Where He Calls

Life has mountaintop experiences.

This is when everything is going our way and sometimes, to use a sports analogy, we are in the “zone”. Praise Jesus for mountaintop experiences.

Having faith when life is good can be challenging.

As we look at our chapter in John this morning we are reminded that Jesus has just fed the 5,000 men and they wanted to make Him king.

Jesus is not a messiah of our own making.

We must remember this. We do not force Jesus to do anything.

Life has valley moments.

Yet, we all know, some more than others, life is not just mountaintop experiences. There are many moments of being in the valley of life. The wilderness moments.

Our wilderness moments challenge us and our faith.

This is true of the nation of Israel in the OT. The context of our miracle this morning is the Passover festival and all of the events of the first passover.

The disciples find themselves in trouble.

This is probably not of their own doing but the Sea of Galilee is cantankerous sometimes. These are experienced fishermen.

Jesus is the God of the Exodus.

As Moses parted the sea for the nation here Jesus walks on the sea to comfort his disciples. He uses the words “I Am” of Exodus 3. While studying this week I came across the phrase “I will be named by my deeds”.

Jesus is near us in the valleys.

We are never truly alone. Psalm 23 reminds us of this. As I did another graveside this week the passage was this great Psalm.

When we are with Jesus we are always closer to our “destination”.

John reminds us that as soon as Jesus got into the boat they “arrived”. Jesus knows where we are going and if we will allow him to lead we will get there.

Who is Jesus?

This passage is to inform us about who Jesus is, not who we are.
