Week 3: “The Danger of Temptation”
Text: James 1:12–18
12 Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Main Truth:Temptation is real, but victory comes when we understand its source and trust God’s goodness.
Temptation is real, but victory comes when we understand its source and trust God’s goodness.
Temptation is real, but victory comes when we understand its source and trust God’s goodness.
Introduction
We’ve seen:
Week 1: Trials test our faith
Week 2: Wisdom guides our faith
Now James shifts to something different—but closely related:
Temptation.
Trials come from the outside.Temptation comes
Temptation comes from the inside.
And if we misunderstand temptation, we will:
Blame God
Excuse sin
Fall into patterns that destroy us
So James gives us clarity.
I. The Prize of Endurance
I. The Prize of Endurance
(James 1:12)
“Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life…”
“Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life…”
A. Endurance Leads to Blessing
A. Endurance Leads to Blessing
“Blessed” means:
Spiritually fulfilled
Approved by God
God honors those who remain faithful under pressure.
B. Faithfulness Leads to Reward
B. Faithfulness Leads to Reward
“The crown of life” points to:
Eternal life
Eternal reward
Eternal joy in Christ
Illustration
An athlete pushes through pain because they see the prize ahead.
In the same way, believers endure because this life is not the finish line.
Application
Don’t quit in the trial.There is a
There is a prize on the other side of perseverance.
II. The Problem with Blame
II. The Problem with Blame
(James 1:13)
“No one undergoing a trial should say, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone.”
“No one undergoing a trial should say, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone.”
A. God Is Not the Source of Temptation
A. God Is Not the Source of Temptation
God is:
Holy
Pure
Without evil
He does not:
Lead you into sin
Desire your failure
B. We Tend to Shift Blame
B. We Tend to Shift Blame
From the beginning, humanity has blamed others:
Adam blamed Eve
Eve blamed the serpent
And today we say:
“It’s just how I’m wired”
“God understands”
“I couldn’t help it”
Illustration
Blaming God for sin is like blaming a doctor for disease while ignoring the cure he provides.
Application
Victory begins when we stop saying:“It’s not my fault.”
“It’s not my fault.”
And start saying:“Lord, help me deal with what’s in me.”
“Lord, help me deal with what’s in me.”
III. The Process of Temptation
III. The Process of Temptation
(James 1:14–15)
“But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire…”
“But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire…”
James gives a step-by-step breakdown.
A. Desire — The Internal Pull
A. Desire — The Internal Pull
“…by his own evil desire…”
Temptation begins inside, not outside.
The problem is not:
Your environment
Other people
The problem is the sin nature within us.
B. Deception — The Enticement
B. Deception — The Enticement
“…drawn away and enticed…”
This is a fishing term.
Sin:
Looks appealing
Promises satisfaction
Hides consequences
C. Disobedience — The Choice
C. Disobedience — The Choice
“Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin…”
There is a moment where temptation becomes decision.
D. Death — The Result
D. Death — The Result
“…and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.”
Sin always leads to:
Spiritual damage
Brokenness
Separation
Illustration
Sin is like bait on a hook.
It looks good…But behind it is a hook that brings destruction.
But behind it is a hook that brings destruction.
Application
If you don’t stop temptation early, it will grow into something destructive.
IV. The Provision of God
IV. The Provision of God
(James 1:16–18)
“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above…”
“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above…”
A. God Is Good
A. God Is Good
“Every good and perfect gift…”
God is not withholding good from you.
He is the giver of good.
B. God Is Unchanging
B. God Is Unchanging
“…with whom there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.”
God does not:
Change His character
Shift His standards
He is always good.
C. God Has Given Us New Life
C. God Has Given Us New Life
“By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth…”
Through salvation:
We are made new
We are given power to overcome sin
Illustration
A loving father doesn’t give his child poison—he gives what is good.
God is not tempting you—He is providing for you.
Application
When tempted, remember:
God is good
God is faithful
God has already given you what you need to stand
What Do I Need to Do
What Do I Need to Do
1. Recognize the Source
1. Recognize the Source
Temptation comes from within—not from God.
2. Reject the Lie
2. Reject the Lie
Sin always promises more than it delivers.
3. Resist Early
3. Resist Early
Don’t entertain temptation—fight it immediately.
4. Rest in God’s Goodness
4. Rest in God’s Goodness
God is not against you—He is for you.
Conclusion
Temptation is real.
But so is victory.
And the difference comes down to this:
Will you follow your desires?
Or will you trust your God?
James 1:12 (CSB)“Blessed is the one who endures trials…”
“Blessed is the one who endures trials…”
There is a prize for those who stand firm.
