The Garden
The Garden
The story of our salvation begins in a Garden- but not this Garden.
The story of our salvation begins with the Garden of Eden.
The sin- taking the apple
Genesis 3:6–7 “So when the woman saw that the in/ctree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”
The Promise
Genesis 3:14–15 “The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.””
It is because of what happened in the Garden of Eden that Jesus walks out of the empty Garden Tomb
Today we are going to look at 5 things that the Garden Tomb set right that were broken in the Garden of Eden.
Sin Enters/Sin is defeated
Sin Enters/Sin is defeated
In Eden sin entered the word
What was the sin? Disobedience
Even though God had given them everything they needed Adam and Eve still stepped outside his best for them.
Romans 5:13–14 “for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”
You have a sin problem- not just because of what you do but also because of who you are- a child of Adam
At the Tomb sin was defeated
What happened? Jesus defeats sin
Romans 5:15–19 “But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
You can’t out-sin the cross, but you can ignore it
Curse Enters/Curse Broken
Curse Enters/Curse Broken
Because of the sin of Eden there are 6 curses pronounced
The Serpent (Satan) – Defeat is Promised
Cursed to crawl and eat dust (symbol of humiliation)
Ongoing conflict with humanity
His defeat is guaranteed (protoevangelium)
The Woman – Pain and Strain
Increased pain in childbirth
Distortion in relationships (“your desire will be for your husband…”
Tension, struggle, and broken harmony in the home
The Man – Toil and Frustration
The ground is cursed
Work becomes painful, exhausting, and frustrating
Thorns and thistles—effort without guaranteed reward
Life marked by sweat and struggle
Creation – Broken and Resistant
Ground cursed because of sin
Nature no longer cooperates easily
Disorder, decay, and hardship enter the world
Death – The Ultimate Curse
“For dust you are and to dust you will return” (v.19)
Physical death enters
Spiritual separation from God begins immediately
Separation from God – Lost Access
Expelled from the Garden
Humanity cut off from direct fellowship with God
Jesus Brakes every curse!
Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
Sin thought it won because like us Jesus died but when he rose from the dead it defeated the curses of sin
The cross is where sin did its worst—and Jesus did His best.”
Tree Brings Death/Tree Brings Life
Tree Brings Death/Tree Brings Life
It was the fruit of the tree in the garden that brought sin into the world
Two sticks tied together- there was moment when humanity chose sin over God
There was a moment when Jesus chose us over himself
“One tree brought death because we reached for it. One tree brought life because Jesus refused to come down from it
Humanity Hides/Humanity Brought Near
Humanity Hides/Humanity Brought Near
Adam hides from God in shame for what he has done
Our natural response to sin is to hide- from God, from others, from ourselves
Genesis 3:8–10 “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.””
Jesus’ Resurrection provides us the path to draw near to God again!
Ephesians 2:14–18 “For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.”
Where sin brought separation, Jesus brought access.
Ultimately Sin in the Garden brought Death/ but the empty Garden Tomb brings life!
