What do I believe God wants us to know? Jesus died for our sins (paid for them) , and rose to new life (death has been defeated)
Why? It is the hope we long for and not having it is our biggest fear
What do I believe God wants us to do? Believe, follow, and share
Why? It brings reconciliation and new life
ME/WE
2000 years ago on a day we call GOOD FRIDAY, did not like anything GOOD at all on the ORINGAL GOOD FRIDAY appeared to be the DARKEST DAY IN HUMAN HISTORY!
To the point if we would have said today is GOOD FRIDAY…THEY WOULD HAVE SAID are you out of your mind
There is nothing GOOD ABOUT GOOD FRIDAY
CALL it dark FRIDAY, NIGHTMARE FRIDAY, BAD FRIDAY
DO YOU REALIZE WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
Are you traveling in from Galilee?
Have you not heard what happened?
Let’s put ourselves in the story
There was this man name JESUS who, healed the sick, raised the dead, caused the blind to see, taught as one with authroity.
Then Jesus comes marching into Jerusalem, we are all cheering him on, laying down clocks and raising palm branches, proclaiming he was KING, He was the MESSIAH
John 12:13 ESV
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
AND HOPE WAS HIGH FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS
AND DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM? YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE IT
HIS FRIEND, JUDAS, ON THURSDAY SOLD HIM OUT TO the RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES.
DO YOU HOW MUCH HE SOLD JESUS OUT FOR?
30 shekels of silver….THE PRICE of a SLAVE
AND THEN IT GETS WORSE
ON THE DAY WE INSPECT LAMBS TO BE LAMB WITHOU BLEMISH, NO DEFECTS, SO IT CAN BE SACRIFICED FOR OUR SINS IS THE SAME NIGHT JESUS IS GOING TO INSPECTED AT TR
John 18:12–14 ESV
So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.
Then right from they send Jesus right to trial. Where he faces 6 trials in a matter of 7 hours. 3 religious trials (happen in the wee hours of the morning), 3 secular trials (that happen in the early morning).
Annas (2am) the former high priest and hears the case and declares Jesus guilty and sends him to the current high priest.
Caiaphas (the current high priest)....Sanhedrin (the Jewish ruling authorities
- people bring all these false charges against him and Jesus said nothing
- until Caiaphas says, The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
Matthew 26:63–64 ESV
But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Matthew 26:65–66 ESV
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”
Here’s the crux of the matter for the matter for religious authority, they had no legal authority to do anything legally, they could do things religiously.
They wanted Jesus eradicated…they knew Jesus would still be a threat to them if He was still around…he needed to be dealt with and gone so they send them to the secular authorities in the early morning.
4. Pilate the governor of Judaea and he hears Jesus case and finds no legal guilt, but it is just a religious squabble and he hears Jesus is from Galilee and that is Herod’s jurisdiction and Herod residence is in Jerusalem just a short walk from where they were with Pilate
Show Herod’s place
5. Herod…Herod was excited to meet Jesus because he thought Jesus would do a sign for Him....finally Jesus is hereBUT Herod found no guilt and send him back to Pilate.
6. Pilate again hear’s Jesus testimony where the only response He gives is that He is King of the Jews…which for Pilate is not a charge worthy of anything that he could do BUT HE WANTED to appease the crowd under political pressure. SO he flogged and beat Jesus and Jesus will stop and the people will be appeased
This was gruesome.
They would tie the person up either put hands over their head or tie them around a rock and beat them with these whips that would have bone and metal that would latch unto your skin and rip it off some historians have it recorded that during some of these floggings you could see people’s organs.
SHOW PICTURE OF PRISON AND WHIPPING
Isaiah 52:14 ESV
As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
END OF BAD PART OF THE STORY….
NO!
BUT THE BEATING WAS NOT ENOUGH
The people said this is not enough....We are invoking the custom where a prison was released ever year during Passover....
Let’s read
Matthew 27:15–23 ESV
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
CRUCIFY THIS INNOCENT MAN??
This innocent man
Crucification is for murders and insurrectionists…crucification was for the worst of the worst…and it also sent a message this will happen to you too if you do the same thing....
