(NLT) — 1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
(NIV) — 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
There are key parts to this verse that will cause us to have a better sounding worship...
To have a better sounding worship we need to understand...
1. Therefore.
1. Therefore.
Therefore indicates a key transition in the letter. What follows appears in light of the preceding content of 1:18-11:36
To give you the bullets of what proceeded this verse...
God’s wrath is every present and explained.
God’s judgment is explained
(NIV) — 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
The law can’t save you
Paul explains how God is faithful and no one is righteous
Paul begins to explain how we become Righteous through faith.
Paul gives examples of Righteousness through faith by talking about how Abraham was Justified by faith
is all about how because we are made righteous by faith we have peaces with God through Jesus.
(NIV) — 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
speaks of the redemptive quality of the cross
Grace calls us out of our sin.
(NIV) — 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?
& 7 We now work for righteousness
We have victory over sin
(NIV) — 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
God has freely given us life through the spirit
God is for us and working for our good
God chose Christ to be the atoning sacrifice
God’s plan of salvation for Israel
We have been brought into the family of God
THEN WE REACH AND HE SAYS THEREFORE MEANING, IN RESPONSE TO EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID… Offer your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God!
Is there someone in the room who understands “Therefore” Is someone able to say I know who my God is and THEREFORE I can worship
KEY- People who struggle with real worship are not often in the word.
I don’t like this song…
KEY POINT- The word is the revelation of who God is and God’s plan for salvation. Every time God reveals himself it would bring people to worship.
KEY- The worship of this generation can be so shallow at times… This is due to a lack of understanding of who God is.
THOUGHT- We know there is going to be a lot of worship going on in heaven, some people have a hard time understanding why this is… I believe our understanding of who God is will be so much greater when we are in heaven...
POINT- You will never understand my worship until you know my God.
2. God’s Mercy
2. God’s Mercy
Notice it says in view of… Because
