V1
“Them” Is the Jews
Paul desires that they would be saved
Why aren’t they saved?
*Context* (9:30-33)
They don’t have faith
V2
They have a dedicated desire and interest toward God
But not with TRUE knowledge
knowledge = epignosos: The way this word is used is limited to transcendent or moral matter (A real knowledge)
Paul will continue his case as to how we can really be saved and how the Jews had the wrong idea.
V3
They not only did not know God’s righteousness
But they established their own righteousness
(Building a fence around the Law)
Ultimately not subjecting themselves to God’s Righteousness
What is God’s righteousness???
V4
The answer is Jesus
He is the end of the law, the fulfillment of the law
Matthew 5:17 ““Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.”
Everyone who believes this has the righteousness of God
But Paul continues to build his case and compare/contrast between the word of law and the word of faith
V5
Moses is saying that someone who practices righteousness based off of the law is now held to that standard
Which as we know every person failed because we cannot live to that standard
But there is another way to righteousness
V6-8
In order to understand these 3 verses we need to go to the passage Paul is referencing
Deuteronomy 30:12–14 ““It is not in heaven, (Talking about the Law) that you should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’ “Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’ “But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.”
See the contrast Paul is making?
The same God who gave the law also gave us atonement through Christ
Don’t say
Who will go into heaven and get the law so we can hear it and observe it
Who will go into heaven and bring Christ down to us so we may have salvation
It is not in heaven
We cannot bring Christ down to us
Nor is it beyond the sea or in the abyss that we have to go grab it ourselves
Again both the Law and Christ
That is to raise Jesus from the dead ourselves
What does it say?
The word is near us.
In our hearts and mouths
In this case; The word of Faith
This is not something we can work for
Jesus came down to us
Jesus died and rose from the dead for our salvation
That was something HE did, not us
We don’t have to go anywhere to get Him, He came to us
Verse 9 tells us what this word of faith is
V9
That’s what it takes for salvation
Not a Law that we continue to fail to obey
But a confession that Jesus is the Lord of our lives
And to believe (pistevo = To consider something to be true and therefore worthy of ones trust)
In our hearts that God raised Him from the dead so that we can rise with Him without the condemnation of sin and death that was paid for on the cross
Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
We are saved by faith in that grace God has given us
What does Paul mean by believing in our hearts?
V10
With the heart one believes
Which is just another way of saying the inner man
Your being is the thing that believes and drives you toward things
Resulting in righteousness
And with the mouth we confess
The outward sign of our inward belief, resulting in salvation
V11
Paul is referencing Isaiah
Isaiah 28:16 “Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.”
When we are believing in Jesus and His sacrifice
We are believing in something solid, something immovable, something firm and grounded
Jesus the cornerstone (Explain cornerstone)
V12-13
Again Jesus is not just Lord of the Jews or just the Gentiles
Salvation is not just for the Jews or just for the Gentiles
Jesus is Lord over all
He died for all
The gift of life is for ALL
Salvation is for all
All who call on Jesus, the name of the Lord
Now that we know the Gospel, what is the next step?
V14-15
But Paul is saying this as a plea for people who know the good news to share it with others
How can someone call out to someone they don’t believe?
How can someone believe if they have not heard
What do they need?
Someone to teach them, to share with them
But someone needs to be sent out in order to do that
We need to equip and send people our to share the good news
We need to not only hear the Gospel but live it out
V16
BUT not everyone who hears the good news will believe
It’s the sad nature of it, but we need to do it anyway
I’m saying that to myself as well
I have failed continually to do that because of the fear of failure and a fear of man.
I need to do better at sharing the good news
V17
We all have faith because we heard the Gospel preached to us in one form or another
People need to hear the good news
Will most reject it?
Yes
But will some come to faith because of it?
We don’t always know for sure, but it’s worth a shot
This is also a call for us to grow in our faith by hearing the word of God
We need the reminder of the Gospel
V18
They meaning the world
Yes they have
Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
Everyone has what is called general revelation (Creation, morality, etc)
V19
Isreal didn’t know did they?
Yes
They are actually held to a higher standard because they were given the Law
Moses in Deuteronomy talks about Isreal being made jealous by that which is not a nation, and lacks understanding
(The world)
Just like when Jesus went to the Gentiles after being rejected by the Jews
V20-21
God found us gentiles and gave us the good news
Those who did not seek Him or ask for Him
And with Isreal, despite their disobedience continually reaches out to them so that they would come to saving faith
Summary
That’s the thing we all have in common is that we all need the Gospel
We all need to repent and turn to Jesus who came, lived as a man, died a death we should have died, and rose again
and if we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth, that He is Lord, and that He saved us
We will rise from death to life as He did
He is risen
