“The resurrection is God’s public declaration that the payment for sin has been accepted.” — R.C. Sproul
At the end of service today we will be having the Lord’s Supper, which was a sacrament Jesus put into effect during Holy Week.
What exactly though is the Lord’s Supper? What meal were they getting together for?
Matthew 26:17-19 says:
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’ ” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
They were together having a Passover meal, so to truly fully understand the depths of what we do during the Lord’s Supper and to understand Easter let us go back to Exodus 12 this morning
The Passover (Exodus 12:1-14)
The Passover (Exodus 12:1-14)
A Perfect Lamb
A Perfect Lamb
In order for the Jewish people to be spared during the Passover the blood of a lamb without flaw had to cover their doorpost
Had to be under the blood
John in John 1:29 writes “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
This is meant to make the original readers think back to Isaiah 53 where it says in verse 7:
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
See the lambs blood during Passover was pointing to something/someone much greater and much more perfect...Jesus
His blood was shed so the blood of the Lamb could mark the doorpost of our very souls
Not to do so has grave consequences
At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was not dead.
See those not marked by blood were marked by death, and once again this points to something greater than the even itself
One realize from the so called greatest to the least of us none are exempt
But would could be so much greater than the death of so many young people?
That there is wrath coming for all who are not under the blood and those wille experience the eternally experience the second death
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
THis second death does not mean you are just consumed into nonexistence. Rather it is referring to the death of all good in your life and you expreincing any good from God rather it is eternal separation from God as you eternally experience his wrath. Other scriptures that let us know this are:
They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
When we look though at the Passover story Exodus 12:23 shows us destruction does not have to enter our house
For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
The Israelites were spared because of the blood, judgment passed them by
And the beauty of Jesus Christ the Lamb of God is seen in Ephesians 1:7:
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
See when the first death comes for you if you are covered in the blood the second death will not be awaiting you, but rather the eternal life of God
A Life Marked
A Life Marked
though as we read the Passover story the door post hold another significance for us.
THeir was an outward marking of who was God’s, of who was obedient to God, but also their life's were marked by obedience on the inside because they were also commanded in Exodus 12:8-11
They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover.
See being under the blood requires obedience
The blood is sufficient for all, but it is only applied to those who repent and believe.
You must confess Jesus as Lord and Savior, surrendering yourself to him
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Those that choose obedience people knew because they could see the evidence of the slaughtered lamb on the door post
When those around you what evidence of the blood do they see?
Is their a holiness about how you give?
Is there a holiness about how you serve?
Is there a holiness about how you resolve conflict?
Is there a holiness about how you behave at the ball park?
Is there a holiness about your work ethic?
Also note though there is some things they were commanded to do inside that others could not see.
there was details to it that may have seemed like small deals, but were of importance because they were commanded by God
How does your obedience look behind closed doors?
How often is your Bible opened?
How often do you pray?
How does the spiritual discipleship of your children look?
How is your hospitality?
How is your attitude towards your family?
What examples are you setting for your kids?
The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29)
The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29)
See the meal Jesus was having with the disciples was to remember this event, to remember the grace and judgment of God. To remember being set a part
The whole time though the meal throughout the years was looking forward to this moment, where the Lamb of God would be slaughtered and his blood would be enough for once and all
So when we take the Lord’s supper let us reflect on these principles
On God’s grace
On God’s Judgment
On being a set apart people in public and private
As we do the Lord’s supper let it also be done in anticipation of the day we will once again sit at the table with God in perfect fellowship
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,
of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
Take Care as You Participate (1 Corinthians 11:17-24)
Take Care as You Participate (1 Corinthians 11:17-24)
THis morning we have talked of the importance of our lives being marked on the outside and inside
Examine yourself and make sure you are striving for obedience in all areas
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
In a minute I am going to ask Patrick to play some music, and I will be here to pray with you, but I ask we all take time where we are to examine ourselves and pray to God
If their is division among us I pray the division is united in prayer and forgiveness is sought
And after we spend this time of examining and you fill their is something in your life that has you unworthy you do not participate
I am going to tell you one that many see as a little one, is if you have been able to be baptized and have not you should not participate because you are actively choosing disobedience
If you are not a Christian we ask you do not participate and I am not going to think bad of you for passing the plate, rather I will have deep respect for your boldness
Do not get me wrong We don’t want to exclude you—we want you to come to Christ first, so that this table can truly mean what it is meant to mean.
Communion
Communion
Again this table is for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ and have followed Him in believer’s baptism. If that is you, we invite you to join us. If not, we encourage you to observe and reflect on the meaning of this sacred act.
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-24
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Ask the men to pass the bread
Pray
“Take and Eat”
Read 1 Corinthians 11:25
In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Pass out juice
Pray
“take and Drink”
Read 1 Corinthians 11:26
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
