another as He has loved them.
To love like Christ.
To show grace, compassion, mercy, patience and so much more, like Christ did.
John 13:34–35 ““A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.””
This He explicitly introduces as a commandment, not a suggestion.
Maundy comes from the Latin word “Mandatum” (Commandment)
The commandment to love one another and remember the Lord’s sacrifice.
The Garden of Gethsemane
After the supper, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane
There He prays and seeks comfort from His Father in heaven.
Let this be an example to us when we feel our weakest.
Knowing the pain and the sorrow that awaited Him.
Luke 22:42 “saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me, yet not My will, but Yours be done.””
He experiences deep anguish before His arrest
He closest friends kept falling asleep when He asked them to be in prayer.
