I. INTRODUCTION — THE SILENCE OF THE GOSPELS

This morning we are going to do something a little different.
We are going to take the time to look at a detailed, practical, and physical overview of exactly what Jesus went through on the cross.
Now Scripture gives us a fair amount of detail when it comes to the death of Christ as an event, but we don’t get a ton of information on the crucifixion itself.
“The reason is simple—
Crucifixion was so common in that world… it didn’t need explaining.
They already knew what that meant.
But we don’t.
So tonight, we’re going to slow that moment down— and look at what actually happened to the body of Jesus Christ.

II. GETHSEMANE — PRE-CRUCIFIXION TRAUMA

📖 Luke 22:44

Luke 22:44 NKJV
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
“Before the arrest… before the scourging… before the cross…
Jesus is in Gethsemane.
And Luke records:
‘His sweat became like great drops of blood.’
This is a real medical condition—hematohidrosis.
SLIDE - Pictures of Hematohidrosis
Under extreme stress, capillaries rupture into sweat glands, and blood mixes with sweat.”
“This tells us:
This is not normal emotional strain.
This is the human body under such extreme trauma that it very rarely ever happens
And medically, this also means—
the skin becomes hypersensitive.
So everything that follows… is felt more intensely.”
Physical Comparison = really bad sunburn
So at this point Jesus has not even been touched yet.
But he is already feeling the effects of what was to come, and this would make everything else feel exceedingly worse

III. THE SCOURGING — SYSTEMATIC DESTRUCTION

📖 Matthew 27:26

Matthew 27:26 NKJV
Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
“Pilate orders Jesus to be scourged.
The Romans would have used a flagrum—
SLIDE - Picture of Flagrum
Leather strands with bone and metal embedded in the ends.”
“When it strikes:
It wraps around the body… embeds into the flesh… and when pulled back… it tears it open.”
“The progression is brutal:
Skin is opened
Tissue is exposed
Muscle is torn
Arterial bleeding begins”
“Historical descriptions say:
‘The skin of the back hung in long ribbons… and the body became an unrecognizable mass of torn tissue.’”
“At this point, Jesus is entering hypovolemic shock:
Severe blood loss
Falling blood pressure
Weakening circulation
Beginning organ stress”
“This is not punishment.
This is controlled destruction of the body.”

IV. THE CROWN OF THORNS — HEAD TRAUMA AND MOCKERY

📖 Matthew 27:29

Matthew 27:29 NKJV
When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
“The soldiers then mock Him.
They place a crown of thorns on His head.
SHOW - Pass Around Crown of Thorns
The scalp is one of the most vascular areas of the human body—
so even small wounds bleed heavily.
Now don’t miss all that happens here.
Matthew 27:29 says they put it on his head, but then in the next verse it says this...
Matthew 27:30 NKJV
Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
So Jesus is wearing this crown of thorns, and with a stick they smash the crown of thorns further into his head
So now some of these thorns are smashed under his skin, some are splintered, this crown has sort of been fused into his head now
At this point lets stop and do a quick overview of what Jesus is feeling at this point...
SLIDE - List
Severe Anemia: Fading strength and dizziness from blood loss (weak, lightheaded, near collapse)
Severe Dehydration: Burning thirst and internal dryness (body desperate for fluid)
Multiple Lacerations: Raw, exposed pain across His back and shoulders (open wounds scraping with every movement)
Hypersensitivity: Heightened, unbearable sensitivity to touch (everything intensifies the pain)
Head Puncture Wounds: Sharp, constant piercing pain in His head (thorns pressing deeper with every movement)
Strained, labored breathing beginning (body already struggling for oxygen)
Muscle Failure: Shaking, unstable body (muscles failing, difficulty standing)
Hypovolemic Shock: Cold, clammy shock setting in (body beginning to shut down)Cold, clammy shock setting in

V. THE PROCESSION — COLLAPSE UNDER THE CROSS

📖 John 19:17

John 19:17 NKJV
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,
Now in most depictions of this you see Jesus’s carrying the full cross with him through the streets.
However this would not have been the case
The majority of scholars and historians agree that Jesus was forced to carry just the crossbeam—
SLIDE - Patibulum and Stipe Photos
the patibulum—approximately 100 pounds.
The individual would be nailed to the crossbeam and then that crossbeam would be lifted up and put in place onto the main post that was already installed called the stipe
SHOW - Have volunteers come lift the post to see what it would have felt like
Carrying this any other time probably would not been too difficult of a job.
Jesus grew up a carpenters son
He was probably carrying posts like these from an early age on a regular basis
But you can see how much all that he had gone through already was affecting him that he couldn’t even carry the 100lb post
Keep in mind that weight would have been sitting on the shoulders that were beaten with the flagrum, and the robe is still on him, so it is rubbing up against the skin as he moves and adjusts the post