Do you know what fear this invoked in Jesus’ disciples and followers?
The ones who followed Him, the ones who were professing Jesus is the one
Their greatest HOPE of Jesus being the deliver, THE MESSIAH, THE KING
They are seeing those who followed Jesus could also be crucified too.
We see Peter one of Jesus’ closest disciples filled with fear when people start to ask “Aren’t you one of Jesus’ disciples too???”
What Peter is probably thinking is crucification, crucification, crucification.
Peter says “I don’t know the man!” 3 times
ALL HOPE is GONE...
Not only is all hope Gone
Their greatest nightmare was happening…they are thinking crucification, crucification
Luke 24:21 ESV
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
IMAGINE BEING THERE
HOW WOULD YOU HAVE FELT IF YOU WERE ONE OF JESUS’ DISCIPLES????
FEAR
I am leaving here
BUT WHAT THEY DIDN’T RELIZE AT THE TIME IS JESUS IS ENDING THEIR and OUR GREATEST NIGHTMARE..
What is our greatest nightmare SIN, DEATH, and SHAME
And of the cross Jesus pays for our sins
Isaiah 59:2 ESV
but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 1:29 ESV
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
You could be as Good as Mother Tersea and you are not making payment for you sins by your works or getting right with God.
Here’s the GOOD NEWS
Jesus is going to pay for our sins
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Jesus pays for our sins that for those who believe in Jesus have eternal
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The great exchange
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
AND THIS NEW LIFE IS A WHOLE NEW LIFE
The new life is a new life…you are a new creation
Sinner
to saint
JESUS TURNED OUR NIGHTMARE into GOOD FRIDAY
We see after he dies on the cross the veil to the holy of holies is torn
Tears the veil
SHOW PICTURE OF VEIL
The veil was the door 60’ x 30 an hand deep, torn from top to bottom. 300 priest took to hang it. that was the entrance to the Holy of Holies (were God resided) that only the high priest could enter once a year, but Jesus tears the veil as a symbolic action that signifies He is the great high priest and sacrificial lamb that makes payment for our sin that all who believe in Jesus can enter to meet with God.
BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER MY FRIEND
That’s Friday…Sunday is coming
What about Saturday???
What does Jesus do on silent Saturday? He’s not silent
Jesus decedents into hades, scheol, not hell
What does Jesus do there?
Two Things
1 Peter 3:19 ESV
in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,
What did he proclaim to the fallen angels?
Death has been defeated
Jesus was mocking them
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 ESV
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:15 ESV
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Then he set free the righteous that were in scheol/hades
Ephesians 4:8–10 ESV
Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
AND IT DOES NOT END THERE.........that’s Friday and Satuday but Sunday is coming.....what happens on Sunday? he ends the other part…eternal death and damnation.
days later Jesus defeats death
Luke 24:1–8 ESV
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words,
The angels were saying this was all apart of the plan....He was going the cross on Good Friday to defeat SIN and on Sunday morning His raised to life to defeat DEATH.
The grave could not Hold Jesus
DEATH COULD NOT HOLD JESUS DOWN!!!!
AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE BELEVERS IN JESUS DEATH CANNOT HOLD THOSE WHO BELIEVE
John 11:25 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
Believers never die
THIS IS TRULY AMAZING
and this amazing reality of death and resurrection of Jesus
SINS paid for
Death defeated
New life and New identity is available to everyone who believes in Jesus
So what do we do with this?
1. Come to Jesus (for non-believers)
“Stop trying to pay for what Jesus already paid for.”
Come to Jesus. Stop trying to pay for what Jesus already paid for.
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
2. For those are in Christ we must preach the Gospel
My sins are paid for
I have been set free. I am not captive
I no longer die
I am child of God. A saint
3. Share the Gospel…the God news
you have been set free, redeemed, and made alive
The death and resurrection of Jesus means: the greatest moment in all of history
Darkness does not win. Sin does not win. Death is defeated.
Because of price Jesus paid and the victory He won
And if you are in Him— you are victor too!

He is risen
