The Third Day
The Third Day
The stone is rolled away
The women have been visited by the angels, and the angels told them that Jesus was risen
They went and told the disciples and Peter and John ran to the tomb to see for themselves
The disciples did not believe the women and now two of them are on their way back home in the little town of a Emmaus
These two Did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead and that he had died and now possibly the body was missing
V 13-14
These two were on their way home and on the way they were discussing the things that had happened. They were arguing they were debating what had gone wrong
We are going to join these two today and see from their Conversation with Jesus what we can learn from them
V 15
So Jesus joined them on this walk and started talking with them asking them questions
V 16
But their eyes were closed to the fact that it was Jesus they were talking to. they were not allowed to recognize him
So, as far as they were concerned, they were talking to a complete stranger who they thought was in Jerusalem from another place to celebrate the Passover
They are talking about Jesus discussing Jesus lamenting the fact that Jesus had died, but didn’t know they were talking to Jesus
The Discussion
The Discussion
V 17
So Jesus starts questioning them
What are you guys talking about?
And by their locks and their expressions, Jesus could tell that they were sad
So then they began to speak
V 18
What happened in Jerusalem? That weekend went viral everybody knew what had happened
And these men can’t believe that Jesus didn’t know what it happened in this town
V 19-20
So Jesus asked another question what things?
V 21
But we thought that Jesus was going to redeem Israel
And when they say redeem, they thought of a military conquest. Not redeemed spiritually
And besides that it’s the third day since it happened
I’m wondering if these men had remembered Jesus saying something about the third day and the third day has calm and it’s almost gone now and there’s no sign of Jesus
22-24
And then they are now recounting what the women had told them as we looked at last week
V 25
Now Jesus is going to rebuke them oh foolish ones slower, heart
Some have translated this to mean, moron you moron why are you so sad? Why are you not believing the scriptures?
Haven’t you read the scriptures? Haven’t you read the prophets? Haven’t you read the psalms in all through these things they speak of the Christ and having to suffer
V 26
V 27
Then Jesus started with Moses, started with Genesis and told them all the Scriptures that spoke about the suffering, servant
Told them all the scriptures about Jesus having to suffer first before he entered into his glory
here are a few examples
Betrayed by a friend (;).Ps. 41:9 55:12–14
Sold for 30 pieces of silver, thrown on the floor of a temple and later given to a potter ().Zech. 11:12–13
Accused by false witnesses ().Ps. 109:2
Silent before accusers ().Isa. 53:7
Mocked and Beaten (;).Isa. 50:6 53:5
Pierced in hands and feet ().Ps. 22:16
Crucified with thieves (,).Isa. 53:9 12
Ridiculed ().Ps. 22:7
Garments gambled away ().Ps. 22:18
Agonized by thirst ().Ps. 22:15
No bones broken (;;).Ex. 12:46 Num. 9:12 Ps. 34:20
Pierced (;).Ps. 22:16 Zech. 12:10
Buried with the rich ().Isa. 53
I’m sure that Jesus use these scriptures and many others to tell these two of the need of the Christ to suffer
I’m sure by the time they got to their destination that their knowledge of prophecy had expanded considerably
But Their eyes were not open to the fact that this was Jesus that they were talking to
V 28
So Jesus pretended here that he was gonna continue walking on
But these two asked Jesus to stay with them for the night
V 29-30
So it’s now supper time and they allow Jesus to be the host
So Jesus breaks the bread and prays for the meal
Then started handing out the bread to the two
There had been thoughts that they saw Jesus’s hands and recognized him
Others thought that it’s the manner which he talked that they recognized
But I believe that the Holy Spirit opened up their eyes
At that very time at that very moment, the blinders were taking off their eyes, and they were able to recognize their savior
The same way someone who Who gets saved The Holy Spirit regenerates them
Causes them to realize their need of a savior
Causes them to realize the punishment for their sin
Causes them to realize eternity
The Holy Spirit opens up their eyes and changes their will make them into a new creation changes them from hating God to loving God
Changes them from hating the light to loving the light
Remember in verse 16 that they were prevented from recognizing him
An in verse 31 their eyes are open and they recognize Jesus and then Jesus disappears instantly
The eyes of the unsaved are blinded.
They cannot see Jesus they cannot see their need of a savior. They cannot see their sin and the punishment for their sin.
And it’s only when the Holy Spirit removes that blindness that they can see when the Holy Spirit regenerates
V 32
Our hearts were burning within us. This is what happens with someone who has regenerated their hearts begin to open up to the word of God to the gospel of Christ.
And so we see
V 33-35
So the instant that Jesus disappeared, they realize that it was Jesus
Then they go running back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples the same thing that the women told them that that morning
That Jesus had risen from the dead and he was alive
Are We Blinded?
Are We Blinded?
in a way we are
We are blinded by the fact that we don’t know the Scriptures
We’re blinded by the fact that we don’t believe truly the Scriptures
Paul in Ephesians chapter 3, starting in verse 14 as a prayer for us
Turn to Ephesians chapter 3
This prayer is for our strength strengthening. This prayer is for our eyes to be open.
This prayer is for us to be well grounded
But this prayer also is a starting point for us to be learning. God’s word.
To be applying God’s word to our lives
We want to see Jesus and Jesus is there all the time, but we don’t spend time with him
God’s word tells us to pray without ceasing
That is to be in constant contact with the Lord
To be walking and talking with him to be on the road with Jesus
