Luke 24:
The Resurrection - Our Hope & Assurance
We are here to celebrate the fact that the tomb was found empty.
We are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Friday was a somber occasion...
The death of Jesus Christ
The suffering
The shame
He had only known perfect unity with the Father - now He cries why have you forsaken me?
Was perfect - now he has the weight and curse of sin on his shoulders
Worse knowing that
It was our sin
But today is not a somber day - today is a celebration
Because not only was he delivered up to die for our trespasses - he was also raised for our justification.
And that is important - in fact, it is central
Because if Jesus was only delivered up to die for our sins, then He actually died in vain - and we have no gospel
If Jesus wasn’t raised, then His death would be no different from any other death
We would have no assurance that He is who He said He is.
We would have no assurance that the Bible is true - because the Bible foretells the resurrection
We would have no assurance that He is who He said He is.
We would have no assurance that our sins were paid for
So the resurrection of Christ is the centerpiece of God’s gospel.
Christianity stands or falls on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Christianity stands of falls on the
So as we reflect on the resurrection of Jesus today, let us reflect on what the resurrection means for us:
Because Jesus was resurrected:
We have confident assurance that Jesus is Lord
He has authority to lay his life down and to take it up again
We have confident assurance that His sacrifice as our substitute was accepted by God - and that our debt has been settled in full
We have confident assurance that His sacrifice as our substitute was accepted by God - and that our debt has been settled in full
We have confident assurance that the Word of God is sure and true
We have confident assurance that all that God has promised to do, He will do
We have assurance that since Jesus was raised from the dead, so will we also
By becoming a man and dying as our substitute, Jesus took upon himself the curse of sin and death that belonged to Adam and Adam’s descendants
By being raised from the dead, Jesus conquered death and secured life for all who would become His descendants by faith.
Because
He became the firstborn of a new
In his death, our forgiveness was purchased
In his resurrection, our justification is complete and our resurrection is secured.
We have confident assurance that the Word of God is sure and true
We have confident assurance that all that God has promised to do, He will do
Paul says that Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to do what He promised
Paul says that Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to do what He promised
And that his faith - his believing of God’s promises - was counted to him as righteousness.
Salvation for Abraham never depended in the slightest upon what he could do - but only on what God promised to do.
And when Abraham believed God’s promise, that faith in God’s promise was counted to him as righteousness.
But he says that Abraham wasn’t given special treatment - this wasn’t an isolated incident
He says it wasn’t written for his sake alone but for ours also.
So what applies to Abraham applies also to us - meaning that when we believe God’s promises, it is also counted to us as righteousness.
Throughout Scripture - from beginning to end - God was promising to send a Messiah
Every sacrifice of a lamb pointed to His death
His resurrection is promised throught the Psalms and in the prophets, and was promised by Jesus Himself.
Now God has done what He promised to do
Jesus came
Jesus died as our representative, delivered up to death in payment of our trespasses
Jesus was raised, fulfilling God’s promises, and accomplishing completely our justification
So here then is the promise
So salvation is in nothing but believing God’s promise, which
So we see that salvation does not come any other way than by faith alone ...
and that faith is not based on ourselves or anything we can do, but only on God’s promises
Easter - as far as Christian holidays go - one of the big 2
The resurrection of Jesus Christ shouts to the whole world that God’s promises are true
That God promised to send a Saviour, and He did
That God promised to that He would be pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities (Is 53:5), and He did
That God promised that He would not allow His beloved to Sheol or let His holy one see corruption (), but that He would raise Him from the dead - and He did
And He promised, that all who believe God’s promise, all who believe in the Saviour, will be raised with him to eternal life.
The main question: can we prove the resurrection?
The Resurrection assures us God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ.
Our churches are filled the most on these 2 days (Easter & Christmas)
This morning: what does the resurrection prove?
It is done
We must not allow the holiday
Those are the big things: Jesus birth, and Jesus’ death
not just another part of Christianity
Tick off those 2 boxes
But we know that Easter is not just an important celebration - it is the central message of Christianity.
That the Lord Jesus Christ was delivered up for our trespasses
that though perfect, he suffered and his body was broken as he faced the full wrath of God
That he died on the cross as our substitute - satisfying God’s justice
But praise God that the message doesn’t end there
because not only was he delivered up for our trespasses - he was also raised for our justification
that he did not stay in the tomb, but was raised to life
when Mary came to the tomb she found it empty
We rightly talk a lot about the death of Christ and the shedding of His blood for forgiveness - but Christianity really stands and falls on the resurrection
on this question:
It is finished.
Believe and be saved.
Let’s spend this day and every day after it praising God for the resurrection and eternal life given freely to the believing.
