Galatians 5: Grace vs Works
Galatians 5: Grace vs Works
Have you ever noticed how often those two words quietly follow you around…
“Not enough.”
Not smart enough.
Not disciplined enough.
Not spiritual enough.
Not consistent enough.
And if you’re honest… sometimes it even creeps into your relationship with God.
You pray… but not enough.
You read… but not enough.
You serve… but not enough.
And without realizing it, your faith slowly turns into a question:
“Have I done enough?”
Enough for God to move…
Enough for God to bless…
Enough for God to accept me…
And the tension is—no one may have taught you to say it that way…
…but deep down, it’s how a lot of us live.
Always measuring.
Always striving.
Always wondering where we stand.
Because the voice of the flesh is subtle…
It doesn’t always shout rebellion—
sometimes it whispers religion.
It says:
“If you just try harder… do better… be more… then maybe you’ll finally be enough.”
And now you’re exhausted… not from sin… but from striving.
That’s just it… many of us aren’t living in rebellion… we are living in EXHAUSTION
Am I working FOR God’s approval or living from it
And into that tension… Paul speaks:
Galatians 5:16–17
“16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
The tension…. Grace vs Works…. Spirit vs Flesh….
1.) The Flesh Tries To Earn What Grace Has Already Given
1.) The Flesh Tries To Earn What Grace Has Already Given
The work of the flesh isn’t just SIN…. It’s self reliance, the flesh wants control, the flesh feeds on pride.

Imagine someone gives you a mansion.
Not a small house… not something modest…
I’m talking about a beautiful, fully furnished, paid-in-full mansion.
You didn’t earn it., Didn’t qualify for it. Didn’t even see it coming.
They just hand you the keys and say:
“It’s yours. Live in it…. Everything is taken care….EVERYTHING”
At first, you’re overwhelmed.
You walk through the rooms like,
“I can’t believe this is mine…”
There’s gratitude. There’s joy. There’s rest.
But then… something starts to shift.
You begin to feel a little uncomfortable.
“This is too much…”. “I don’t deserve this…”. “I should probably do something…”
So you start small.
You think,
“At least I can keep it clean.”
So now you’re vacuuming every day. Wiping everything down.
Trying to prove you’re responsible enough to live there.
Then a little more time passes…
And now you’re thinking,
“I should probably cover the utilities.”
So you start paying bills…
on a house that was already provided.
Then it grows…
Now it’s the yard. Maintenance. Upkeep.
And slowly—without even realizing it—
The greatest gift you’ve ever been given…
turns into the heaviest burden you’ve ever carried.
Why?
Because somewhere along the way…
you stopped receiving it as a gift…
…and you started trying to earn your right to stay.
Galatians 3:3
“3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”
The goal of the flesh…. Isn’t just to “be like God”…. It’s to NOT NEED GOD.
But God doesn’t just save us…. HE SUSTAINS US through HIS grace
2.) Grace Isn’t Permission To Drift - It’s Power To Walk
2.) Grace Isn’t Permission To Drift - It’s Power To Walk
Titus 2:11–12
“11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,”
Grace is not passive… its not reactive… it’s EMPOWERING
It doesn’t LOWER THE STANDARD… it changes the source.
So many of us live exhausted because we are waking out our salvation without the GRACE that gave us our salvation…
John 15:5
“5 ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Remember the flesh and the spirit are in constant opposition…constant tension… the flesh wants you to live your life apart from the spirit… apart from HIM…
The fruit of this is frustration and exhaustion.
When we live from grace, obedience becomes OVERFLOW not OBLIGATION
Question:
What am I TRYING TO FIX, that only the SPIRIT can form?
3.) Walking In The Spirit Starts With Surrender Not Striving
3.) Walking In The Spirit Starts With Surrender Not Striving
***KEYS HERE***
Its counter cultural to everything the world teaches…everything the world understands, because its not born of the FLESH….Its in the SPIRIT
Romans 8:5–8
“5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.”
Its amazing the thing, so many people long for comes from a life of surrender, not striving… comes from worship not working..
You don’t overcome the flesh by fighting for freedom… you walk in freedom already given to you
John 8:36
“36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Practical Thoughts:
Start your day… in prayer, HOLY SPIRT lead me today
In weakness… shift your focus BEFORE your effort…
In failure… run to God not away from him
Concl/Salvation
It’s the tension… each of us feels… each of us experiences. Many never realize it…
The fight of the flesh….. its not just rebellion it’s exhaustion… its not just sin, its self reliance…
The first sin… “YOU COULD BE LIKE GOD”…. Also means you won’t need God…I’ve learned in my life that I am completely and totally reliant on the Spirit… and it starts IN SALVATION and works its way through everything in my life and every day of my life…
Salvation….
