Introduction

Have you ever thought about who you would die for? I would die for my wife, I would die for my kids and grandkids, I would die for my parents. And for some of us this is natural to die for those that you love, for those that you have long lasting memories with. You might not even hesitate to jump in front of a speeding car to protect them. To risk going after them in a burning house.
John Robert Fox was a unsung hero during World War II. He was 29 years old serving in Sommocolonia, a mountain village in Italy. On Christmas day US forces had gained control of the town and the soldiers were handing out cheese and chocolates to the villagers. The next day the Germans mounted a counterattack. John Fox was an artillery spotter, his role required him to radio coordinates to inform the troops where to deliver their payloads.
The attack was severe and the US unit was forced to retreat. Hiding in his lookout position on the second floor of a house, he used the radio to contact his unit to request artillery fire be directed at the village. This would provide the troops time to retreat.
When the artillery officer stated, “Fox, that will be be on you,” he replied, “Fire it. There’s more of them than there are of us.” This sacrifice provided necessary cover for the retreating soldiers, which allowed the US unit to regroup and reclaim Sommocolonia a few days later.
Who would you sacrifice for? Do you care enough about others to sacrifice yourself?
Romans 5:6–9 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
A lot of people will put their life on the line for those that the love, very few will do it for someone that they don’t know, fewer still will do it for someone that has sinned against them. While we were still sinners when we had not hope of redemption Jesus died for us. Jesus died for people that right now may be reviling His name they might be cursing God they could be doing witchcraft, yet God sent His son to die an excruciating death so that we could be saved. We are going to look at more prophesies fulfilled by our Lord today. These prophesies prove that Jesus was real and that He Is The Messiah.
The Messiah Would Have His Hands And Feet Pierced.
Psalm 22:16 ESV
16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—
This was written by David a thousand years before Christ. You might think wasn’t David talking about himself? In David’s day people were executed by stoning not by piercing. Not by crucifixion because that form of punishment hadn’t even been developed yet. This indicates that David was talking about something that was before his time.
John 20:25 ESV
25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
Thomas doubted it, he didn’t want to believe that Christ had returned and he wasn’t there when the other disciples say Him. Sometimes Thomas gets a bit of a bad rap, we have to understand that he saw Jesus die and this had to be a traumatic experience for him. If you had someone ripped from you and someone runs up and says “he or she isn’t dead think about what your response would be?” Thomas wasn’t the only one that had trouble believing.
Luke 24:37–40 ESV
37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
He came back, he was in the flesh and the scars remained.
They Would Cast Lots For His Clothing
Psalm 22:18 ESV
18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
Jesus fulfilled this prophesy in
John 19:23–24 ESV
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
These were Roman soldiers they didn’t know about the prophesy probably didn’t care about the prophesy and here they are doing exactly what the prophesy foretold.
The Messiah Would Be Mocked And Ridiculed
Psalm 22:7–8 ESV
7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Let’s look at this in the New Testament
Matthew 27:39–43 ESV
39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
In todays vernacular we would be shaking our heads. People would probably be calling him crazy. We would be thinking that poor guy someone should have gotten Him some help. The fact is that this was a fulfillment of prophesy from 1000 years before this time.
The Messiah Would Be Crucified With Criminals
Isaiah 53:12 ESV
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Numbered with the transgressors means that the Messiah would be treated as if he was a criminal and would be grouped together with other law breakers. Yet he bore the sin of many and makes intercession for the transgressors. In case you didn’t know in case you are unsure those transgressors are us.
Mark 15:27–29 ESV
27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
Intercession for the transgressors… While Jesus was on the cross and suffering. One of the robbers said that he know that he was a criminal but that Jesus didn’t deserve this. He asked that Christ remember him in Heaven and Jesus told him that this day he would be with him in paradise. Even on the cross in his pain and suffering Jesus was interceding for transgressors.
