Jesus was really dead!

Who was in charge of making sure Jesus died on the cross?
Roman Centurion - It was his job
He was an expert - if he got it wrong then he’d be next up on the cross!
Then Jesus’ body was put in a tomb -he’d been dead since Friday.
And in those days, it was customary to put spices on the dead body after so that it doesn’t smell so bad!
Jesus was really dead!
But what happens when they get to the tomb?

He is not here!!

Luke 24:2–6 NIV
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
Luke 24:2–5 NIV
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

He is not here!!

This is the greatest news that has ever been heard!
Everything Christian’s believe hangs on this simple statement!
He is not here!
The tomb is empty.
Mostly it’s a bad thing when something isn’t where you expect to find them!
Biscuit Box - Empty
Chocolates - Empty
Wallet - Empty
When your teddy bear isn’t in your bed!
When the car keys aren’t in the usual place and you’re running late!
Other examples...
No ice cream in the ice-cream van
No remote control for the TV
It’s BAD NEWS when something is not where you’d expect!
But NOT WITH JESUS!
HE IS NOT HERE!!!
Which means...

He has risen

Luke 24:6–8 NIV
He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

v6b-8

Jesus is RISEN,
The tomb is empty.

Jesus is RISEN - SIN dealt with!

Sin dealt with!

Every promise that God would rescue his people from death and sin
(What’s SIN)
Shove OFF God - I’m in Charge - Not you!
We deserve to be rejected by God, to face the consequences that we have chosen!
BUT NO!
HE IS NOT HERE!
HE HAS RISEN
It’s all fine and well saying that Jesus took our punishment on the cross for our sin before God.

Jesus is RISEN - All the proof we need!

But if that’s where the story ended,
we’d still have a problem.
We’d have no proof, we’d have no confidence, we’d have no assurance that we would have life with a loving God after we die.
But HE IS NOT HERE - Death is defeated, the price of sin has been paid for - every promise of God is shown to be trustworthy!
Everyone was convinced that JESUS had risen from the dead

Luke 24:9–12 NIV
When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
luke 24 9-
They still weren’t sure!
Which brings us onto our last point...

It might sound like nonsense, but that doesn’t mean it is!

People used to think the world was flat, and I bet the first people to try saying it was round were thought to be pretty crazy!
I mean, imagine I told you that Rats’ can surf. Would you think it sounded like nonsense?
CLIP
You see, it doesn’t really matter what you think, it matters what actually is true.
Luke 24:13–15 NIV
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
13-
Jesus went on to meet with many people, even a crowd of over 500 men once!
But just because so
I
HE HAS RISEN!
Those disciples would go to on to die themselves defending what they knew to be true!
Jesus has RISEN!
DOn’t go away today believing that Jesus is still in the tomb -

It might sound like nonsense, but that doesn’t mean it is!

it may sound like nonsense, but that doesn’t mean it
This is a day to celebrate! To praise our saviour, to lift up his glorious name.
To thank him for his power
To love him for his compassion on us
To celebrate his authority over even death
To know him as your brother and friend
To accept his underserved and merciful forgiveness
To cast your worries on to him
To seek him in his word
To serve him with every breath we have...
To KNOW HIM, and to ENJOY HIM FOREVER
It might sound like nonsense, but…if you’re looking for Jesus in a tomb...
He is not hear! HE HAS RISEN!

JESUS HAS RISEN! Hallelujah!
