My safe keeping
Jesus’ final words on the cross—“Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit”—mark the moment of his death (Luke 23:46), and they carry profound theological significance across Luke’s gospel.
These words derive from Psalm 3 d
1:5, the prayer of a righteous sufferer who expresses trust that his fate rests in God’s hands1. Jesus embodied the pattern of righteous suffering and, as he faced death, expressed his trust that God would care for him1. This represents a striking contrast to his earlier cry of abandonment; after sensing divine abandonment, Jesus utters a stunning cry of trust2.
Jesus cries out, and then Jesus addresses God with his final prayer—presenting an image of Jesus’ communion with the Father at the last moment before his death4. Both Luke’s Jesus and Stephen commit their spirits before dying4, establishing a parallel that highlights the faithful death of the righteous.
Jesus’ prayer demonstrates his unity with his Father’s will to save humankind, revealing that salvation comes through trusting that God remains united with his rejected creation even in its darkest hours5.
I trust inn God the only one
Jesus shows us that trusting in God is the only way out
2 Timothy 1:12 “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”
Paul’s understanding of mystical union with Christ—involving trust, identification with him, living under his protection and authority, and recognizing his presence within believers.2
Given that Paul faced his own death, this addition of mercy reassured Timothy of God’s constant protection and guidance during uncertain times.
We don’t believe
we should trust God like this but if we don’t how are we going to make
think about Daniel in the Den of loins
think about the Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace
think about Paul bein shipwreck
did God bring them out!