VI. THE NAILING — STRUCTURAL AND NERVE TRAUMA

QUIZ TIME - WHICH 2 EVENT IS NEVER SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED IN ANY OF THE 4 GOSPEL’S CRUCIFIXION ACCOUNTS?
D - Jesus’s Beard being pulled out is only mentioned in one place in the Bible and it is in a prophecy in Isaiah 50:6 “I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.”
B - Interestingly enough, none of the gospels actually say that Jesus was nailed to the cross in their accounts of the crucifixion.
Now many other verses outside of the accounts clearly show he was nailed to the cross, like in John 20:25 after the resurrection....
John 20:25 NKJV
The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
Now there are 2 different theories as to how exactly Jesus was attached to the cross.
The traditional view is the 3 long nails were used, 2 were put through each wrist into the crossbeam, and 1 went through both of his feet, overlapped on top of one another, into the main post.
However a somewhat recent discovery has challenged a lot of this.
Recently some excavations unearthed what we have as the only archeological bodily record of crucifixion that we have. And this was the heal of a man crucified in Israel, by the Romans, with the nail still there.
The interesting part about it though, its only in one foot, and it isn’t at the top of the foot like we would think.
SLIDE - Show Picture of heel bone nail and small nails
You see the nail was actually put through the heel bone
Now this isn’t necessarily a new concept
This was much more commonly believed throughout history until Christian art decided it looked a lot better for the feet to be in the front, so it started to change to just one nail in the top of the feet
But if this was how Jesus was also crucified, then he would he had 4 nails used, and each heel bone would have been nailed to the side of the main post
Now archeologists have also found what they believe to be nails used for the hands, and they are a lot different too
These nails, which for multiple reasons are highly likely actual crucifixion nails, and some even believe were the actual nails used for Jesus, would have been much smaller and were simply used to hold the hands in place while ropes were used to hold the person to the crossbeam.
They would have put the nail in and then hammered the end over so the person could use their hands to untie the ropes
Some believe this is more likely because they think the nails in the wrist would not be enough to lift the body, and there is some scriptural evidence.
Scripture does continually reference the wounds being in his hands and feet and never says wrist
The word hands here can be a reference to wrist, but I find it interesting that the term hands is continued to be used, but we know that a nail in the hands could not support the body
This seems like a logical conclusion
But regardless of the location, we do know that his hands/wrist and feet are driven through with nails into the cross
“At this point…
every movement causes:
nerve pain
tearing of tissue
skeletal strain”
This was effecting nerves, more blood loss, immense localized pain now.

VII. THE CROSS — THE MECHANISM OF DEATH

📖 John 19:18

John 19:18 NKJV
where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.
Now let’s talk about the actual purpose of crucifixion...
Crucifixion does not primarily kill by blood loss.
SLIDE - Show Picture of Jesus on the cross
It kills by asphyxiation.”
In this position:
The chest is expanded.
Air can be drawn in…
but it cannot be pushed out.”
“To exhale, the victim must:
Push up on nailed feet
Pull on nailed arms
Lift the body
Breathe out
Collapse again”
“This creates a cycle:
Pain → push → breathe Exhaustion → collapse → suffocation
Over… and over… and over…”
(Pause)
“Until the body can no longer rise.”
It becomes this game of choice, do you want pain, or do you want to breathe - and this is the game they play until their body will not longer allow them to choose pain.
So at this point, quick recap of what Jesus is feeling....
Suspension Under Full Body Weight (arms stretched, joints strained, weight pulling against wounds) Acute Nerve Pain from Nails (sharp, radiating pain through arms with every movement) Crushing Pressure in the Feet (body weight forcing down through nailed feet during every push) Asphyxiation: Struggling to Breathe (unable to fully exhale, forced to push up for each breath) Extreme Exhaustion: Respiratory Failure Setting In (muscles failing, breathing becoming weaker and less effective) Worsening Hypovolemic Shock (falling blood pressure, reduced circulation, organs under strain) Severe Dehydration Intensifying (burning thirst, thickened blood, body shutting down internally) Cardiac and Pulmonary Distress (fluid buildup around heart and lungs, circulatory collapse approaching)

VIII. SYSTEM FAILURE — FINAL PHYSIOLOGY

📖 John 19:34

John 19:34 NKJV
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
As this continues:
Fluid builds around the heart
Fluid fills the lungs
Blood thickens from dehydration
“When the soldier pierces His side—
John records:
‘Immediately blood and water came out.’
This aligns with:
Pericardial fluid
Pleural fluid”
The body naturally has fluid around the heart and lungs—but in extreme trauma like this, that fluid builds up.
So when His side was pierced, the ‘blood and water’ reflects both blood and that surrounding fluid being released.
It was basically a way of showing that he was dead, because that fluid, which normally would be sort of mixed with blood, is now nearly completely separated
This is medical confirmation—
He is dead

IX. TRANSITION — THE CROSS IS COMPLETE

“That is what the cross does to a human body.”
“And Scripture is clear—
He chose it.”
He knew it was coming, he grew up around crucifixions being done regularly.
And he still did it
But one of the most incredible aspects of Jesus leaving the earth through the means of crucifixion is this fact
He came to earth to save mankind from their sins.
He lives a perfect life.
He never does anyone wrong.
He never lies. He never cheats. He never even talks bad about a single person.
And he is repayed with all of this we looked at today, that was the way mankind ultimately recieved the son of God into the world.
And he dies, and his spirit goes back to be with the father in heaven, in perfection.
The Bible says a thief was crucified beside Jesus, and Jesus tells him that they would both be in paradise.
Imagine Jesus is with this man in heaven
And a few days pass, and Jesus tells the man, I’M GOING TO GO BACK
The man would probably laugh at him
LIKE AFTER ALL THAT JESUS WENT THROUGH FOR MANKIND, YOU WOULD THINK HE WOULD SAY, NO I GAVE THEM CHANCE, THEY DON’T GET VICTORY OVER DEATH AND SALAVTION AND ALL OF THAT
and I know what you may be thinking, well Jesus had to because that would mean that death conquered God if he didn’t return, so he was going to no matter what, and yeah thats is probably true, but what did he do as soon as he returned?
He went right back to the people, he appears to over 500 different people
I just think it is interesting, regardless of the circumstance, that for 3 days, Jesus was back in perfection, back in glory, and after all that, he decides to come back to the people who did all this to him, and I think that should give us another very sobering thought when we look at the resurrection this easter
