Jesus and the Disciples Celebrate Passover
Jesus and the Disciples Celebrate Passover
Passover -
God tells Moses and Aaron
Each house should take a lamb without blemish
Kill it and eat it - all of it
Take its blood and place the lentil and doorposts
The purpose will be to save God’s chosen people - God will destroy all of the firstborn of Egypt without this blood
Make it a day or celebration and remembrance
Remember God’s salvation
This Celebration represented God’s work with Israel - His chosen people
This Celebration represented God’s work with Israel - His chosen people
He would save them from physical death
The unleavened bread and the dress for immediate travel symbolized the pilgrimage of God’s people
The blood over the door symbolized the blood that needed to be shed to appease God’s wrath for breaking His covenant
Hyssop - an herb used for cleansing and medicinal purposes - may have been used to represent God’s work in cleansing His people
Jesus then is going to show how this celebration is a foreshadowing of His work
Jesus then is going to show how this celebration is a foreshadowing of His work
He send his disciples out to prepare the feast
It is a miraculous gathering -
He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.”
concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
Upper Room
Reclining at the Table
He isn’t just celebrating a meal, He is celebrating the work of God and it’s results for the disciples
John 16
Upper Room - not a synagogue or place of worship
Reclining at the Table - relaxed setting for communion and fellowship
Jesus is beginning a renewed relationship with His disciples
Jesus is beginning a renewed relationship with His disciples
God incarnate is sitting down and eating dinner with his disciples
And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
Jesus desire was for a restored relationship with His chosen
Even though some would reject and are not chosen
This restored relationship is symbolized in the new sacrament we come to know as the Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper
Jesus invites His disciples to participate in this new covenant
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves.
Luke 22:
He shows them that there is a spiritual element to what is about to happen
For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
Even though Jesus is in Heaven at the right hand of God teh Father, he still participates in this supper, this fellowship and communion with them - and us
Jesus breaks the bread
Symbolizes the breaking of His body that will appease the Father and fulfill the covenant requirements for them
He then hands out the cup
Symbolizes the blood - His blood - that is shed for forgiveness of sins in this new covenant
Passover - represents God saving His people from death (Physical)
LS - represents God saving His people from death (Spiritual)
The Lord’s Supper represents for us God’s rescue of us - His grace and mercy extended to us for salvation
Remembrance and faith - means of grace
Warning: Examine your mind and your heart
Doxology
Doxology
God has rescue us! As he rescued the Israelites in Egypt from death in the Passover - so he has also rescued us in a greater way through The Passover Lamb Jesus Christ.
We are to eat of this supper through faith and in reliance on His work for our salvation
We are to remember God’s glorious work to rescue us
We are to believe that His work is sufficient for our salvation
For the one who has been rescued then come and commune with him again - remembering in faith what He has done for you.
For the one who has yet to experience this rescue and feels God calling you to this restored relationship, come and believe in Him.
God has rescued us! And, now he invites you to come and commune with Him and celebrate this restored relationship.
This is a celebration! We have been rescued.
