1 An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
2 Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Aram,
4 Aram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon,
5 Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse,
6 and Jesse fathered King David…
We have come to King David
The most popular and successful King in the history of Israel
many have heard and know a lot of the stories about King David
David and Goliath
we took our grandson to see the movie David that came out this last winter
Like we did with Ruth, we are going to slowly go through David’s life
not too slow, we will be going over David for the rest year or longer when you consider all the Psalms he wrote
but the next 8 weeks or so
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.”
2 Samuel asked, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!” The Lord answered, “Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate to you.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord directed and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
5 “In peace,” he replied. “I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before him.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”
8 Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said.
9 Then Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.”
10 After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.”
11 Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.”
12 So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

God’s ways are mysterious to us at times. That includes why he chooses who he does. God chooses whom he chooses, then he equips them through his Holy Spirit to do his service.
The Seen Sin
The Seen Sin
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.”
The mourning of Samuel, a godly leader
Felt that the people of Israel were rejecting him when they wanted a king
God told him that the people were rejecting God, their true king
the failing of God’s people should mourn us
when I first read through this, I almost condemning Samuel
yeah, why are you still mourning Samuel? God rejected that king.
that king sinned, did not trust God and his ways, elevated himself
but I read it different when Samuel told Saul he was done
26 Samuel replied to Saul, “I will not return with you. Because you rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
this is a heartbroken prophet pronouncing that the king has now been rejected by God
the king that the people wanted in their rejection of God
Mourning time is over
it was not wrong to mourn, but it is time for mourning to be over
why… because God has seen the sin of Saul, but I have also chosen or seen his replacement
selected - chosen - seen are the different ways this word is translated
Hebrew word is seen or to see…
as we noted last week in our conclusion of Ruth; God has made a way for the coming of King David and more importantly, the coming of Christ
the Lord has seen the time, the family and the man who would become king
So the Lord is sending the prophet to Bethlehem, to the family of Jesse (the family of Ruth and Boaz) to anoint the next king
Another moral dilemma… Did God just tell Samuel to lie?
same as Rahab and the spies, she told the king the spies went one way, while she was hiding them
or the people who hid the Jews in the holocaust, were they guilty of lying
I do not believe so, even though we might tell our kids, that half truths is not telling the truth
protection of innocent life is at hand, God is not telling Samuel to sin
God cannot sin or entice others to sin for him to bring about his will
he can use the sinner and their sin to bring about his will
but telling Samuel to sin with the purpose of using that sin for his will would in itself be sinful
Samuel enters the town and the people are fearful as to why he is there
OT law
Dt 21:1-9
if a murder had taken place and nobody knew who or where the killer was from they would measure out the closest town, take a cow and kill it bringing judgment on the people of the town.
Saul is against the prophet
Samuel has cast judgment on Saul for sinning against the Lord, this would not have been a secret
this would spread faster than rain totals at the coop
nobody wants to come between the king and a prophet
they would have feared the wrath of the king for supporting the prophet
they also know that supporting the king could cause the prophet to cast judgment on them
The Lord sees all
The Lord has seen the sin of the people in desiring a king
The Lord has seen the sin of the king who did not trust in God
The Lord the kind to come and it is not the king of king that the people were looking for
The Seen Heart
The Seen Heart
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before him.”
The current King, Saul, was a tall, handsome, strong man
when he was introduced as King, it made it sound like he walked out and the people all came up to his shoulders
Now, here is Eliab the first born of Jesse and you get the same vibe
based on his looks, his stature everything that can be seen says wow! look at him, he must be a king!
Ironically, in Isaiah 52, it says that there is nothing about the looks of the messiah that would draw people to him
Humanity is still this way, drawn to things and people by looks
it has been from the garden… when Eve saw that the fruit “looked” good to eat…
we try to dress everything up as nice as we can because people are drawn to things based on their looks
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”
God bases things on what he sees as well, he just sees a little different than we do
God sees the heart
God has rejected Eliab because of his heart
what would God see when he looks at your heart
I have heard a lot of people define people who do not live for the Lord, are not Christians, “…but he has a good heart.”
Jeremiah tells me that my heart is deceitful above all else and not to trust it
Jesus tells us that our heart is full of greed and wickedness
but Christ came to give us a new heart, a heart of flesh, not a heart of stone
8 Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said.
9 Then Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.”
10 After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.”
None of these brothers looked the part or Samuel has come to understand that it doesn’t matter what I see
All of them are rejected by the Lord
All of them do not have the heart that the Lord is looking for
I wonder if each of the younger ones walked in a little taller as the older brothers got rejected
with the last of these thinking he is the one because all before him have been rejected
like when they announce the runner up before the winner
11 Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.”
Is there more… who is left
the youngest - young, small, insignificant
I think that is really what the meaning is here
he is so insignificant he isn’t even invited to the sacrifice
he is so insignificant that he has not been consecrated
consecrate - to set apart for service to the Lord
they would wash themselves their clothes and do other things to prepare themselves for worship or work for the Lord
they did not even bring young David in from tending the sheep
People can write us off, discard us for whatever reason or they can elevate for the same superficial reasons
but God knows your heart
is it full of greed and wickedness
or is it a new heart that he has placed inside you
you can fool people into thinking you have a good heart, but you cannot fool God
The Seen King
The Seen King
12 So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.”
It is funny to me that after God says do not look at his appearance that the Bible records him as have a good appearance
but in the context, it is not his appearance that set him apart
I think that it bring validity or evidence that God sees the heart
they all looked good, David wasn’t the ugly brother
God also could see before he walked in the door
when the one I chose gets here… there he is, anoint him!
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
Samuel anointed David
he literally poured oil over his head
not a little dot of it on the forehead, but he would pour what was in the horn onto David’s head
At the point, the Holy Spirit came on him
The Holy Spirit operates differently in the OT than it does in the NT
same Holy Spirit, interacts a little differently
In the OT, Holy Spirit did not dwell in every person who would `believe
it covered them, empowered them
Believers in the NT have the Holy Spirit interacting a little differently
8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:
9 About sin, because they do not believe in me;
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;
11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
David has been empowered by the holy spirit as the next king of Israel
The Holy Spirit now is
convicting the lost that they need to believe on Jesus for righteousness
sealing the believers unto salvation
empowering believers to take the message of Christ to the world
God has seen sin, he has seen the heart, and he has sent a king.
In Samuel he is anointing David
We know he has his eye on the future and King Jesus has come to cleanse our hearts and fill us with his spirit.