This makes me think about a commercial for a company called sight savers. In the commercial the husband is sitting in a chair and he turns on his phone. His wife is looking while he is doing it and see’s him in a picture with a woman. She snatches the phone from him and says “Who is she Barry?” The husband replies “it’s you!” then they show the phone and it’s a picture of her with her husband.
She couldn’t see correctly so she thought is was another woman. The people, the pharisee’s could not see correctly so he was right in front of them and they didn’t recognize him.
None Of The Messiah’s Bones Will Be Broken
Psalm 34:20 ESV
20 He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
I am reading out of the ESV other versions such as the New Living Translation says “ For the Lord protects his bones.” To get a better understanding of this we have to go back to Exodus and the instructions the people were given by Moses.
Exodus 12:46 ESV
46 It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones.
The week that Jesus was killed was the week of passover.
John 19:14 ESV
14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
Jesus was meant to die during the time of passover because he was the new passover lamb, no longer did you need to put the blood of a spotless lamb on the doorpost of your house. Jesus was the replacement for that lamb that though it was spotless it could never pay the permanent price for us.
Like the song says Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe.
Crucifixion was a very brutal death, is was meant to be a slow death of suffocation, victims would use their hands and legs to hold themselves up so that they could breath and delay their death. If it was going on too long the soldiers would break their legs so that they could not push up and get their breath.
John 19:32–36 ESV
32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”
Just as the passover lambs bones were not broken the Lamb Of God’s bones also were not broken.
He Will Be Buried With The Rich
Isaiah 53:9 ESV
9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
So usually a criminal would not be buried in a rich mans tomb. In that day they were buried in a shallow grave, a garbage heap of in a potters field. The criminals who died with Jesus most likely were placed in Gehenna which served as a garbage dump and fire was kept going to incinerate the bodies and the trash that was kept there.
Matthew 27:57–60 ESV
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
We know that Pontius Pilate didn’t care about prophesy, indeed he probably cared about whatever would keep him in power more than anything else. Yet, he allows Joseph to take the body and give Jesus a burial reserved for rich men.
The Messiah Would Die Before The Destruction Of The Temple
Daniel 9:26 ESV
26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.
Here Daniel is prophesying that Messiah would be cut off or killed before the destruction of the temple. The second temple was destroyed by the romans in 70 AD this is the proof that the Messiah has already come.
The Messiah Would Rise From The Dead
Psalm 16:10 ESV
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
This is David writing again, you might this is about him however we know that David did die and that his body did decay. So what is he talking about here? David is talking about someone higher than himself. The reference to your holy one is proof of this.
Acts 13:35–37 ESV
35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, “ ‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’ 36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.
Decomposition usually sets in a few days after death. I would imagine someone who went through the amount of trauma that Jesus did might decay even faster from the air exposure from all the wounds. God raises Jesus from the dead before this has time to set in.
The Messiah Would Destroy Satan
This prophesy goes all the way back to the beginning of the Bible in Genesis which was written by Moses. 1400 years before Christ Moses writes this.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
This verse is showing that there will be constant conflict between Satan and his followers and Jesus and his followers. We see this with Pharoah trying to kill off the boys, Herod also trying to kill Jesus. The religious leaders trying to oppose Jesus, we see Satan trying to get his way trying to assume control.
It says that the victor will come from the offspring of a woman, usually we see this worded as the offspring of a man. This is saying that this will be someone who was born of a woman but not of a man.
You shall bruise his heel.. this is not usually a serious injury, sure it can be however he shall bruise your head. head injuries are almost always serious! And as the saying goes if you kill the head of a snake the body dies.
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
In revelation when John had his vision on the isle of Patmos. We see that Jesus has the keys, he has the power of life and death.
Revelation 1:12–18 ESV
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
I am thankful for all that Jesus went through for us AND the things that He is going to do. He is coming again and he is going to set this world right. There will be not more war there will be peace and we will live in glorified bodies.
