Introduction

BIG IDEA Your faith isn't a static belief; it is a dynamic, daily movement that defines the "total sum" of who you are.
"Most of us spend our lives trying to manufacture a harvest of happiness in a field we don't own. But according to John 15, Joy isn't a crop you grow; it’s a sap that flows. You don't create it; you abide in it. It is the 'Double Cure' in emotional form—the legal certainty that you are loved and the spiritual power to finally be satisfied."

I. The Source: "These things I have spoken"

The Context of Abiding: This joy is not a "stand-alone" emotion. It is tethered to the "things spoken"—specifically the allegory of the Vine and the Branches (John 15:1–10).
Biblical Theology: Connect this to your notes on being . Just as the tree in Psalm 1 prospers because it is planted by the water, the believer has joy because they are "grafted" into the Vine.
The Reformed Insight: Joy is a passive reception before it is an active expression. We don't "work up" joy; we "abide" in the truth of what Christ has spoken.

II. The Nature: "That My Joy may be in you"

The Imputed Joy: Jesus does not just give us a joy; He gives us His joy.
Easter Connection: Consider the "joy set before Him" as He endured the cross. This is a "Resurrection Joy" that has already looked death in the face and won.
Depth vs. Circumstance: As noted in your study, this joy exists even when our "tears haven't reached their expiration date." It is the joy of a Savior who is perfectly satisfied in His Father’s love, now dwelling in us.

III. The Goal: "That your joy may be full"

The Expulsive Power: Following the theme in your notes, the "fullness" of Christ’s joy acts as an expulsive power. When the heart is full of His joy, there is no room for the "counsel of the wicked" or the hollow promises of the world (chaff).
Sanctification by Joy: We are "trained by grace" to desire Him more than sin. A "full" joy makes sin look small and unappetizing.

IV. The Walk: Keeping the Step

Application to the Walk: Connect this to Stoicheō—keeping in step with the Spirit. Walking with the Spirit means matching our stride to the One who is infinitely joyful.
The "Double Cure": We rejoice because we are both forgiven (Justification) and being made like the Vine (Sanctification).

Expository Hook: The "Gravity" of Joy

"In the world, happiness is a vapor that disappears in the wind. But in Christ, joy is a weight—a 'weight of glory'—that keeps the tree of Psalm 1 rooted even when the storms of life are at their most brutal."
the word circumstance in latin means “stand around” what is standing around you that determines your joy?
IN the biblical sense of the word it means the truth standing around you
Abiding is resting in the truth you are surrounding yourself with rest in the circumstance of the gospel surrounding you
