The Great Exchange

I want us to remember a few things. Before today. People had to continually offer sacrifices for their sins.
Hebrews 10:4–7 (NLT)
4For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer.
6You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin.
7Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God— as is written about me in the Scriptures.’ ”
Hebrews 10:10 (NLT)
10For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

The Trial & The Crown (John 19:1-5)

"Imagine the scene: Jesus is standing before a massive crowd. He’s already been beaten. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and shoved it onto His head. They put a purple robe on Him to mock Him, shouting, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
Pilate brings Him out, bleeding and exhausted, and says:
'Behold the man!' (John 19:5)"

The Sacrifice (John 19:16-18, 28-30)

"They forced Him to carry His own cross to a place called 'The Skull.' In the middle of two criminals, they nailed Him to the wood. This is the moment where the 'Exchange' begins. Jesus knows that every prophecy is being fulfilled. He says, 'I am thirsty,' and after receiving a drink of sour wine, He speaks the three most powerful words in history:
'It is finished.' (John 19:30)
With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. The debt was paid. The altar was set."

The Burial (John 19:38-42)

"Two men who were secret followers of Jesus—Joseph and Nicodemus—risked everything to take His body down. They wrapped Him in linen with expensive spices and laid Him in a brand-new tomb in a nearby garden. They rolled a stone over the entrance. To the world, it looked like the story was over. It looked like defeat."

The Resurrection (John 20:1, 15-16)

(Since you mentioned the Resurrection, you’ll want to bridge quickly into the next chapter)
"But Sunday morning changed everything. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found the stone moved. She was crying, thinking someone stole the body, until a man stood behind her and asked why she was weeping. She thought he was the gardener until He said one word: 'Mary.'
'She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means "Teacher").' (John 20:16)
He wasn't a ghost. He wasn't a memory. He was alive, and because He rose, we have the power to live the 'Altar'd' life we’re talking about today."

How to "Connect the Dots" for YTH:

The Crown vs. Our Identity: Mention that He took the crown of thorns (the symbol of the curse/pain) so we could wear a crown of righteousness.
"It is Finished" vs. Our Effort: Tell them they don’t have to "work" for God’s love. Jesus shouted "Paid in Full!" (the Greek meaning of Tetelestai).
The Garden Tomb: Remind them that the story started in a Garden (Eden) with a mistake, and it was redeemed in a Garden with a Resurrection.
Pro-Tip: If you have a crown of thorns or a large nail as a prop, hold it up during the John 19:5 or 19:30 sections. It keeps their eyes locked on you while you speak the Word.

The Invitation: Choosing the Exchange

"Before we take Communion, we have to understand what it is. This isn't just a snack or a religious tradition; it’s a 'Member’s Only' meal. It is for those who have decided to follow Jesus and put their trust in Him.
If you haven’t made that choice yet, or if you’ve been 'playing church' but your heart isn't in it, this is your moment. You cannot step into the next season God has for you while holding onto the life He's asking you to lay down.
If you want to accept Jesus today—to trade your old life for His new life—I want you to raise your hand right now. I want to lead you in a prayer to make it official."

The Prayer of Acceptance

(Have them repeat this after you)
"Lord Jesus, I believe what Your Word says: that You came to save me. I know I’m not perfect. I realize I need the salvation that only You offer. I receive you.
I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You stepped down from Your throne as a human to carry the weight of my mistakes. You died so I could be made right and restored to the Father
Because of You, I choose life instead of death. I choose growth instead of defeat. I choose Your abundance instead of my lack. Thank You for saving me."

The Moment of Repentance: Clearing the Altar

"For everyone else who already follows Jesus: the Bible warns us not to take Communion in a way that doesn't honor God. If there is sin in your life that you’ve been hiding or holding onto—maybe it’s how you’ve been talking to your parents, something you’re watching, or bitterness you’re holding against a friend—now is the time to tear that stronghold down.
Repentance isn't just saying 'sorry'; it’s transformative move. It’s deciding to turn around and walk the other way.
Let's take 60 seconds of silence. Talk to God. If there’s something you need to lay down at the altar before you take this bread and cup, do it right now. Tell Him, 'Lord, I'm done with this. I'm leaving it here. Wash me clean.'"

Youth Communion: The Great Exchange

Matthew 26:26–29 (ESV)
26Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”
27And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you,
28for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

The Bread: Identity & Healing

The Peace of Christ: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts..." (Colossians 3:15)
Being Made Blameless: "May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless..." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
Physical & Mental Healing: "But he was pierced for our transgressions... and by his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24) By his wounds you are healed. (NLT)
Canceling Spiritual Attacks: "Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (Colossians 2:15)
Financial Abundance/Prosperity: "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:9)

The Cup: The Sevenfold Application

The Promise (Covenant & Forgiveness): "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:28)
The Rescue (Redemption): "In him we have redemption through his blood..." (Ephesians 1:7) and "They overcame [the devil] by the blood of the Lamb..." (Revelation 12:11)
The Clean Slate (Cleansing): "...the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." (1 John 1:7)
The Verdict (Justification): "Since we have now been justified by his blood..." (Romans 5:9)
The Purpose (Sanctification): "And so Jesus also suffered... to make the people holy through his own blood." (Hebrews 13:12)
The Life (Divine Life): "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life..." (John 6:54) and "For the life of a creature is in the blood..." (Leviticus 17:11)
The Voice & Access (Intercession): "...to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." (Hebrews 12:24) and "Therefore... we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus." (Hebrews 10:19)

Communion

The Bread: Total Healing

"Jesus, we’re here to honor You. You are the Lamb who gave everything for us. We set this bread apart to be Your body."
As we eat, we declare:
Everything we need was paid for at the Cross.
Every spiritual attack against our minds, our families, or our futures is permanently canceled.
We are healed. Right now, see Jesus healing your specific pain—whether it’s physical, a mental struggle like anxiety, or an emotional wound.
We lack nothing. Jesus took on our "poverty" so we could have His abundance.
Glory to the Lamb, Jesus.

The Cup: The Seal of the New Covenant

"Jesus, You told us to drink this to remember Your blood shed for us. We set this cup apart as a symbol of Your life."
As we drink, we declare:
This is the Seal of the New Covenant. It’s a legal guarantee of God’s blessings over our spirits, bodies, and minds.
There is Freedom: In this blood, we find rescue (redemption) and deliverance from anything holding us back.
There is Power: We claim a long, healthy, and productive life. We aren't just surviving; we are thriving because His power is in us.
Glory to the Lamb, Jesus.
Acts 2:24–28 (NLT)
24But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
25King David said this about him: ‘I see that the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
26No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.
27For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.
28You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’
Matthew 20:17–19 (NLT)
17As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately and told them what was going to happen to him.
18“Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die.
19Then they will hand him over to the Romans to be mocked, flogged with a whip, and crucified. But on the third day he will be raised from the dead.”
